Phil Manzanera, ex Quiet Sun, chitarre, Andy McKay sax tenore, Brian Ferry voce, Brian Eno tastiere e sintetizzatori. Questo è il nucleo del gruppo che si distingue subito per la geniale soluzione "musiva", dove ogni cosa anche se distorta è esattamente dove deve stare; riff di chitarre incalzanti, contrappunto di fiati, voce magistrale che insegue le invenzioni sonore di Brian Eno e compagni. Zampe di elefante, corpini sagomati, stivali con zeppe, boa di piume di struzzo e trucco da vjados, Brian Eno, vero cuore cybernetico pulsante dei Roxy Music si destreggia attorniato da tastiere e manopole, fornendo un' "imprinting" unico e sovversivo; dopo soli due album, “Roxy Music” e “For Your Pleasure”, dalla splendida copertina dove compare una sconosciuta Amanda Lear con pantera, Brian Eno che già collaborava con artisti del calibro di Robert Fripp (King Grimson), John Cale e Nico (Velvet Underground), Kevin Ayers e Robert Wyatt (Soft Mashine"), incide il suo primo album da solo "Here come the warm jets", notevole. Seguono " Taking tiger mountain by strategy”, ove ospita Robert Wyatt ed "Another green word nel 1975. L'anno successivo incide "Discreet Music". Quindi è la volta del suo V° album "Before and after science", nel 19977. Rimane intatta la dimensione ludica con cui affronta e stravolge la musica rock, la percuote con sferzate di una invisibile frusta elettronica scoraicandola e rimodellandola come uno scultore fa con l'Argilla. La prima parte dell'album non sembra discostarsi molto dai suoni precedenti anche se tende a prevalere una interpretazione volutamente semplice, da canzone Pop dalle soluzioni melodiche, quasi scalcinate: "No one receive" è al limite del funky, segue "Back water" quasi una marcetta; in "Kurt's rejoinder" compaiono sonorità vocali e percussive africane trascinate da un basso elettrico; poi l'album inizia a cambiare volto. Da un sound nevrotico si apre alla piacevole melodia pop completa di coretti di "Here he comes" che scivola nella splendida "Julie with...". Segue il piccolo capolavoro "By this river". Poesia avvolta da ragnatele di piano e tastiere, unica struggente, ineluttabile, rispolverata da Nanni Moretti che l'ha usata nella colonna sonora per "La stanza del Figlio. La traccia numero 9 è dedicata ad Harold Budd altro mostro sacro della musica "Ambient". L'album si conclude con la miniatura introspettiva “Spider and I". Fra i compagni di questa avventura spiccano Phil Collins (Genesis), Phil Manzanera (Roxy Music/Quiet Sun), Fried Frith (Henry Cow), Joachim Roedelius e Moebius Brian Eno continua però a sfornare musica, sembra inesauribile la sua fonte sempre pronto ad esperienze Nuove e Stimolanti. Bellissimo "My life is a bush of ghost" con David Byrne (ex Talking Heads). Ha prodotto "Unforgettable Fire" degli U2, continua a collaborare con Laurie Anderson, John Cale e non so quanti altri; pervade qualsiasi cosa tocchi di uno spirito nuovo come un re Mida, sempre alla ricerca di soluzioni innovative che rendono subito riconoscibile il suo tocco anche nelle sue innumerevoli esperienze di produttore pronto a riconoscere immediatamente i talenti nascosti di tanti gruppi sconosciuti che da quel momento non rimangono più tali; e questo non è un caso. In the second half of the 1970s, Brian Eno, Larry Fast, Mickey Hart, Stomu Yamashta and many other musicians blurred the lines between rock and avantgarde. Brian Eno (34), ex-keyboardist for Roxy Music, changed the course of rock music at least three times. The experiment of fusing pop and electronics on Taking Tiger Mountain By Strategy (sep 1974 - nov 1974) changed the very notion of what a "pop song" is. Eno took cheap melodies (the kind that are used at the music-hall, on television commercials, by nursery rhymes) and added a strong rhythmic base and counterpoint of synthesizer. The result was similar to the novelty numbers and the "bubblegum" music of the early 1960s, but it had the charisma of sheer post-modernist genius. Eno had invented meta-pop music: avantgarde music that employs elements of pop music. He continued the experiment on Another Green World (aug 1975 - sep 1975), but then changed its perspective on Before And After Science (? 1977 - dec 1977). Here Eno's catchy ditties acquired a sinister quality.

    Afterword: Before and After Science1 The processes of design and construction for these houses were grounded as much in the subjectivity of art and creativity as they were in the objectivity of any ‘pure’ scientific rationality. All of the clients’ requests regarding technical and functional aspects were faithfully incorporated into the finished designs. But these requirements did not, in themselves, generate the design of any of the houses; they were simply added to the mix. Each house was based, primarily, on an architectural concept that originated from a variety of sources—overseas examples, a contemporary reworking of traditional designs or the geometry of a road. Although most of the clients were directly involved in many aspects of their design, all left the formulation of the concept entirely to their architects. This was where the binuclear plan, the one-box square plan, the building blocks, the courtyard plan and the crescent-shaped plan originated. So robust were these sketch concepts that the clients could adjust various aspects to improve functionality—internal circulation, materials and details—without destroying the integrity of the idea. While Fenner and Zwar believed that functional and environmental considerations were important, they were not the main reasons they rejected accepted architectural styles and adopted Boyd’s and Seidler’s visions of modernity. The principal reason was the aesthetic imperative: the visual appearance of modern architecture, art and design. What was important to these scientists was that their new houses incorporated forms, materials, details and equipment that represented particular physical attributes of the modern world. Whether or not these related to the functional requirements of a suburban house was often of secondary importance.

    Journal of the Irish Society for the Academic Study of Religions 7 59 © ISASR 2019 John BOYLE Before and after Science: Esoteric Traces in the Formation of the Freudian Psychoanalytic Subject ABSTRACT: This paper argues that traces of the Western esoteric traditions can be found within Freudian psychoanalysis and proposes that the significance of such traces for the development of a specifically psychoanalytic understanding of the human subject has thus far been largely neglected. A critical-realist hauntology is proposed to act as the transmissive milieu for the persistence of such traces. The paper then provides a brief introduction to Western esotericism as an academic discipline prior to turning its attention to the conceptual metaphor of 'trace' as a means of articulating relations between esotericism and psychoanalysis at the latter's inception. The paper goes on to adumbrate a complex conceptual matrix conjoining Freudian psychoanalysis to fin de siècle occultism, psychical research, telepathy and the Jewish Kabbalah. The paper concludes by drawing attention to the persistence of esoteric traces in contemporary psychoanalysis and reflects on the synergistic potential of psychoanalytic ideas for the academic study of Western esotericism.     Brian Eno: a Biographical Note Brian Eno has become an iconic figure within international contemporary culture. As an artist, musician, ideologue and systems-maker, he has not only written, performed, recorded and produced some of the most original music of the last thirty years, but has also established a philosophy of cultural production which links the enquiring spirit of conceptual art to the broadest applications of popular culture and sociology. Best known in the field of music, Eno’s discography as a musician, producer and artistic collaborator includes some of the most acclaimed recordings in the history of modern music. Artists as seminal yet varied as John Cale, David Byrne, Laurie Anderson, David Bowie, Bono, Peter Gabriel, Paul Simon and Coldplay have chosen to work with Eno, and he is one of the most sought after figures working across the spectrum of contemporary music, from guitar driven rock to film scores and electronica. And yet music is only one strand of Eno’s creative project. As a lecturer, visual artist, writer, political activist and futurologist, his opinions and ideas have been requested by institutions and think tanks on subjects as disparate as concepts of time, urban futures, perfume making and the history of art.     Rock Album Discography Last up-date: September 27th, 2021 Rock Album Discography “Music was my first love, and it will be my last” was the first line of the virteous song “Music” on the album “Rebel”, which was produced by Alan Parson, sung by John Miles, and released I n 1976. From my point of view, there is no other citation, which more properly expresses the emotional impact of music to human beings. People come and go, but music remains forever, since acoustic waves are not bound to matter like monuments, paintings, or sculptures. In contrast, music as sound in general is transmitted by matter vibrations and can be reproduced independent of space and time. In this way, music is able to connect humans from the earliest high cultures to people of our present societies all over the world. Music is indeed a universal language and likely not restricted to our planetary society. The importance of music to the human society is also underlined by the Voyager mission: Both Voyager spacecrafts, which were launched at August 20th and September 05th, 1977, are bound for the stars, now, after their visits to the outer planets of our solar system (mission status: https://voyager.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/status/). They carry a gold- plated copper phonograph record, which comprises 90 minutes of music selected from all cultures next to sounds, spoken messages, and images from our planet Earth. There is rather little hope that any extraterrestrial form of life will ever come along the Voyager spacecrafts. But if this is yet going to happen they are likely able to understand the sound of music from these records at least.

With Bach and Beethoven it is hard to go wrong. But my short list there would be Bach's B Minor Mass and St. Matthew's Passion, The Art of the Fugue, Well- Tempered Klavier, some of the organ music, the Brandenburgs, the Partitas, the Goldberg Variations, and the solo violin works. For Beethoven it would be the late piano sonatas, the late string quartets, and the symphonies. For Brahms I like best the chamber music, such as the sonatas for cello and piano, or for clarinet and piano, some of the piano music, and some of the songs, in addition to the German Requiem and the symphonies. Mozart I like the operas best, definitely. Other composers worth checking out: Palestrina Monteverdi Haydn (the string quartets, piano sonatas, the trios, The Creation, assorted symphonies) Chopin some pieces by Schubert Mahler's 9th Do not be duped into thinking that 20th century and contemporary musics are a wasteland (see my book *In Praise of Commercial Culture*, on this).
