FINAL INSTRUCTIONS - THE MAGNIFICENT VELOGAINE 2020

4 HOUR VELOGAINE

22 August 2020, 10.00AM – 2.00PM The Magnificent Velogaine 2020 is an event where teams of between 2 and 5 riders cycle to checkpoints aided by a and . Each checkpoint (control) is given a point value and at the end of the time period the team that has collected the most points is the winner. In the event of tied point scores the shortest time wins. Points are deducted for returning late and disqualification happens after 2:30 pm.

COVID-19 precautions apply to this event. Ensure that you bring a supply of hand sanitiser and some soap, water, towel and a tub to wash your hands upon arrival and at the conclusion of the event (before returning to the Hash House with your eating utensils for lunch).

Location The event start and finish is at the Kuitpo Paintball Centre, 899 Blackfellows Creek Rd, Mt Magnificent.

There are two routes that you can take depending on point of origin.

From the southern suburbs get onto the Victor Harbor Rd and go past McLaren Vale and Willunga. 3.5 km after the top of the Willunga Hill turn left onto Yundi Road, which becomes Enterprise Rd. Turn left across a ford onto Blackfellows Creek Rd. 2.8 kilometres after crossing the ford then turn right into a sign posted paddock car park. This route has only 3 km of gravel road.

From the eastern suburbs travel via Clarendon/Kangarilla or Meadows to Prospect Hill. Travelling south through Prospect Hill, turn right at the Museum down past the Memorial Hall onto Harvey Rd, which becomes Blackfellows Creek Rd by following the bitumen. After the bitumen turns to gravel, proceed for 7 kms until you observe Kuitpo Paintball Sports on the left. PROCEED PAST the main driveway and turn left after 400 m into the signposted paddock carpark. This route has approximately 7 km of gravel road with some potholes.

In either case allow approximately 90 minutes from the CBD. Drive slowly and carefully on the gravel sections. Toilets The toilet facilities at the hash house are limited so it is recommended that you take advantage of toilets en route at McLaren Vale (177 Main Road), Willunga (Recreation Park Aldinga Rd) or Prospect Hill (behind the Memorial Hall) if needed.

Parking After arriving, follow the sign through a gate and track on the uphill side of the road and park in the paddock car park. There are over 60 teams entered so be space-efficient in your parking please. The parking is in a paddock, and rain has been falling. Be attentive for boggy and slippery patches. If you have a choice, bring your 4WD or higher ground clearance SUV.

Wash your hands with the soap and water that you brought along and apply sanitiser, then make your way north along the road about 400 metres to the main Paintball headquarters to register. Bring your own pen to fill in the Indemnity Form.

Timings The event will be held over 4 hours beginning at 10.00am and concluding at 2 pm. Your team will be penalised 10 points for every minute or part minute you are late returning to the finish. This time is taken from the last team member to finish. For example, if the last member of a team finishes 1 minute and 20 seconds late the team is penalised 20 points. If teams are level on points at the end of the event then ride time will determine the placings.

Event Categories There will be a category for electric bikes. Only bikes that meet the SA Government definition here: https://www.sa.gov.au/topics/driving-and-transport/cycling/riding-a-power-assisted-bicycle are admissible. If any bike in your team is an eBike then the team entry will be categorised as an eBike team. The ebike and human powered bike results will be posted separately.

Maps, and Terrain Registration starts at 8:30 am and will be given out from 9.00am. The controls are mostly on public roads, in Kuitpo Forest and in road reserves. In some cases minor roads become farm entry driveways and these are marked with an “X” on the map and are prohibited areas. Other tracks and roads on the map are public. Teams must not enter private land.

Roads vary from bitumen to good dirt roads to forest roads and fire tracks. The terrain isn’t overly technical and you won’t need to be an ace on single track to be competitive.

Safety Take care on the roads and obey all road rules. There are no road closures for the event and some of the bitumen roads are 100 km/h zones used by traffic that will not be expecting cyclists. Even on the gravel roads, be aware that drivers will not expect to see many other road users. Particularly be careful on crests. Look and listen for vehicles. There are some descents on the gravel roads where you may lose control. Ride within your capabilities.

While no snakes have been seen on the some sections do have long grass and each team is required to have a roller bandage in case of snake bite. Bandages will be for sale at the start.

Phone coverage has been good over the entire map although some black spots can’t be ruled out. In the event of a serious incident phone 000 for emergency services. For less serious events call the Event Admin team on 0419 813 479 for instructions.

COVID-19 social distancing and sanitation rules will apply in order to meet our COVIDSafe Plan responsibilities.

Maps Maps will be printed on waterproof paper. Map scale 1:50,000. Contour interval 10 metres.

Registration Registration begins at 8.30 am with maps available from 9 am. An indemnity form will need to be signed by all team members (or their parent/guardian). It will assist the admin crew if you know your team number (from the entry list). Please be careful about social distancing whilst queuing for registration.

Food and Water There are no water points on the course. Water is available at the Hash House which is centrally located. There is a feed store/fuel stop at the top of Old Willunga Hill (SW corner of the course) for water in the event of distress. Depending on the weather forecast each rider should carry at least 2 litres of drinking water.

Other Rules and Information Your visit to a control will be validated by you punching a control card. Cards do not need to be attached to bikes and the card can be carried by different team members at different times in the event. Cards will be given out just before the start at the briefing (9.45 am). The controls consist of an orange and white plate to which a punch is attached. All team members must go within 25 metres of a control and must remain in verbal contact when riding between controls. Road rules must be obeyed and please show courtesy to any other road or trail users you may encounter. The number of the control gives its point value but note that only the first number counts. So, for example, control 21 is worth 20 points, not 21 points.

Please leave all gates as you found them and respect private property.

At the ride briefings there may be updated information given out about some control placements and the state of some roads/tracks/rivers so it is essential that you attend the briefing.

Lunch and Afterwards Lunch will be available after the ride (from 1.30pm) for riders. It will be simple rogaining fare of wraps, muffins, drinks and cordial. There will be some gluten free, and vegetarian by leaving out the meat. Bring your plate, mug, KFS and tea towel. It’s probably good to bring a chair to have a rest and debate your course selection whilst the results and presentations are prepared and announced.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions the food will be served by the hash house team. We will not be able to provide any common used facilities like tea/coffee, washing up tubs or let you serve yourself.
