White Paper on Sport in Japan 2017
Sports Facilities 73 Chapter 4 Sports Facilities I. Current Status of Sports Facilities 1. Public, Private and School Facilities According to the “Social Education Survey” of Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), the number of public sports facilities in Japan increased from the time the survey started in the 1950s through the 1990s. However, the number stayed almost at the same level after 2002. In 2011, the number of public sports facilities was 47,531 (Figure 4-1). On the other hand, the number of private sports facilities reached a peak in 1996 with 18,146, then continued to decline through 2015 where the number was recorded as 15,363. Moreover, many schools and educational organizations own sports facilities such as gymnasiums, playgrounds and swimming pools, which are used for their physical education classes or school sports clubs. According to the “Survey on the Current Status of Facilities for Physical Education and Sports Activities” (2008) conducted by MEXT, there were 136,276 “school sports facilities” (in elementary, junior high, high, vocational schools, etc.) and 8,375 sports facilities at universities, colleges and technical colleges. In addition, the number of sports facilities for the welfare of employees amounted to 6,827, and 5,807 facilities were recorded being located with activity centers such as community centers, youth education facilities and women’s education centers. In Table 4-1, the number of public sports facilities and school sports facilities are shown by facility types. The public sports facilities were dominated by multi-purpose playgrounds (7,568), followed by gymnasiums (7,112), and baseball and softball fields (6,267). -

Chapter-Ii Historical Background of Public Schools
C H APTER -II HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF PUBLIC SCHOOLS 2.0 INTRODUCTORY REMARKS The purpose of this chapter is to give an account of historical back ground of Public Schools, both in England and in India. It is essential to know the origin and development of Public Schools in England, as Public Schools in India had been transplanted from England. 2.1 ORIGIN OF THE TERM PUBLIC SCHOOL The term 'Public School' finds its roots in ancient times. In ancient time kings and bishops used to run the schools for the poor. No fee was charged. All used to live together. It was a union of 'classes'. The expenses were met by public exchequer. Thus the name was given to these schools as Public Schools. 2.2 ESTABLISHMENT OF FIRST PUBLIC SCHOOLS William of Wykeham, Bishop of Winchester established 'Saint Marie College' at Winchester in 1382. This foundation made a crucial departure from previous practice and thus, has a great historical importance. All the previous schools had been ancillary to other establishments; they Kod been established as parts of cathedrals, collegiate churches, monasteries, chantries, hospitals or university colleges. The significance of this college is its independent nature. 17 Its historian, A.F. Leach says "Thus for the first time a school was established as a sovereign and independent corporation, existing by and for itself, self-centered and self-governed."^ The foundation of Winchester College is considered to be the origin of the English Public School because of three conditions: 1. Pupils were to be accepted from anywhere in England (though certain countries had priority). -

With a contingent of 39 members, all brimming with excitement and anticipation, team SIBM left for Jamshedpur on 21st July. The 30 hour train journey turned out to be a great bonding time between the MBA I and MBA II players. Seniors shared their past year experiences and boosted the morale of the juniors for the upcoming event. We reached XLRI on the 23rd and began practicing for the events lined up for the next day. This year the events were scheduled as per the ‘round robin’ tournament and not ‘knockouts’ as were held in the previous years. This meant double the hard work. The following colleges took part in the events apart from the host college, XLRI. SIBM Pune IIM Calcutta IIM Raipur XIMB Our college competed in the following events- FOOTBALL The first match of our team was held on the 23rd against XIMB. A heated opening match ensued following the kick-off. Our team’s lack of control of the game during the first half resulted in conceding 2 goals before the half time. Our comeback with Suraj Nair’s stunning bicycle kick and Adarsh Srinivasan’s impressive curling free kick goal from 23 yards helped us level the score. -
