Signed: ________________________________________________________ Date: ___________________________________________________________ Abstract This thesis examines in what manner and on what basis communities of Judaism, Christianity and Islam, the Abrahamic faiths, can engage in conversation-dialogue relating to the concept of covenant to enable a greater awareness of their relationship with God and the relationships between each of their communities. To achieve this task, this study critically examines the primary texts of each faith in the context of human history, their origins, development and interaction through a series of five epochs which has been identified and constructed as an integral part of this study. Recommendations are made based on the conclusion that dialogue relating to that concept is not only possible but is vital to enable progress towards stability and harmony in human affairs, and a clearer understanding of humanity’s relationship with God. A number of other intimately related conclusions have been reached. Each of Judaism, Christianity and Islam have been called into existence by divine initiative as a consequence of major breaches of covenant by their successive predecessors, namely Yahwism, then Judaism, then Christianity. Those successive initiatives do not mean that any covenant has been abrogated. They are each extant and their operation is cyclical in accord with the conduct of their adherents. Each covenant involves a common obligation as well as responsibilities specific to each faith. The currency of each covenant, and a partnership between each faith, is shown by the convergence of prophecy related to continuing breaches of covenant which were generated within each of them. This has culminated in the establishment of the State of Israel – the central fact of the Common Era – and also in the relative status of the White Western Christian Bloc and the World Majority Peoples being reversed. This requires recognition of the partnership between the three Abrahamic faiths, and dialogue and cooperation on that basis. The scholars, who were later gathered under the label Scandinavian Legal Realism, did not represent a static theoretical position that remained unchanged from the 1910s to the 1950s; rather, their aims and ambitions varied with changing political and philosophical circumstances. The purpose of this article is to propose a distinction between two generations of Scandinavian Legal Realists. While the goal of the first generation (Vilhelm Lundstedt and Karl Olivecrona) fell little short of revolutionising the field of jurisprudence, transforming law into a vehicle for political and social reform, one of the main objectives of the second generation (Alf Ross and Ingemar Hedenius) was to take the edge off the radicalism of their predecessors. This was a basic line of thought for the founder of the school, Axel Hägerström (1868-1939), as well as for his followers Vilhelm Lundstedt (1882-1955), Karl Olivecrona (1897-1980), Alf Ross (1899-1979) and Ingemar Hedenius (1908-1982).

Alf Ross 1899–1979: A Biographical Sketch Knud Waaben* Alf Ross was born on 10 June 1899 in Copenhagen, the son of a civil servant in a government department. He graduated from high school in 1917. His first choice was to study at the Technical University, but he left it after one term and turned to law. He finished his legal studies in the summer of 1922 with remarkable results, obtaining the rare distinction then called laudabilis et qvidem egregie. Following graduation, he took up employment in a barrister’s office, but the practical occupations of a trainee did not satisfy him and he preferred to devote his time to further studies in law. Ross was well deserving of the scholarship he received from the Law Faculty for studies abroad. These awards would normally enable a young lawyer to spend about two years in foreign universities, usually in Germany, France and England. In 1923, Ross set out on a study tour which lasted two and a half years. In this same year he married Else-Merete Helweg-Larsen, a student at the Faculty of Humanities, who later became a high school teacher. She was a member of Parliament in 1960–73, representing a small liberal party which held considerable influence over the formation of political majorities after general elections. Ross’ journey took him to France, England and Austria. He may have gone abroad, as many young people did, without a detailed plan of study, but rather with an open mind to learn all he could from foreign law, court visits and perhaps from discussions with professors.

BIX1 Introduction The Scandinavian legal realists, critically-inclined theorists from Denmark, Norway, and Sweden, who wrote in the early and middle decades of the 20t century,2 are not as widely read as they once were in Britain, and they seemed never to have received much attention in the United States. This is unfortunate, as the work of those theorists, at their best, is as sharp in its criticisms and as sophisticated philosophically as anything written by the better known (at least better known in Britain and the United States) American legal realists, who were writing at roughly the same time. The focus of the present article, Alf Ross and Karl Olivecrona, were arguably the most accessible of the Scandinavian legal realists, with their clear prose, straight- forward style of argumentation, and the availability of a number of works in English.

The central inquiry seeks to answer the contemporaneous question of whether Article 142 can be invoked to make an order or pass a decree which is inconsistent or in express conflict with the substantive provisions of a statute. To aid this inquiry, cases where the apex court has granted a decree of divorce by mutual consent in exercise of Article 142(1) have been examined extensively. Thus the note also examines the efficacy and indispensible nature of this power in nebulous cases where the provisions of a statute are insufficient for solving contemporary problems or doing complete justice. INTRODUCTION An exemplary provision, Article 142(1) of the Constitution of India envisages that the Supreme Court in the exercise of its jurisdiction may pass such enforceable decree or order as is necessary for doing ‘complete justice’ in any cause or matter pending before it. While the jurisprudence surrounding other provisions of the Constitution has developed manifold, rendering them more concrete and stable interpretations, Article 142(1) is far from tracing this trend. The nature and scope of power contemplated in Article 142(1) has continued to be mooted imaginatively.

There were 59 societies represented. The Convention began with regis- tration early Saturday morning and with committee meetings. Commit- tees that met were the Credentials Committee, Mileage Committee, Balloting Committee and Hospital- ity Committee. Mass followed with State Chap- lain Father Gary Janak presiding. Pictured at left is Betty Vacek. Pictured at right is Donna Janda. The Mass featured Alice Wright Marriage as the Fifth Gospel playing the piano and Betty Vacek leading the Choir. After Mass, registration continued and was followed by lunch, dur- ing which a presentation was given by delegates Margaret Ryan and Bea Jarzombek, sisters of Sister Rebecca Janacek. .................................. page 3 A slideshow was shown and they spoke of Sister Rebecca’s work in Rotu, East Africa. Everyone found the presentation Convention, cont. interesting and informative. ................................... page 6 A silent auction was held all day Saturday through Sunday morning benefitting the K.J.Z.T. Memorial Scholarship Fund. The total raised for the fund was over $1,500. Then, the Convention was opened by State Director Sofie Perkins. The blessing of the gavel was done by State Chaplain Camp Pictures Father Gary Janak. VP/Insurance Services Pam Strickland gave the roll call.

SINAI A Prayer for Pilgrims Lord Jesus, You traveled with Your two disciples to Emmaus after the Resurrection and set their hearts on fire with Your grace. I beg You: travel also with me and gladden my heart with Your Presence. I know, Lord, that I am a pilgrim upon this earth, seeking my true citizenship in heaven. During my pilgrimage, surround me with Your holy angels to guide me and keep me safe from seen and unseen dangers. Grant that I may carry out my plans for this journey and fulfill my expectations according to Your will. Illumine my mind with the incomprehensible light of Your Transfiguration on Mt. Tabor. Help me to see the beauty of all things and to comprehend the wonder of Your truth in everything You have created. For You are the way, the truth and the life, and to You do I give thanks, praise and glory, together with Your Father who is without beginning and Your all Holy Spirit, now and forever and to the ages of ages. AMEN. Why make a Pilgrimage to the Holy Land? For the Christian, Jerusalem – the site of the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ - will always be the center of the world. In the course of 20 centuries, millions of Christians have made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, with their goal being Jerusalem as the most important place to journey to and pray at its holy sites – and with Bethlehem a close second.
