Let's Go Racing Show TRAINER When the newly turned 3-year-old HARRY filly My Best Friend passed the WYNER ON eighth pole with a clear lead in the A ROLL AT seventh race at Aqueduct on Jan. 6, PARX 2019, her trainer Harry Wyner could have been excused if his mind started to wonder to what the July 12th, 2020 New York bred owned by John Fanelli might be able to conquer By Dick next. Jerardi Then, My Best Friend started to shorten stride. She wasn’t getting tired. When you watch the replay now, you can tell something was going wrong. The filly had suffered a major leg injury. “She spiral fractured a cannon bone,’’ Wyner said, “She still finished second. We had to van her off. We gave her a year and a half off and it’s healed.’’ Dr. Patty Hogan explained to Wyner that surgery was not an option for the injury. So it was just all about time. “John was a fantastic owner with this horse, lots of patience,’’ Wyner said. And there was My Best Friend well in front at the eighth pole in the sixth race at Parx on July 7. She kept on running right through the wire, 5 3/4 lengths clear at the finish. It was a very emotional win for obvious reasons. But not nearly the only win. Wyner’s horses won another race that day and two more the next day. “It’s an unbelievable feeling,’’ he said. “We went through the coronavirus. We never ran a horse. I kept these horses training and my help kept with me and did a tremendous job. Without them, I wouldn’t be able to do this. My horses just came back firing.’’ Wyner, originally from Manchester, England, rode steeplechase horses for Michael Dickinson in his native country. When Dickinson moved his operation to America in the late 1980s, Wyner came with him as a groom and exercise rider. His riding background really helps as a trainer. He tries to get on each of his horses at least twice per week. Wyner has had some very nice horses in his training career which began in 2004. He had English Manor at the beginning of his career. The horse ended up running an incredible 115 times, with 15 wins, 20 second, 13 thirds and earnings of $344,650. Parx Horsemen’s Bookkeeper No More Tattoos Horse Identity established through the TRPB Digital Tattoo Effective January 1, 2020, any Thoroughbred that has not been previously lip tattooed and is making its first lifetime start in a recognized pari-mutuel race, must have the TRPB Digital Tattoo in order to be correctly identified in the paddock and permitted to race. The transition to the TRPB Digital Tattoo follows the recent requirement by The Jockey Club for a horse to be microchipped as part of the registration process. All foals from 2017 onward have a listed microchip on their Jockey Club papers. The Association of Racing Commissioners International (ARCI) passed a model rule regarding Digital Tattoos. The model rule states, effective January 1, 2020, the racing secretary shall ensure that the registration certificates for all Thoroughbred horses that were foaled in 2018 or thereafter have a Digital Tattoo prior to entry in a race. In essence, the Digital Tattoo is an electronic validation of the identity of a horse performed by a trained TRPB technician. The technician will use a scanner to read the horse's microchip and the microchip number will hyperlink to electronic registration information. After fully examining the markings and foal photos contained in the horse's electronic record, the technician will confirm the identity of the horse standing in front of him or her and upload a selection of digital pictures documenting the horse's markings to The Jockey Club's database. The TRPB technician will then place a digital stamp on the electronic certificate of registration. This Digital Tattoo will indicate that the TRPB has verified the identity of the horse and uploaded updated digital photographs to the breed registry's database. For additional information regarding the Digital Tattoo, please click here for FAQ's or contact TRPB at [email protected]. Digital Foal Certificates for 2018 and on foals need to be attached to the owner's user account and transferred each time the horse races at a different track. To learn how to do this, go to The Jockey Club Digital Certificate Management Video and watch the tutorial. Bear with us as everyone navigates the new system. • Eoin Harty in Profile by ED GOLDEN Turf Writer
Eoin Harty in Profile By ED GOLDEN Turf Writer There was always an air of levity at Bob Baffert’s barn when Eoin Harty worked there. Not that the game they played wasn’t serious. It was. Preparing 1,000-pound equine athletes with spindly legs to perform at their peak on the world’s stage is not a job for anyone in short pants. During the seven years Harty was Baffert’s assistant, they won the Kentucky Derby twice–with Silver Charm in 1997 and Real Quiet in 1998–and missed by a heart-breaking nose with Cavonnier in 1996. But in between the regimented tedium, there was always time for a good hoot. Fact is, it was and still is part of Baffert’s DNA. “He’s got a sense of humor,” Baffert said of Harty. “He has a good disposition and we liked to have a lot of fun, so he fit in well.” But work came first, and Harty had his priorities in order. His foundation was ingrained. Lean and sinewy with chiseled features, Harty hails from a family of Irish horsemen that extends back at least five generations. His grandfather, great grandfather, and great-great grandfather were trainers in their native Ireland. Eoin (pronounced Owen) began to hone his craft under the learned wing of the late John Russell before joining with Baffert, who saw a © BENOIT PHOTO master in the making. “Eoin showed up every day,” Baffert recalled. “He works hard and he’s passionate about what he does, and I like that in all my assistants.

Goldencents Set to Run Next in Cigar Mile By Steve Haskin, @SteveHaskin BloodHorse.com Photo: Dave Harmon Goldencents won the 2013 Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile. Goldencents, winner of the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (gr. I), will make his next start in the $500,000 Cigar Mile (gr. I) at Aqueduct Racetrack Nov. 30, according to majority owner Glenn Sorgenstein. "After the Breeders' Cup we looked at the race and thought (the Cigar mile) might come up little quick, but Doug (trainer O'Neill) and I decided to watch the horse and let him tell us," Sorgenstein said Nov. 7. "He bounced out of the race as if he hadn't run. Each day, his ears were pricked, he was alert and ready to go, and he was looking for his food. He showed no signs of stiffness and has been perfectly sound. "Originally, I had told Doug that the Malibu Stakes (gr. I) makes sense, because we wouldn't have to ship, it was his home track (Santa Anita Park), and we'd be assured of good weather. But then I started thinking, 'What the heck; from the polls we've seen, he's second to Will Take Charge as leading 3-year-old, and sending him to New York would give the East Coast writers an opportunity to see him race. And Aqueduct is a good fast track where speed holds.' "It took while, but we've finally figured out the jockey situation and we feel confident with Rafael (Bejarano). We feel he'll (Goldencents) do great in New York and we owed it to him to get him out there.

THT BLOODSTOCK: PATTERNS OF MOTION ANALYSIS WITH KERRY THOMAS AND PETE DENK KENTUCKY DERBY 147 | MAY 1, 2021 | THT BLOODSTOCK: PATTERNS OF MOTION | 1 KENTUCKY DERBY 2021 HERD DYNAMICS ANALYSIS A personal note from Kerry M. Thomas This year’s Kentucky Derby report was in jeopardy. Not because of all that has been going on in the world, but because the uncertainty and overwhelming emotional stress in my personal life had me close to pulling out the white flag. My dearly beloved life-partner Tonia, who had been battling cancer since the summer of 2018, passed away in March. Breast cancer had traveled to her brain, (my father died of brain cancer, also at home, in 2002) and two days after my birthday on October 22, 2020, we were told Tonia had 6 months to live. She passed on March 6th, 2021. Two days after Tonia left us, my mother, who I also am caregiver for, fell and fractured her hip. At the writing of this very sentence my mother is yet in a rehab facility struggling to recover. It goes without saying that as March churned into April, doing our 11th derby report wasn’t high on my list of things to do. But there was something that wasn’t right about not doing our analysis of the contenders. It was a quiet nudge I was unable to ignore. I just couldn’t let the horses run away from me. I began to realize that not doing the report wasn’t an option, I needed the distraction. Horses are my passion and racing is the sport I love.

  • Whitney Statement7.19.19
For Immediate Release: July 19, 2019 Gaming Commission Statement on the Passing of Marylou Whitney The passing of Marylou Whitney is a sad day not only for the sport of horse racing but also to the State of New York. Her life and work reflected her passion for the sport of horse racing and support of the racing community. However, her devotion to racing did not end on the front side of the track but included the community’s backstretch workers – the heart and soul of a racetrack. Her support was not confined to racing as she was instrumental in providing invaluable financial support to several philanthropic events and causes including the 1980 Winter Olympics which was experiencing financial difficulties. Ironically, her death comes at the start of the Saratoga Meet. She was instrumental in supporting Saratoga and the Saratoga Race Course. For over six decades, Marylou made New York her home with homes in the Adirondacks, on Fifth Avenue, as well as in Saratoga Springs. In 2018, Mrs. Whitney represented three generations of Whitney’s who were inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame as Pillars of the Turf. Marylou was well known for hosting the Whitney Gala, an extravagant event conducted every summer the night before the Whitney Stakes. Marylou began hosting the gala in the 1960s, when she arrived in Saratoga Springs for the first time as the wife of Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitney. She was an “an irreplaceable ambassador” to not only thoroughbred racing, but to Saratoga and the Empire State. There is no doubt that the 2019 Saratoga Season will be different, as she will not be present for the 92nd running of the Whitney Stakes.
