    For Immediate Release: July 19, 2019 Gaming Commission Statement on the Passing of Marylou Whitney The passing of Marylou Whitney is a sad day not only for the sport of horse racing but also to the State of New York. Her life and work reflected her passion for the sport of horse racing and support of the racing community. However, her devotion to racing did not end on the front side of the track but included the community’s backstretch workers – the heart and soul of a racetrack. Her support was not confined to racing as she was instrumental in providing invaluable financial support to several philanthropic events and causes including the 1980 Winter Olympics which was experiencing financial difficulties. Ironically, her death comes at the start of the Saratoga Meet. She was instrumental in supporting Saratoga and the Saratoga Race Course. For over six decades, Marylou made New York her home with homes in the Adirondacks, on Fifth Avenue, as well as in Saratoga Springs. In 2018, Mrs. Whitney represented three generations of Whitney’s who were inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame as Pillars of the Turf. Marylou was well known for hosting the Whitney Gala, an extravagant event conducted every summer the night before the Whitney Stakes. Marylou began hosting the gala in the 1960s, when she arrived in Saratoga Springs for the first time as the wife of Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitney. She was an “an irreplaceable ambassador” to not only thoroughbred racing, but to Saratoga and the Empire State. There is no doubt that the 2019 Saratoga Season will be different, as she will not be present for the 92nd running of the Whitney Stakes.

At three he competed in the 2004 Kentucky Derby but skipped the Preakness. On Belmont day he and Edgar Prado settled in toward the back, sat chilly while Derby and Preakness took the lead, then just when it looked like Smarty might win the Triple Crown, Birdstone came flying in the final stretch to win the Belmont. That summer he accomplished a similar feat in a rainy 2004 Travers Stakes (G1). He retired with five wins in nine starts and $1,575,600 earnings. At stud at Gainesway Farm, Birdstone sired 2009 Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird, 2009 Belmont Stakes winner Summer Bird, 2015 Stephen Foster Handicap (G1) winner Noble Bird and other stakes winners. For the museum that bears his name and is located on the property is getting its mojo back after languish- ing the past few decades. IThanks to a determined new board president, an active volunteer board, a knowledgeable curator, and POLISHING a public that seems to have a re- newed interest in Headley’s unusual creations, the museum is regaining its place as a cultural highlight of the Bluegrass. The biggest thanks should go to Headley himself. As the son of one Bluegrass horse family who married into another, he could easily have become a dilettante, flitting from racetrack to racetrack, mint julep in hand and Racing Form at the ready. At the very least, he might have been expected to join the family business. Instead, he chose bibelots over bloodstock. A one-time student at L’Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris and friends with the likes of Alexander Calder and Salvador Dali, he made a name for himself designing bibelots, one-of-a-kind decorative ornaments using precious and semi-precious gem stones. But we’re getting ahead of the A JEWELstory. Before Headley brought his bibelots to the Bluegrass, he was known as the jeweler to the stars, as well as a crackerjack marketer.
