A total of three species are known to exist locally; Ameles spallanzania (Rossi, 1792), Mantis religiosa (Linnaeus, 1758) and Riv- etina baetica Rambur, 1839. The presence of Ameles decolor (Charpentier, 1825) cannot be confirmed by any recently collected mate- rial, but the species is not excluded from the Maltese entomofauna. Two doubtful records are also discussed. All species present in the archipelago are typically found in Southern Europe and the Mediterranean basin. Key words: mantids, Malta, Mediterranean. Nansei Islands Biological Diversity Evaluation Project Report 1 Chapter 1
Introduction WWF Japan’s involvement with the Nansei Islands can be traced back to a request in 1982 by Prince Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh. The “World Conservation Strategy”, which was drafted at the time through a collaborative effort by the WWF’s network, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), posed the notion that the problems affecting environments were problems that had global implications. Furthermore, the findings presented offered information on precious environments extant throughout the globe and where they were distributed, thereby providing an impetus for people to think about issues relevant to humankind’s harmonious existence with the rest of nature. One of the precious natural environments for Japan given in the “World Conservation Strategy” was the Nansei Islands. The Duke of Edinburgh, who was the President of the WWF at the time (now President Emeritus), naturally sought to promote acts of conservation by those who could see them through most effectively, i.e. pertinent conservation parties in the area, a mandate which naturally fell on the shoulders of WWF Japan with regard to nature conservation activities concerning the Nansei Islands. This marked the beginning of the Nansei Islands initiative of WWF Japan, and ever since, WWF Japan has not only consistently performed globally-relevant environmental studies of particular areas within the Nansei Islands during the 1980’s and 1990’s, but has put pressure on the national and local governments to use the findings of those studies in public policy. Unfortunately, like many other places throughout the world, the deterioration of the natural environments in the Nansei Islands has yet to stop. -

BEETLES Coleoptera Beetles make up the largest group of insects with at least 350,000 known species across the world and make up around a quarter of all know species on the planet! They include some beetles well-known to us such as the ladybird and in the UK, we have at least 4000 different species. • Beetles have a distinct lifecycle and can spend several years as larvae before emerging as an adult. • Beetles have an elytra which is a pair of modified wings that have hardened to form a wing case, thus beetles fly with one pair of wings. • Beetles play a number of ecological roles. They can be detritivores, recycling nutrients such as plant materials, corpses and dung. They can act as pollinators and predators to pest species. They have been revered such as the sacred scarab beetle by ancient Egyptians and loathed as pests such as the death watch beetle. They are a fascinating and diverse group of animals and well worth exploring in more detail. Backhuys Publishers, Leiden. xlviii + ix 756 pp. INTRODUCTION Bombyliids, or bee flies as they are commonly called, comprise a diverse and speciose assemblage of brachycerous flies. With more than 4,500 species known worldwide, they are one of the largest families of Diptera, surpassed in numbers of species only by the Tipulidae (14,000), Tachinidae (9,200), Syrphidae (5,800), Asilidae (5,600), Ceratopogonidae (5,300), and Dolichopodidae (5,100). They occur in a variety of habitats and ecosystems (from ca. 10 km from the Arctic Ocean in Canada through all latitudes as far south as Tierra del Fuego; and at altitudes from over 3500 m in the Himalayas to 200 m below sea level at the shores of the Dead Sea). They are found on all continents except Antarctica and also many oceanic islands. The family has a remarkable range in size (from some Exoprosopa with wingspans of more than 60 mm to the tiny Apolysis that can be as small as 1.5 mm in length) and variety of shapes (e.g., Systropus mimicking ammophiline wasps; Bombomyia mimic- king bumblebees). The adults of the larger species are powerful and agile fliers, rivaling the syrphid flies in their ability to hover and move in all directions while in flight. With many species possessing colorful patterns of stripes and spots on the wings and bodies, bee flies are often some of the most striking in appearance of all the Diptera. Individuals can often be seen either resting in the open on trails or on rocks or twigs sunning themselves, or feeding on a variety of flowering plants. -

Das fremdartige und formenreiche Erscheinungsbild der 2.500 beschriebenen Arten hat auch die Entomologinnen und Entomologen seit jeher fasziniert. Die Erforschung der Gottesanbeterinnen entwickelte sich in den vergangenen Jahrhunderten jedoch eher gemächlich. Als morphologische und molekulare Analysen in den 1990er Jahren erstmals einen phylogenetisch-systematischen Ansatz verfolgten, begann eine neue Ära der Mantodea-Forschung. E-mail: [email protected] Abstract The new micro-dolichopodid genus Haromyia gen. nov. and the type species H. iviei sp. nov. are described from the island of Dominica in the Lesser Antilles. Males and females of Haromyia are distinguished by the large setae on a bulging clypeus, minute size, and wing veins that are nearly straight and evenly diverging from wing base. Haromyia does not fit readily into any contemporary dolichopodid subfamily, although it superficially resembles the Enliniinae and Achalcinae. Haromyia should be regarded as incertae sedis until the dolichopodid subfamilies can be refined, particularly to better incorporate the tropical diversity of this large family. Key words: Neotropical, micro-dolichopodid, Enlinia, Harmstonia, West Indies, Achalcinae, clypeal setae Introduction Robinson’s monograph of the Dolichopodidae of Dominica (Robinson 1975), a product of the multi-year Bredin- Archbold-Smithsonian Biological Survey, documented 113 species in 30 genera from the island. Three new genera, Cryptopygiella Robinson, Dominicomyia Robinson, Micromedetera Robinson, and 69 new species were described in that work (Robinson 1975).
