Seton Youth Shelters is the region’s only organization devoted exclusively to providing shelter, street outreach and mentoring services to youth 9-17. Guests enjoy authentic mint juleps, Derby Hat Contest, live horse races, giant screen broadcast of the Run for the Roses at Churchill Downs, and more, all while enabling us to provide prevention, intervention, shelter and counseling to youth 9-17 in crisis and their families-24 hours a day, 365 days a year, at no charge to the child or their family. Baffert won additional Preakness scrums with Derby disappointments Point Given and Lookin At Lucky for a record 7 wins in the traditional second leg of the Triple Crown. This year, things are just a bit different (the understatement of all time). With the truncated 2020 Belmont Stakes already in the books, Preakness is presented one month – instead of two weeks – after the Kentucky Derby. A month between Derby and Preakness shouldn’t bother Authentic at all. So far, not much has. He’s lost just 1 of 6 starts and his Derby triumph shushed critics who had suggested the colt might be distance- challenged. While it’s possible that extra time between this year’s Derby and Preakness might permit a new face to adequately prepare to challenge Authentic for current sophomore preeminence, that mission will need to be completed on the racetrack…and it won’t be easy. That year, in response to the Tet Offensive in January, the U.S. presence in Viet Nam peaked at a troop level in excess of half a million. Within a two month span that spring, the horror of assassination struck both MLK and RFK. Viet Nam and Civil Rights generated a fissure in America so acute that a shadow of despair loomed over every band on the spectrum of the body politic. LBJ, in a virtual abdication, declined to seek re-election shortly after a narrow win in the New Hampshire primary. Richard Nixon defeated Vice- President Hubert Humphrey in that fall’s general election while George Wallace’s third-party candidacy carried five states in the Deep South. In the spring 0f 1968, the hardened constituents of thoroughbred racing found a welcomed respite in the ninety-fourth running of the Kentucky Derby. That interlude from strife proved brief. The favorite at 2.20/1 was Calumet Farm’s Forward Pass who sought to succeed Whirlaway (’41), Pensive (’44), Citation (’48), Ponder (’49), Hill Gail (’52), Iron Liege (’57), and Tim Tam (’58) as the eighth Calumet rep wearing the roses. Dancer’s Image, a son of Native Dancer owned by Boston sportsman Peter Fuller, was the tepid second choice at 3.60/1.
