Despite the recognized value of biological collections for the rigorous study of biodiversity, there is scarce information on the monetary costs of specimens. We present results for three expeditions conducted in Santander (municipalities of Cimitarra, El Carmen de Chucurí, and Santa Barbara), Colombia, during 2018 to collect bird voucher specimens, quantifying the costs of obtaining such material. After a sampling effort of 1290 mist net hours and occasional collection using an airgun, we collected 300 bird voucher specimens, representing 117 species from 30 families. -

BIRDING THE HUMBOLDT CURRENT We will visit the guano bird colonies of the San Lorenzo, Palomino and Cavinzas Islands, observe pelagic birds that only live offshore, we will see the huge colony of sea lions of the Palomino Islands and observe different species of cetaceans. South American Sea Lion colony | © Jean Paul Perret ITINERARY 05:40 AM Encounter at the dock and registration of the participants. 06:00 AM Boarding from the Marina Yacht Club del Callao ( location map ), located half a block from Plaza Grau in Callao, not to be confused with the La Punta club. 06:30 AM Visit to the colonies of guano birds of San Lorenzo Island. 08:00 AM Start of the “chum " bait session 16 miles from the coast. 10: 00 AM Start of return to port. 11: 00 PM Arrival at the Marina Yacht Club Del Callao. TOUR DESCRIPTION The tour begins with a short navigation to Cabezo Norte sector of San Lorenzo Island, the largest island of the Peruvian coast; at its summit we will see the Gran Almirante Grau Lighthouse. Later we will begin to observe some very interesting species of birds such as the Humboldt Penguin, the Red-legged Cormorant, Peruvian Booby, Peruvian Pelican, Guanay Cormorant, Inca Tern, Blackish Oystercatcher and the endemic Surf Cinclodes. According to the season we can also find some migratory species such as the Surfbirds, Ruddy Turnstone, Whimbrel, Royal Tern, and Elegant Tern. During the navigation we will start to observe some pelagic birds such as the Peruvian Diving-petrel, Sooty Shearwaters, Pink-footed Shearwater, Wilson's Storm-petrel, Swallow-tailed Gull, Sabine's Gull, Chilean Skua, Parasite Jaeger, Phalarops and with a bit of luck Waved Albatross. -
Animals of the Cloud Forest: Isotopic Variation of Archaeological Faunal Remains from Kuelap, Peru
ANIMALS OF THE CLOUD FOREST: ISOTOPIC VARIATION OF ARCHAEOLOGICAL FAUNAL REMAINS FROM KUELAP, PERU by SAMANTHA MARIE MICHELL B.S. Idaho State University, 2014 A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Department of Anthropology in the College of Sciences at the University of Central Florida Orlando, Florida Summer Term 2018 © 2018 Samantha Michell ii ABSTRACT Stable isotopic analyses of faunal remains are used as a proxy for reconstructing the ancient Chachapoya dietary environment of the northeastern highlands in Peru. Archaeologists have excavated animal remains from refuse piles at the monumental center of Kuelap (AD 900-1535). This archaeological site is located at 3000 meters above sea level (m.a.s.l.), where C3 plants dominate the region. The study presented here is one of the few in the Central Andes that uses faunal remains to develop local isotopic baselines, reconstruct resource exploitation, and provide insight into dietary variation. Bone collagen stable carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) isotopes are used to investigate animal diets of nine local fauna (Camelidae, Cervidae, Caviidae, Chinchillidae, Cuniculidae, Leporidae, Felidae, Canidae, and Aves). Different taxonomic families were evaluated to explore the range of isotopic variation within and between these animals. Stable carbon and nitrogen isotopic values of both the wild and domesticated Kuelap faunal samples suggest a diet of both C3 and C4 plant foods. Significant dietary differences were identified between domesticated and wild animals (specifically camelid and cervid), suggesting ecological differences or strategic provisioning from possible domestic C4 crops (maize) by humans. The domesticated camelids displayed a large isotopic variation similar to other highland archaeological studies in Peru, with an average δ13C value of –14.13 ‰ and a standard deviation of 2.96. -

Rev Arg Parasitol Vol. 3 - Nº 1 - Octubre 2014 ISSN: 2313-9862 REGISTROS PARASITOLÓGICOS EN RODENT MIDDENS DEL PARQUE NACIONAL PERITO MORENO, SANTA CRUZ, ARGENTINA Fugassa M H* ARTICULO RESUMEN: Se comunican los primeros hallazgos parasitológicos en rodent middens en un depósito corres- pondiente a Lagidium wolffsohni hallado en Santa Cruz, Argentina. Una muestra de los fragmentos del rodent middens obtenidos del alero de una cueva se procesaron por rehidratación en una solución acuosa de fosfato trisódico y los restos parasitarios se concentraron por flotación y sedimentación espontánea. Se observaron treinta y cinco preparados transitorios bajo el microscopio óptico, registrándose huevos de nematodes perte- necientes a capiláridos (Capillariidae), Trichuris sp. (Trichiuridae), un oxiúrido del género Heteroxynema y un cestode de la subfamilia Anoplocephalinae. Los huevos de capiláridos son similares a los de Calodium hepati- cum. Lagidium wolffsohni es un roedor endémico y raro de modo que resulta importante para su conservación conocer sus parásitos considerando que pueden vulnerar a sus poblaciones. Palabras clave: Parque Nacional Perito Moreno, helmintos gastrointestinales, coproparasitología, Lagidium wolffsohni. ABSTRACT: In this report, the results of the first parasitological examination in rodent middens belonging to Lagidium wolffsohni obtained from a cave in the Santa Cruz Province, Argentina are communicated. A sample of fragments of rodent middens was rehydrated in aqueous trisodium phosphate and parasitic remains concen- trated by flotation and spontaneous sedimentation. Thirty five transitory slides were observed under a light mi- croscope. Nematode eggs of family Capillariidae, Trichuris sp. (Trichiuridae), a member of the family Oxiuridae, Heteroxynema genus, and one of the subfamily Anoplocephalinae cestode were identified. -

Our bird of the trip – the simply stunning Golden-backed Mountain Tanager (Pete Morris) CENTRAL PERU 9 – 25/27 JULY 2013 LEADERS: PETE MORRIS This was the second time that I have had the privilege of leading this wonderful tour to some of the more remote and definitely more scenic parts of Peru’s central Andes. With a somewhat quicker vehicle and some efficient back-up, the tour went surprisingly well. We had very few logistical problems, the journeys went much more quickly in our faster vehicle and the weather was largely good. Best of all though were the birds, and in this department we were truly spoilt, with just about all of the targeted specialities showing very well, and a few surprises too! Pride of place must go to the stunning Golden-backed Mountain Tanager, that was inevitably 1 BirdQuest Tour Report: Central Peru 2013 www.birdquest-tours.com The unique White-cheeked Cotinga showed very well on this year’s tour (Pete Morris) our bird of the tour, but the supporting cast was strong. High up tiny Diademed Plovers, Puna Tinamous and critically endangered White-bellied Cinclodes were particularly popular, whilst the little-known Junin Crake and Junin Grebe both excited us. Bay-vented and White-cheeked Cotingas both obliged, Masked, Band- tailed, Barred and ‘Huánuco’ Fruiteaters added colour, a whole suite of poorly-known tapaculos showed well, Stripe-headed, Bay, Chestnut, Rufous and Undulated Antpittas all gave great views and other rarities includ- ed Andean Snipe, Taczanowski’s Tinamou, stunning Orange-breasted Falcons, Fiery-throated and Coppery Metaltails, Bronze-tailed Comet, Tawny Tit-Spinetail, Ash-breasted and Unstreaked Tit-Tyrants, Rufous-breast- ed and Plain-tailed Warbling Finches, Rufous-backed and Great Inca Finches, Pardusco and the stunning Rufous-browed Hemispingus. -
