WHITE [email protected] Everyone was always welcome at my grandmother’s house except on one occasion--New Year’s Day. My grandmother didn’t hang a sign on the door, but it was widely understood that, if you were a woman and you weren’t the Virgin Mary, you were not welcome until after her first male visitor came and walked through the house. When the clock ushered in the new year, my grandfather and uncles would stand on the porch and in the yard with their guns and begin shooting at Rising floodwaters the moon.
