IT’S ALL GEEK TO ME: TRANSLATING NAMES OF INSECTARIUM ARTHROPODS Prof. J. Phineas Michaelson, O.M.P. Why don’t they know the basics of Greek and Latin? Either they don’t pay attention in class, or in many cases schools just don’t teach these classic languages of science anymore. For those who are Latin and Greek-challenged, noted (fictional) Victorian entomologist and explorer, Prof. J. Phineas Michaelson, will present English translations of the scientific names that have been given to some of the popular common arthropods available for public exhibits. This paper will explore how species get their names, as well as a brief look at some of the naturalists that named them. INTRODUCTION Our education system just isn’t what it used to be. Classic languages such as Latin and Greek are no longer a part of standard curriculum. Unfortunately, this puts modern students of science at somewhat of a disadvantage compared to our predecessors when it comes to scientific names. In the insectarium world, Latin and Greek names are used for the arthropods that we display, but for most young entomologists, these words are just a challenge to pronounce and lack meaning. Working with arthropods, we all know that Entomology is the study of these animals. Sounding similar but totally different, Etymology is the study of the origin of words, and the history of word meaning. -

The effectiveness of the system was studied by tak- ing photos of 165 insect species including some subspecies from museum collections (105 Coleoptera, 11 Hemi ptera (Pentatomidae), 12 Hymenoptera, 10 Lepidoptera, 9 Mantodea, 4 Odonata, 13 Orthoptera, 1 Phasmatodea) and 16 living insect species (1 Lepidoptera, 3 Mantodea, 4 Orthoptera, 8 Phasmato- dea), from which four are exemplarily pictured herein. The system is based on a modifi ed standard consumer DSLR camera (Canon Rebel XSi), which was altered for two-channel colour infrared photography. The camera is especially sensitive in the spectral range of 700-800 nm, which is well- suited to visualize small scale spectral differences in the steep of increase in refl ectance in this range, as it could be seen in some species. Several of the investigated species show at least a partial infrared refl ectance. -

C’est le premier signalement de cette espèce à l'ouest du delta du Niger. La morphologie et le comportement des adultes sont décrits. Cette observation apporte un nouvel éclairage sur le rôle du "Dahomey gap" dans la biogéographie des faunes guinéo-congolaises. Summary . – Biogeographic affinities of the Insects of “Dahomey gap”: presence of a population of Goliathus goliatus Linnaeus, 1771, in the Benin (Coleoptera, Scarabaeidae, Cetoniinae) . Goliathus goliatus Linnaeus, 1771, are pointed out to the Benin. It is the first indication of this species west of delta of Niger. The morphology and the behavior of the adults are described. This observation brings a new lighting on the role of "Dahomey gap" in the biogeography of Guineo-Congolese faunas. 293 BIONOMICAL NOTES ON SOME BORNEAN MANTIDJE. By R. SHELFORD, M.A., C.M.Z.S., Curator of the Sarawak Museum. DURING a five years' residence in Sarawak, Borneo, I have kept in captivity, and under close observation, many species and specimens of Mantide, and have from time to time jotted down rough notes on their habits, their food, methods of feeding, life history, &c. The following account is a brief resume of these notes, and, though containing no very important or new facts, may perhaps be of some interest to those readers of 'The Zoologist' who have never had the good fortune to observe these curious insects alive for themselves. Species of the genus Hierodula and Tenodera 8uperstitiosa are met with more frequently than any others in Borneo, and, as they are strongly attracted by light and frequently fly into houses at night when the lamps are lit, I ,have had plenty of oppor tunities of observing their habits in captivity, and of checking my observations. A Mantis such as one of these, when first captured, displays considerable ferocity, grasping with its raptorial legs the fingers of its captor with great force, at the same time trying to bite, but after a few days many become comparatively tame, and some of my captives would not only take food from my fingers, but would devour it whilst resting.on my hand. It is most interesting to watch a Mantis, e. g. Hierodula dyaka (a bright green species), attack a large butterfly,'such as an Ornithoptera or Amathusiine when introduced into its cage; the movements of the butterfly are watched closely for some time, the Mantis turning its head from side to side in what appears to be a very intelligent manner; the fore part of the body (the prothorax) is raised, the rap torial front legs are drawn up close against the side of the body, and their yellow inner surfaces turned outwards; the abdomen • 294 THE ZOOLOGIST. -
Importance of Primary Forests for the Conservation of Saproxylic Insects
Chapter 17 Importance of Primary Forests for the Conservation of Saproxylic Insects Thibault Lachat and Joerg Müller Abstract Primary forests represent the ultimate intact habitat for saproxylic insects. However, their extent has been considerably reduced over the past centuries, and those remaining are very heterogeneously distributed. Primary forests are still locally abundant in tropical and boreal zones but are rare in temperate zones. Consequently, many saproxylic insects that were adapted to typical characteristics of primary forests, such as large amounts of dead wood or overmature and senescent trees, might have become extinct regionally due to habitat loss. The remaining primary forests therefore function as refuges for those saproxylic species that cannot survive in managed forests because of their high ecological requirements. Here we identify six characteristics of primary forests important for saproxylic insects that differen- tiate these forests greatly from managed forests, namely, absence of habitat frag- mentation, continuity, natural disturbance regimes, dead-wood amount and quality, tree species composition and habitat trees. These six characteristics highlight the importance of primary forests for the conservation of saproxylic insects in all three main climatic domains (tropical, boreal and temperate). As primary forests are rare in northern temperate zones and are being dramatically lost in boreal and tropical zones, we propose that they should be strictly conserved independently of their climatic zone. Furthermore, we recommend that studies in primary forests intensify to provide reference data for integrating primary forest characteristics into managed forests to improve the conservation of saproxylic species. ON A COLLECTION OF ORTHOPTEROID INSECTS FROM JAVA MADE BY OWEN BRYANT AND WILLIAM PALMER IN 1909 By A. N. Caudell Of the Bureau of Entomology, United States Department of Agriculture The expedition to Java in 1909 by Bryant and Palmer was made under the auspices of the United States National Museum, though financed largely by Doctor Bryant. By agreement the material col- lected was delivered to the Museum for determination by.specialists associated with that institution, a set of duplicates to be returned to Doctor Bryant. The following report is on that portion of the insects collected belonging to the orders Dermaptera and Orthoptera. The following alphabetical index of the valid specific names of the pterygot insects of Old World is an initiative one, recorded in the Info-system of the Cesa so far. The scientific names are given below with the authors, usually with the date of publications, and their families. The validity of the names are usually confirmed here from the taxonomical and nomenclatural standpoints. The synonyms are omitted here. The present list comprises totally 2977 species of the recorded insects of the Old World within Info-system of the Cesa (Lepidoptera excluded). Total number of the species recorded so far is 5968 (together with Turkey) (except Lepidoptera). Currently they belong to 1506 genera of 356 family group taxa recorded.
