I read 3 bombers are lost with 19th of July 1944... but only 1 crew is found in MACR from 457 BG (42-97601). So the "history" must be in error. One possibility could have been loss of two a/c in circumstances that did not trigger a MACR, namely an accident. However, I checked our accident fles and while two aircraf were lost to accidents on 23 July 1944, none are listed for 19th July. Sorry to be of so litle help. Cheers! craig harris Posted by W. PGS.: 44,800 BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE Bruce Bolinger was the son of a Belgian refugee who fled her homeland for England in 1914 following the outbreak of World War I, and later emigrated from Europe to the United States. Bruce himself toured Belgium and The Netherlands for the first time in 1975 where he met his great-uncle, Arthur Schrynemakers, a Dutch national who helped rescue Allied airmen, Jews, and members of the Dutch resistance movement during World War II. After his retirement from the position of Nevada County Clerk and Recorder in 1998 Bruce began to explore Schrynemakers’ activities in greater depth, uncovering a wealth of information regarding WWII escape and evasion in the process. Mr. Bolinger subsequently spent over twenty years researching the aid given to downed Allied airmen by resistance organizations and individuals during World War II in The Netherlands, Belgium, and France. He visited dozens of significant historical sites, and has spoken with countless Allied airmen, local European resistance fighters, their families, historians, and other World War II-Era scholars. His extensive WWII escape and evasion research has resulted in a comprehensive website on the subject, along with a number of published articles and speaking engagements aimed at educating the public on this important historical topic. Mr. Bolinger donated his collection of archival material to the Air Force Academy’s McDermott Library in January, 2020. This collection complements the Special Operations collection donated mainly by Colonel Brad Bradbury and the Escape and Evasion records donated by Ralph Patton.

    Charles W. Roberson – 16 weeks in France April 24 to August 15, 1944 Charles and his crew bailed out on April 24, around noon, while returning from a mission to Oberpfaffenhofen, Germany. All crew members survived, but four members were immediately arrested. HARVEY, RULE, BROWN, RADER, McMANUS and ROBERSON managed to avoid immediate capture. Plane crash Plancy – 4/24 Maquis St Mards – 4/26 General map of the crash location (90 miles East of Paris) and the maquis camp Charles landed near the small city of Arcis sur Aube (a few miles east of the crash), and met the local chief of resistance, Mr BERNARD, the next day. On April 26, Charles was moved to the village of “Saint Mards en Othe”, where he met Mr & Mrs DERIVERY. Marcel DERIVERY could speak English fluently, and that’s probably why many other airmen (both RAF and USAAF) were sent to Saint Mards en Othe. Marcel would first make sure the airmen were genuine allies, as it was known that the German were sending spies to infiltrate evasion networks. Marcel was helped by Mr COUILLARD and Mr LEBRUN, who were very active in the resistance and helped many downed airmen. Within six weeks, 14 airmen who had been shot down in the region of Troyes were sent to the DERIVERY’s. Charles was the first one. Obviously, Marcel could not lodge them all, and it was decided that the men would join the Maquis nearby, a few miles south of the village. Mr. Allen, where in Europe, and in what unit, were you serving prior to your capture? RA: I was based in England, with the 8th Air Force. I was a pilot in the 457th Bomb Group. And I had been shot down and lived with the French underground. And I was captured by a, the Gestapo through the intervention of a Belgian girl who betrayed me to them. And the incentive for her to betray me was for 20,000 francs, which at that time the exchange was worth $400. PS: Do you remember the approximate date of your capture? RA: Yes, approximately the 1st of August, 1944. PS: '44. Prior to this time, had you witnessed any examples of German cruelty or atrocities against soldiers or civilians? RA: I don't know how to classify them, if they are atrocities as such. But, you could feel and see the strain of, in this case, the French people, living in what was an occup-, their country being occupied by an enemy, and not such a sympathetic enemy. And I don't guess enemies are never sympathetic, but... PS: Yeah, well, I suppose that living as you were in the underground, you really weren't exposed to German Gestapo, until the time of your capture.

He was shot down over France and rescued by the French underground. They gave him a French identity and hid him in Jouy-le-Chatelle and in Paris. After a Belgian girl betrayed him, Roy was captured by the Gestapo on August 1, 1944. Because he carried French papers and had no military identification, he was charged as a spy and not a prisoner of war. He was imprisoned in Fresnes Penitentiary in Paris for one week and then sent to Buchenwald. Roy mentions the instructions United States pilots were given before each mission, and his experiences with the French underground. Roy describes his arrival and processing at Buchenwald, as well as the starvation diet and primitive living conditions. He saw the crematorium at Buchenwald and witnessed the killing of prisoners by injection and by drowning in vats of icewater. He reports that V-2 rockets were manufactured at Buchenwald at that time. A report of his interrogation at the prison in Fresnes established his status as military personnel. Roy was transferred to Stalag Luft 3 at Sagen and treated as a prisoner of war. He contrasts his treatment in Stalag 3 with conditions in Buchenwald. About a month before the end of the war, he was marched to Moosburg. He was liberated by Patton’s 14th Armored division. NSO success stories...information...and more Fourth Annual MIA/POW Recognition Day and Orientation Luncheon Sponsored by Veterans Administration, Boston Healthcare System was held by Nov. 30, 2007 at the Boston Jamaica Plain Campus. Forty-four former prisoners of war, accompanied by their spouses, family members and caregivers were served lunch by members of the VA administration and their staff. The luncheon was followed by orientation on the proper use and care of prescription medication by members of the pharmacy staff.
