[generalNote]: Hanes gweinyddol / Braslun bywgraffyddol | Administrative history | Biographical sketch Nodyn | Note Gwilym Davies (1879-1955) was born at Cwmfelin, Bedlinog, Glamorgan. He began preaching in 1895, and trained at the Midland Baptist College, Nottingham, and at Rawdon College. There he won the Pegg Scholarship, enabling him to enter Jesus College, Oxford, where he edited The Baptist Outlook. In 1906, he was ordained minister at Broad Haven, Pembrokeshire, and married Annie Margaretta Davies. She died in December the same year and their baby son died four months later. He later served as minister in Carmarthen, 1908-1915, Abergavenny, 1915-1919, and Llandrindod, 1919-1922, after which he retired from the ministry. He co-founded the Welsh School of Social Services in 1911, to apply Christian principles to social questions. He also championed the rights of boys from reformatory schools, who were not always justly treated by their employers. In 1922, he co-founded with Lord David Davies of Llandinam the Welsh council of the League of Nations, with the aim of securing co-operation between the world's nations, and served as its director 1922-1945. Under his direction, the council's Welsh Education Committee's draft model constitution for an international education organisation greatly influenced the Llyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru = The National Library of Wales Tudalen | Page 3 GB 0210 GWVIES Rev. Gwilym Davies Papers, creation of UNESCO. Davies is probably remembered best for initiating in 1922 the peace message of the youth of Wales to the youth of the world, now broadcast annually on 18 May. He was also the first person to broadcast in Welsh, on St David's Day, 1923. In January 1942, he married Mary Elizabeth Ellis of Dolgellau, only the second ever woman to be appointed a school inspector in Wales. He had suffered ill-health since a teenager, and died in January 1955; his ashes were scattered at Lavernock Point, Penarth.     David Davies 75: Father of the Temple of Peace JUNE 12, 2019 CRAIG OWEN COMMENT By Craig Owen, Head of Wales for Peace at WCIA On June 16th 2019 – appropriately enough, Father’s Day – it will be 75 years to the day since Lord David Davies of Llandinam (1880-1944), father and founder of Wales’ Temple of Peace & Health, passed away on June 16th 1944. A leading thinker in Welsh internationalism who left his mark on the nation in a myriad ways, he died just months before the end of the World War he campaigned to avert, and the creation of the United Nations he had advocated since WW1. David Davies’ Legacy A legendary figure to many generations who have worked, met, campaigned and volunteered through the Temple of Peace since its opening in 1938, his name is also immortalised in the David Davies Memorial Institute, the world’s first Department of International Politics he founded at Aberystwyth University in 1919 – this year celebrating their centenary – and in the David Davies Llandinam Research Fellowship at LSE. The (King Edward VII) Welsh National Memorial Association (WNMA), which he established in 1910 to eradicate Tuberculosis and lead Public Health thinking, became one of the founding bodies of the Welsh National Health Service (NHS) in 1946-48 – the transitional authority for which operated from the Temple of Peace & Health. David Davies was also instrumental in founding the Welsh National Agricultural Society (now Royal Welsh) in 1904, establishing National Insurance with David Lloyd George in 1911, and founding the New Commonwealth Society in 1932.

    I. Beginnings Three of us, Mollie Reynolds, Hannah Harbury and myself were having coffee together, and we saw the wife of one of the members of staff going past. In that pre-feministic age, the custom was to refer to ‘the wife of this-or-that professor’. Anyway, not one of us could remember who she was, and we agreed that that was a laughable situation. You have to remember that only a fifth of the number of students that are here today were at the College at that time; the majority of the staff lived in the town and the professors either walked or bicycled to the College. There were very few houses on Waunfawr, and nearly every College department was in the old building. Mollie suggested that we start a Club. And so we set about composing a letter and having copies made. There was no such thing as photocopying then. We were surprised by the reaction, everyone was enthusiastic, and I found myself treasurer of this new Club, much to my husband’s unease! This is how Mair Williams described the formation of the University of Wales Women’s Club (or the College Women’s Club as it was first called) in Yr Angor in 1995 on the occasion of its 40th anniversary. She later recalled that this had happened at a College event around 1954, about the time that Goronwy Rees had arrived at Aberystwyth. Mollie Reynolds suggestion that we start a Club stemmed from the fact that she had been a member of a Women’s Club at the London School of Economics where her husband, Philip A.

    100 Rediscovering Ellen Evans (1891–1953), Principal of Glamorgan Training College, Barry Sian Rhiannon Williams During the last thirty years, thanks to the work of historians, publishers, broadcasters, and others, the contribution of women in the history of Wales is, slowly, being acknowledged. Although Welsh historiography needs to move beyond the stage of ‘uncovering’ the lives of ‘forgotten’ women to a more nuanced understanding of gender relationships, the fact remains that many women who were well-known during their lives for their contribution to Welsh national life are absent from the historical record. Thus, ‘rediscovering’ these women is still a valid activity.1 A case in point is Ellen Evans (1891–1953), a prominent figure in educational and cultural circles in Wales in the inter-war and immediate post-war years. Her standing is such that she gained an entry in the Welsh Dictionary of National Biography and her name is included in the National Library of Wales online database.2 Her contribution to the debate surrounding the teaching of Welsh in elementary and secondary schools has been recognised by historians of the Welsh language and culture.3 However, the breadth of her interests and involvement in public life has not yet been explored and little is known of her private persona. She is, therefore, a strong contender for ‘rediscovery’. The aim of this article is to begin that process. The timing is apt since it is the sixtieth anniversary of her death at the time of writing (2013). Her credentials for inclusion in the annals of the Honourable Society of Cymmrodorion are strong.

    TENNIS WALES LTD Annual Report 2018 Chief Executive Report Tennis Wales continued to lead the growth & development of tennis in Wales throughout 2018. In a year which saw a change in leadership, the organisation has continued to work in partnership with the LTA and Sport Wales to benefit our tennis community. With Peter Drew leaving as Chief Executive Officer (CEO), I was appointed to start officially on 1st April 2019 and lead the organisation into creating a new vision & strategy with our partners. All tennis venues were supported throughout the 2018 year to meet the new & improved safeguarding standards, ensuring we are at the forefront of keeping players safe when participating in tennis. 83 tennis venues that register with Tennis Wales, now have appointed & trained Welfare Officers in place and they will be supported by a new Tennis Wales Safeguarding Officer being appointed in 2019. Tennis participation has fluctuated throughout the year. Club membership remains static, and we need to look at how we help tennis venues, coaches & volunteers to modernise our tennis offer, take tennis online for people to find and book what’s on offer and work more proactively through social media and marketing of our sport. We know that people want to play tennis, but they struggle to find a place to play and someone to play with locally. We also see a need to attract investment into the 90+ park sites with tennis courts in Wales. Many of the courts are in a state of disrepair, but provide a low cost opportunity for thousands of people to play.

In the entrance vestibule of Wales’ Temple of Peace, visitors pass two intriguing linen hangings proclaiming the achievements of ‘Welsh Efforts for World Peace’ in the years that followed WW1 – each of which sound almost too big to be possible; each of which beg the question “what’s the story?” And perhaps most of all… How, What and Why? How could a nation as small as Wales seemingly mobilise what sounds like every household and institution, in the pursuit of something as big and broad and seemingly unattainable as world peace? Why this Wales-wide profusion of activity… and where did it go? Why don’t we know about it today… How could something so big fade from history, from our collective memory? Has it become subsumed within national identity? What would it take today, in a world riven with conflicting and divided views from Brexit to Trump to Refugees and Equalities, to unite people once more around a shared mission of building a better world for future generations? The Mission that started Wales’ Temple of Peace Visitors arriving at the North Door of Wales’ Temple of Peace – entrance to the ‘Peace Wing’ occupied today by WCIA (the Welsh Centre for International Affairs) and Wales’ leading internationalist organisations – are greeted by a seemingly out-of-date letterbox, in itself a treasured part of the buiding’s heritage, that begs to be opened and reveal its stories… It’s messages from the past.

SUMMARY The history of contact between Plaid Cymru and Welsh expatriate communities has been a neglected narrative. This thesis goes part of the way to remedying that situation by focusing on the interaction that occurred between Welsh-Americans and Plaid Cymru from 1925 to 1945. The party of 1925-1945 was not the same political entity as it is in 2015 and hence this study seeks to explore and understand Plaid’s essence during the specified time period. The ‘Welshness’ of Welsh-America is also explored, in order to better understand the ‘Welsh identity’ that was in existence at the time. The engagement between Plaid Cymru and Welsh-America occurred at an individual level, through personal correspondence, and also at an institutional level, through the Welsh- American press. That press, both English and Welsh medium, took a great interest in the party and played a part in Plaid’s fund-raising strategy. By interpreting these levels of engagement we arrive at a fuller understanding of how Plaid Cymru and Welsh-America interacted during the years from 1925 to 1945.
