ISBN Summary Salt lake studies are of great interest for limnology and harbor a source of numerous discoveries in this science. This is mostly caused by hydrological closedness of watersheds which build up and fix effects of climate changes and anthropogenic impacts. Another important but underestimated motive to study salt lakes is their potential to serve good models for marine systems, some crucial properties of seas, at least; the lakes feature small response time, at that. Salt lakes are found in all continents but so far have received poor study and are still underestimated. The book is a collection of abstract of the 8th International Conference on Salt Lakes, that maintains traditions of the previous conferences. Inherent to the conference is a meeting of INTAS project participants working on slat lake subjects. The conference is held in the Republic of Khakasia, Shira district – land of exceptional ecological cleanliness that holds innumerous salt and fresh-water lakes miraculously neighboring each other. Getting together in the land of Khakasian lakes will promote establishment of long-term international contacts for joint work on these lakes. Editor-in-chief: A.G. In the southern Baltic Sea, M. mutica lives in inlets (Bodden) of the Danish and Polish coast. INTRODUCTION The entomological collections stored in the patrimony of “Grigore Antipa” National Museum of Natural History of Bucharest have a historical and documentary scientific value, both at national and international level. In “Grigore Antipa” Museum, the Chrysomelidae material is included in the old Collection of Palaearctic Coleopterans (partial data published) and in the Collection of Chrysomelidae, recently formed. The new collection, which we refer in this paper, gathers: – material preserved in the old coleopteran collection from the Palaearctic area, including specimens from Richard Canisius, Deszö Kenderessy, Fridrich Deubel, Arnold Lucien Montandon and Emil Várady collections, acquired between 1883–1923.

Severtsov Institute of Ecology and Evolution, Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow, Russia Received October 6, 2007 Abstract—The species rank of Macroplea japana (Jacoby, 1885) is confirmed based on examination of the holo- type. The main characters distinguishing this species from M. mutica are as following: the 4th antennomere is as long as the 3rd segment and somewhat longer than the 2nd segment; the pronotum is smooth, shining, with 3 black longitudinal stripes on the bottoms of 3 longitudinal impressions; the femora and tibiae black apically; the 1st meta- tarsomere is as long as the 2nd and the 3rd tarsomeres combined and is almost twice as long as the 2nd tarsomere; the claws bear no triangular projection near the bases; the aedeagus forms a shorter apical projection. Macroplea japana is found in Russia (Primorskii Territory) for the first time. DOI: 10.1134/S0013873811090065 Macroplea japana was described from a single vals between elytral striae convex, smooth. Legs specimen collected in Japan (Honshu Island: Bukenji, rufous, with apices of femora, tibiae, and 1st–4th a suburb of Yokohama, a pond) (Jacoby, 1885). Later, tarsal segments black. 1st segment of hind tarsus the species was found in Honshu, Kyushu, and Oki- as long as two succeeding segments combined, nawa islands and in eastern China (Jiangsu Province) nearly twice as long as 2nd segment.

The pattern of postglacial re-colonization of Europe and the present population structure are known for various plant and animal species. The reed beetle Macroplea mutica (Fabricius, 1792) has characteristics that should influence both aspects in a pecu- liar way and therefore complement the currently known scenarios: It is fully aquatic but cannot swim or fly. Samples from 25 Euro- pean populations of M. mutica and five specimens from China were investigated using amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP, 251 loci). Assessment of error rates associated with this method showed that the data set contains a strong population genetic signal. As hypothesized pronounced population differentiation and signs of inbreeding were found. Italian populations are clearly differentiated from northern populations (and from each other), which underlines the role of the Alps as a major barrier. Specimens from Lake Balaton (Hungary) show some affiliation with the populations in the Baltic Sea, which are all relatively similar. Popula- tions from the eastern part of Northern Germany are similar to the Baltic populations, while those from the western part are allied to the British populations.

Welcome to Konstanz, to the 105 th annual meeting of the German Zoological Society (Deutsche ZoologischeGesellschaft, DZG) – it is a great pleasure and an honor to have you here as our guests! We are delighted to have presentations of the best and most recent research in Zoology from Germany. The emphasis this year is on evolutionary biology and neurobiology, reflecting the research foci the host laboratories from the University of Konstanz, but, as every year, all Fachgruppen of our society are represented – and this promisesto be a lively, diverse and interesting conference. You will recognize the standard schedule of our yearly DZG meetings: invited talks by the Fachgruppen, oral presentations organized by the Fachgruppen, keynote speakers for all to be inspired by, and plenty of time and space to meet and discuss in front of posters. This year we were able to attract a particularly large number of keynote speakers from all over the world. Furthermore, we have added something new to the DZG meeting: timely symposia about genomics, olfaction, and about Daphnia as a model in ecology and evolution. In addition, a symposium entirely organized by the PhD-Students of our International Max Planck Research School “Organismal Biology” complements the program. We hope that you will have a chance to take advantage of the touristic offerings of beautiful Konstanz and the Bodensee. The lake is clean and in most places it is easily accessed for a swim, so don’t forget to bring your swim suits.A record turnout of almost 600 participants who have registered for this year’s DZG meeting is a testament to the attractiveness of Konstanz for both scientific and touristic reasons.

Received: 28 October 2011; in revised form: 16 November 2011 / Accepted: 25 November 2011 / Published: 9 December 2011 Abstract: The present paper reviews the biology of reed beetles (Donaciinae), presents experimental data on the role of specific symbiotic bacteria, and describes a molecular method for the detection of those bacteria. Reed beetles are herbivores living on wetland plants, each species being mono- or oligo-phagous. They lay their eggs on the host plant and the larvae live underwater in the sediment attached to its roots. The larvae pupate there in a water-tight cocoon, which they build using a secretion that is produced by symbiotic bacteria. The bacteria are located in four blind sacs at the foregut of the larvae; in (female) adults they colonize two out of the six Malpighian tubules. Tetracycline treatment of larvae reduced their pupation rate, although the bacteria could not be fully eliminated. When the small amount of bacterial mass attached to eggs was experimentally removed before hatching, symbiont free larvae resulted, showing the external transmission of the bacteria to the offspring.
