A guide and list to a collection of Historic Railway Documents www.railarchive.org.uk to e mail click here December 2017 1 Since July 1971, this private collection of printed railway documents from pre grouping and pre nationalisation railway companies based in the UK; has sought to expand it‟s collection with the aim of obtaining a printed sample from each independent railway company which operated (or obtained it‟s act of parliament and started construction). There were over 1,500 such companies and to date the Rail Archive has sourced samples from over 800 of these companies. Early in 2001 the collection needed to be assessed for insurance purposes to identify a suitable premium. The premium cost was significant enough to warrant a more secure and sustainable future for the collection. In 2002 The Rail Archive was set up with the following objectives: secure an on-going future for the collection in a public institution reduce the insurance premium continue to add to the collection add a private collection of railway photographs from 1970‟s onwards provide a public access facility promote the collection ensure that the collection remains together in perpetuity where practical ensure that sufficient finances were in place to achieve to above objectives The archive is now retained by The Bodleian Library in Oxford to deliver the above objectives. This guide which gives details of paperwork in the collection and a list of railway companies from which material is wanted. The aim is to collect an item of printed paperwork from each UK railway company ever opened. -

When, ten days ago, the first copy of the " Evolution of the Steam Locomotive" was ready for sale, I did not expect to be called upon to write a preface for a new edition before 240 hours had expired. The author cannot but be gratified to know that the whole of the extremely large first edition was exhausted practically upon publication, and since many would-be readers are still unsupplied, the demand for another edition is pressing. Under these circumstances but slight modifications have been made in the original text, although additional particulars and illustrations have been inserted in the new edition. The new matter relates to the locomotives of the North Staffordshire, London., Tilbury, and Southend, Great Western, and London and North Western Railways. I sincerely thank the many correspondents who, in the few days that have elapsed since the publication: of the "Evolution of the , Steam Locomotive," have so readily assured me of - their hearty appreciation of the book. rj .;! Halesworth Area History Notes I. HALESWORTH IN THE 11 th CENTURY Modern Halesworth was founded during the Middle Saxon period (650AD=850AD), and probably situated on the side of a ridge of sand and gravel close to the Town River. The evidence we have of early Halesworth includes a row of large post-holes, a burial of possibly a male of middle age radio-carbon dated to 740AD, and a sub-circular pit containing sheep, pig and ox bones. The ox bones show evidence of butchery. Sherds of ‘Ipswich Ware’ pottery found near the post-holes suggest trading links with the large industrial and mercantile settlement of Ipswich. It is now thought likely that ‘Ipswich Ware’ did not find its way to North Suffolk until after about 720AD. Perhaps Halesworth was also a dependent settlement of the Royal Estate at Blythburgh. By the 11 th century the settlement had moved to the top of the ridge east of the church. It’s possible that ‘Halesuworda’ had become a strategic crossing place where the Town River and its marshy flood plain, were narrow enough to be crossed. Perhaps Halesworth was also a tax centre for the payment of geld, as well as a collecting point for produce from the surrounding countryside with craft goods, agricultural produce and food rents moving up and down the river between Halesworth, Blythburgh and the coastal port of Dunwich. At the time of the Norman Conquest ‘Halesuworda’ consisted of a rural estate held by Aelfric, and two smaller manors whose freemen were under the patronage of Ralph the Constable and Edric of Laxfield. -

CONSERVATION AREA APPRAISAL Needham Market NW © Crown copyright All rights reserved Mid Suffolk D C Licence no 100017810 2010 INTRODUCTION The conservation area in Needham Market was designated in 1970 by East Suffolk County Council, and inherited by Mid Suffolk District Council at its inception in 1974. It was last appraised and extended by Mid Suffolk District Council in 2000. The Council has a duty to review its conservation area designations from time to time, and this appraisal examines Needham Market under a number of different headings as set out in English Heritage’s ‘Guidance on Conservation Area Appraisals’ (2006). As such it is a straightforward appraisal of Needham Market’s built environment in conservation terms. This document is neither prescriptive nor overly descriptive, but more a demonstration of ‘quality of place’, sufficient for the briefing of the Planning Officer when assessing proposed works in the area. The Town Sign photographs and maps are thus intended to contribute as much as the text itself. As the English Heritage guidelines point out, the appraisal is to be read as a general overview, rather than as a comprehensive listing, and the omission of any particular building, feature or space does not imply that it is of no interest in conservation terms. APPENDIX 1: OWNERS AND INHABITANTS OF EASNEYE PREFACE I first came to Easneye in 1964, when I had been appointed as the Resident Tutor at All Nations Missionary College, which had just moved there from Taplow, near Maidenhead, Berkshire. I lived with my family in North Lodge, one of the cottages on the Easneye estate, for the next four years, but my connection with All Nations and Easneye has continued up to the present. I worked for thirty-four years full-time and for another seven years part-time, and now my son, who was only eighteen months old back in 1964, is a member of the All Nations faculty. I feel, therefore, that my long connection with the place gives me the interest and ability to look into and record something of the past history of Easneye and its inhabitants. Mr David Morris, the Principal of All Nations when it was at Taplow as well as for several years after the move to Easneye, and whose vision and hard work were vital in making the college what it is today, used to give a very informative and entertaining history of the site, the building, the Buxton family and the college (never dull but sometimes bordering on the over-imaginative!) Stratford Photo Tracings and Liquid Fuel Photo Tracings Drawings Lists Description: There are approximately 16000 engineering drawings covering locomotives, carriages and wagons, components, road vehicles and a miscellaneous variety of objects. There is an associated and quite unique card index system related to the drawings and a set of registers. System of arrangement: The engineering drawings have been sorted and listed in separate series based on the apparent practice of the drawing office at Stratford. The main series of the drawings can be categorised into four main types: 1. Photo tracings on wax linen. These acted as a master from which copies could be made for other purposes. 2. Office copies. These were prints on paper, with the earliest using a cyanotype photo process for copying, sometime additionally coloured, and kept in the drawing office. 3. Shop copies. These were on a variety of materials tacked onto wooden rods and used in the workshops. They have survived in this condition and are inevitably uniformly dirty and frequently in poor condition. 4. Bench-hole copies. These were separate from the main series, as only about 20% originated at Stratford. Most came from external sources. Essentially they formed a technical reference library of ideas and suggestions. They were folded and stored flat in a pigeonhole system. In total they comprise approximately 16000 drawings. There is duplication between the various series but the extent of this has not yet been appraised. The main series of drawings runs potentially from 1 to 42459, plus ‘attachments’ and ‘parts’ drawings. Most of these drawings have not survived into the present, as a result of periodic culls of material. -

HENRY DAVY, 1793-1865 By THE REVD. A. H. DENNEY,B.A. The family of Davy appears to have resided at Westhall from at least the latter part of the sixteenth century; but a precise genealogy is not easy to construct from the entries in the Registers which date from the 1570s. However the accompanying table (Fig. 11) will supply the immediate ancestry of Henry and his descendants who have survived into the present century. Al- though Farrer attempts to work out a genealogical connection between the Suffolk antiquary David Elisha Davy and Henry Davy, yet so far the present writer has been unable to substantiate this. David Elisha was nephew of Eleazar Davy of Yoxford and the latter had considerable proprietary interest in Westhall, but this seems to be coincidental; as was also the marriage of Henry's half-brother Thomas to Anne Barker of Sibton and the settlement of the couple on a farm at Yoxford. If any relationship did in fact exist between the Yoxford and Westhall families it originated in the seventeenth century; and David Elisha, in his full and numerous genealogical tables of Suffolk families, makes no mention of it (B.M. Add. MSS. 19126). Henry was born on 30 May 1793, the son of Thomas Davy, farmer of Westhall, and Sarah, his second wife, daughter of W. Gibson, Esq., M.D. of Willingham Hall. He spent his childhood in his father's house, of which he has left us a charming water-colour amongst the large collection of his works at the British Museum (Add.
