Those who can, do. Those who can do more, volunteer!

If you’re interested in voluntary work for the Alyth community, we’d love to welcome you onto the Alyth Voice team. Most of us need a deputy, and the more volunteers we have, the easier it becomes for everyone to volunteer! We really need your help (and volunteering looks great on your c.v.!) so do come along to the AGM and find out more.

We honestly don’t bite - except on a full moon!

NEWS - IMPORTANT NOTICE

Starting in January 2019 should you wish to place any articles or adverts in the Voice they both need to arrive with us no later that the 14th of the month.

ALL ARTICLES AND ADVERTS NEED TO BE WITH US BY 14th JAN 2019 FOR THE FEBRUARY ISSUE

The Alyth Voice is a free monthly newsletter, managed, written, and delivered by volunteers.

EDITOR’S LETTER

Welcome to the November issue of the Alyth Voice!

The big news in the last month has been the official opening of the new path for cyclists and walkers connecting Alyth and Rattray. This is the first phase of the ambitious £1.6-million Strathmore Cycle Network that will eventually link Alyth, Blairgowrie/Rattray and Coupar Angus, avoiding main roads as much as possible, improving road safety and helping to cut carbon emissions and pollution by encouraging more walking and cycling.

Several dozen people attended the opening, at which local schoolboy Harris Brown cut the ribbon to mark the opening. STV, The Courier, Radio Tay, the Perthshire Advertiser and the Blairie all covered the event extensively, helping to put our corner of Perthshire firmly on the map. We congratulate the development trusts in the three towns, the landowners, the Council and all the funding bodies who have helped the project get this far!

The next big thing will be the completion of work on the Market Square rebuild, and I’m sure we’re all looking forward to enjoying this year’s Christmas Lights switch-on in magnificent new surroundings. Just to alert you, we’ll be delaying printing the December issue of the Voice by a few days to be sure of including a photo-spread of the switch-on event.

And there’s more physical improvement to look forward to as Alyth in Bloom make steady progress towards realising their exciting burnside improvement project. You can read their latest report on that and all the other splendid work they do in this issue of the Voice - they are an object lesson in what a dedicated band of volunteers can achieve!

Speaking of dedicated volunteers - the Alyth Voice team would love to welcome you all to our 2018 Alyth Voice AGM, as featured on this month’s front page. Why not pop along and tell us your hopes and ideas for the Voice?

Looking slightly further ahead, we’re changing our deadlines to ease the production bottleneck just before each issue comes out. With effect from the February issue, we’ll be asking for both editorial to be submitted to us at the same time as advertisements - that is, the 14th of the preceding month. This means that for the February issue, we will need your adverts and your editorial text by the 14th of January.

Finally, many thanks to the Blairgowrie and District Trefoil Guild, The Isla Parishes and to Bruce Maxwell for their very generous donations to the Voice in October.

Best wishes,

Kevin Coe Editor

New “Museum Without Walls” - The Cateran Ecomuseum - receives pilot funding

Plans for a new ‘museum without walls’ in Eastern Perthshire and Western Angus have been given a major boost with the award of grants from the European LEADER Fund and the Drumderg Windfarm, plus a lot of hard graft by a group of local people from Alyth and Glenisla.

Set in the beautiful and dramatic landscapes of the area, (recently been rebranded as Cateran Country by the Blairgowrie and East Perthshire Tourism Association), all of the Ecomuseum sites will be outside.

Originating in France in the 1970s, Ecomuseums focus on the identity of a place with the term “éco” being a shortened form for “écologie”. Still a relatively new concept, there are around 300 worldwide and only one © Clare Cooper other in Scotland, on Skye.

Set in specific landscapes, they offer: a unique mechanism for empowering local people to manage their own heritage by taking an active role in preserving the objects, sites and cultural practices they value; a much broader and deeper way of interpreting cultural heritage, quite different from the traditional museums based inside buildings focus on specific items and objects; an new way of developing sustainable cultural tourism.

The idea for the Cateran Ecomuseum came from the Caterans’ Common Wealth initiative and work undertaken by Alyth Development Trust, local tourism businesses and Scottish Enterprise in 2017, which recognised that more could be done to develop the area’s tourism destination potential by promoting its very rich and diverse culture and heritage.

In the Spring of 2018, the Ecomuseum was set up as a social enterprise with three founding Directors, Meg Mearns and Kevin Grieg from Glenisla and Clare Cooper from Alyth who have been working hard raising funds to get it off the ground.

This first stage of work aims to identify up to 15 sites and experiences which could be promoted. Four community consultations in Glenisla, Alyth, Blairgowrie and Kirkmichael are seeking local people’s views on what to include, together with their ideas on how it could be developed and how local people and businesses could get involved.

Clare explained: “There are so many possible sites, our challenge will be to limit ourselves to just 15 in this first phase. There are Pictish Stones to excite your curiosity, little-known stories from the legends of King Arthur and the Irish Giant Finn mac Cumhaill, contemporary histories of the Scottish traveller community, important events linked to the great Jacobite rebellions and fables of the Caterans themselves - the Highland clan warriors who came to be associated with cattle-raiding. Then there’s the berry- growing history, the textile mills, Alyth’s well-preserved old town centre, the geology of the Highland Boundary Fault and the huge landscapes of Glenshee and Glenisla sculpted by glaciation and traversed by old drove roads and ancient rights of way.

“What’s really important for us is find out what sites local people would like to see as part of this first phase. Once we’ve identified the sites, we’ll be creating a set of video, audio, photographic and written content around each of them which will then be made publicly available through an app and at the sites themselves and in printed form through local tourism-related businesses, hotels, restaurants and cafes. Alongside this we’ll be putting together a marketing campaign working with all the other amazing cultural tourism organisations in Tayside to promote the Ecomusuem as an unusual and outstanding new cultural destination in the region. Once we’ve got this first stage off the ground, we’ll be looking find more finance to roll out the number of sites, ideally up to 100”.

Alyth Community Council

The Council (ACC) met on Wednesday 10 October 2018 in Alyth Town Hall

The main points of discussion were as follows:

Drumderg Wind Farm Microgrants The ACC can award grants up to the value of £300 to those groups or associations who apply and whose request conforms to the criteria required by the Drumderg Wind Farm. To apply please contact Iain Donaldson (Details below) or any Councillor.

Citizens of the Year; Senior, Junior and Group will be announced after the November Council Meeting.

Traffic Controls; Possible changes to stop traffic speeding, parking and a one-way traffic system were discussed.

Speeding; A 20mph speed limit to be introduced, possibly from Isla Road up to Bamff Road and including side Street off Airlie Street, and others if requested.

Parking; Short term parking in and around the square to be free for 2 hours before a charge being applied. Alyth Hotel residents would be catered for within the agreed system.

One-Way System; There was a proposal that some action was required to minimise the problems which appeared to be occurring at the bottom of Toutie Street and with traffic meeting each other along Commercial Street where there were no passing places. This problem had been increased by the alterations to the road widths caused by the construction of the bridge’s steps and ramps. One possible solution voiced was a one-way system from the road bridge along Commercial Street and up Toutie Street stopping at the beginning of the High Street.

Speed Restriction Ramps; These would not be ‘sleeping policeman’ but raised areas approx. 3m long and could be located on Meigle Road and Meethill Road to minimise speeding.

It was pointed out that before Alyth Residents were asked their opinion about each of these proposals, Perth & Kinross Council would need to confirm that they could be implemented if the majority of Alyth Residents agreed to have them.

Remembrance Day; It was agreed that the ACC would lay a wreath at the War Memorial on Armistice Day.

Area of the Burnside from the telephone boxes to the pack bridge; This development is to be carried out by Alyth in Bloom in coordination with Perth & Kinross Council. The ACC had been informed that no work was planned until substantial funds were in place. A plan for the area was already in place and the design had been carried out using the same or similar materials to that used for the Market square development. The ACC had, in view of the proposed development, contacted SEPA to have that area of the burn adjacent to the works, cleaned out and improved. This will not be a simple operation as SEPA, P&K Council and Scottish National Heritage all have an interest and will need to be involved!

Market Square redevelopment; The ACC have been told that the works are on programme. Two notice Boards will be erected in the square. The large original board will be replaced but using the existing black metal supports This sign board will be looked after by Alyth Development Trust and will contain a new map of Alyth and its surroundings. On the reverse will be details of the shops, locations and other areas of interest. The second, smaller, sign will be provided by the ACC and will show copies of meeting minutes and other important information which may affect the town.

Professor James Hutcheson; The ACC meeting was informed of the death of the Professor who was born and lived the early part of his life in Alyth, The Alyth Community Council believe that the importance of the Professors work in developing the Full Body MRI Scanner which is used throughout the world should be recognised in some way.

Highland Boundary Spirit

Distilling isn’t something Alyth has been previously famous for, but that could be about to change with the launch of Highland Boundary Spirit - a unique new tipple combining the natural flavours of birch buds and elderflowers.

The new drink is the brainchild of local couple Marian Bruce and Simon Montador, who have converted an old milking shed at their Kirklandbank Farm into a modern distilling and blending plant.

The inspiration for Highland Boundary Spirit comes from Scandinavia and Eastern Europe: “We have friends there and have travelled a lot in the area,” explains Marian. “There’s a huge range of traditional spirits and liqueurs made using a much wider variety of botanical ingredients than are used in Scottish distilling. But Scotland has such a wealth of native plants that could be used, so we thought we’d do some research.”

Changes to the licensing laws in 2015 made small-scale distilling much more economically viable and spawned many new craft distilleries in Scotland, mostly producing specialist brands of gin. “We wanted to do something different using plants that are growing native on or near our farm to produce something that is from our environment as it is and is as Scottish as whisky, but caters to a different palate,” said Marian, whose background is in bioscience.

“People are looking for new flavours and new products, and although distilling is a Scottish tradition, this is a thoroughly new modern take on it. We have an amazing environment in Alyth producing pure and clean botanicals, with amazing water that comes off Alyth Hill,” she adds.

“Elderflower has been used in drinks in Scotland for a long time,” said Simon, who comes from a business background, “and we thought its lighter floral flavour would go very well with the more earthy, deep and warming flavours from the birch buds - known as ‘wintergreen’ in the drinks trade.”

The birch buds are harvested in early Spring, the elderflowers in early Summer, and are processed and kept frozen until needed.

“We’re careful to harvest sustainably - only taking small amounts from each tree or bush, just enough for our needs and making sure there will be more to harvest in future years. It has the same effect on the plant as a grazing animal would have,” says Marian.

The couple spent many months experimenting with different balances and strengths of the flavours. Each batch of the finished product takes about a week to make, although the exact method and recipe remain a closely guarded secret.

“The Highland Boundary geological fault runs just north of Alyth, and we thought it would be a good name for our product because it’s a fusion of Highland botanicals and lowland grain,” said Marian.

Highland Boundary Spirit is already available in local bars and restaurants in Perthshire, and now in Edinburgh and Glasgow as well. The couple are in discussions with other outlets, and eventually, hope to export to Europe and maybe further afield. The new business has already created one job in Alyth and hope to create more as it grows. There are also plans to develop other spirits with other natural ingredients harvested from their farm and local countryside.

WALKING SURPRISE !! CONGRATULATIONS We went by bus!! Well, not all the way, but a tour of the Glens was a wonderful start. Not, I hasten to add meant initially, but a wrong turning somewhere took us on this mystery journey.

The scenery was second to none and as we twisted and turned along narrow roads we said that this would do instead of walking, but we eventually arrived at our original destination.

We de-bussed and set off over the Backwater Dam. This was great, the weather was calm and the sun shone on the mountains in the distance making a colourful backdrop to the water that looked like glass.

Two and a half miles later we turned back to the bus.

A five mile walk that passed all too quickly. Congratulations to Alyth Health Centre and all the folks who handed in their used specs. Finella of the park and walk club On behalf of Vision 2020—The Right To Sight Project

The Family Fun Day event seems a long time ago—end September---a very successful day where everyone had fun and almost £1700 was raised towards the project to renovate the burn side. Approximately 90 metres of 20p coins were saved by the folks of Alyth and laid out up Pitnacree Street, almost £900 in 20p‘s, a fabulous effort. Many thanks. Probably the highlight of the afternoon was the duck race. 500 yellow plastic ducks were dropped into the burn, many on to the stones protruding from the very low water level. In jumps Nikki McFarlane with paddle to help them on their way, a struggle against a strong head wind. The winning duck, bought that afternoon by John Donachy of Alyth, took 30 minutes from the top footbridge to the bottom footbridge---hardly a sprint! Alyth in Bloom would like to publicly thank everyone who contributed to the day, the people of Alyth, Alyth Scouts for use of their ducks, Alyth Youth Partnership for collecting the ducks at the end of the race, the “Woodland Elves” for their music, Nikki McFarlane, a director of Alyth Development Trust, Charlie Palmer of Classic Restorations and Jessie McLean for the use of their properties, Iain Donaldson, Chairman of Alyth Community Council for manning the BBQ stall, and Provost Dennis Melloy, who gave of his time to lay the first 20p---a true community effort—many thanks to all. By the time you read this, the Fashion Show, put on by Thrifty One, will have taken place. The proceeds from the evening were split 50/50 between Alyth in Bloom and Airlie Street Hall. Both groups thank Thrifty One for their generosity. More next month. So back to the “day job”! Planters in the Square were moved ahead of the town centre regeneration then all planter and tubs emptied in readiness for the planting of tulips, primulas, pansies to provide a colourful show in spring. 5000 crocuses have been kindly donated by Blairgowrie Rotary and will be planted at the T-junction in early November. More daffodils will also go in. The grass edges at 5- roads roundabout, Meigle Road and the T-junction are being cut as frequently as time allows. We feel a tidy entrance to the town gives a good first impression. We work with Alyth Primary School and 2 or 3 of the group spend an hour each week after school helping the children with gardening projects. Alyth in Bloom has also been working with PKC to renovate and tidy up the WWI&II War Memorial on Meigle Road. A group of 10-12 spent several hours of October 16th cutting back and clearing the beds behind the Memorial—a big improvement but more to be done. Alyth in Bloom have committed to maintaining this area in future. Alyth in Bloom is a small group of people who want to make Alyth an even more attractive place in which to live, work and to visit. We have more ideas than time to carry them out so, if you feel you could lend a hand now and again, please contact us. We are informal and have fun doing what we do. Call us---Karin Donaldson (01828 632479) or Tam Thomson (01828 632036) or contact us on Facebook (www.Facebook.com/alythbloom)

VICTORIAN DAY---December 1st

Some of the Charities that have taken part in the past on this fun day are Perthshire Brass Band, Alyth Scouts, Alyth Parish Church, Alyth Christmas Lights, Alyth Voice, Alyth in Bloom, MS Therapy Centre. It is hoped that representatives of the charities will be in “dress of the period”.

There will be no charge for anyone/group taking part.

We hope you will join us to keep this wonderful tradition alive and well.

To give someone a new hat or scarf when they have never had new clothes brings great joy and laughter. Well done Clare McGowan for taking the lead for this excellent charity.

Thank You

We would like to thank our neighbours, friends and relations for all the cards, flowers, gifts and good wishes received on our Diamond Wedding.

We cannot describe the surprise and delight when we went in to the "wee" party our family had organised for us. Every member of our loving family was there and it was an absolutely fantastic celebration. Our " life in pictures" photobook is a special gift to treasure. Thank you all so much

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Glen Isla Development (So Called).

May I be allowed to request the answer to the following three questions relating to the above development. 1 I notice that the planned Phase One is positioned where, after a good rain fall, a flow of water comes down the hill opposite and then flows across the road and directly into this site. Therefore may I assume that the developer will be making the necessary plans to avoid this problem. 2. Having read the many documents, both legal and advisory, which apply to the roads servicing such a development area I cannot possibly see that the route via Meethill Road will be in any way adequate. Hence I ask what arrangements is the developer making to improve this situation or what other route will be made available. 3. Of a much lesser importance but worthy of comment is the following. Could the Developer please advise us as to the correct plan for phase one. To date I have been able to view three different versions and even the `Alyth Voice` has been given two variations.

This does not bide good for us to respect the Developers intentions.

Dennis Arnold, Alyth, (Just an average Alyth citizen).

To whom it may concern

I posted an article for publication in the Voice which was published in the October edition, No. 239. Omitted from this article were details of the history of the family business going back 100 years. There were only two families involved in the ownership of the “PUB” until 1999, namely Barron and Robertson.

I felt this information would be lost if not recorded in my lifetime. I felt that the younger generation should know some facts about the town and its shops.

TOPIA PUB And this is why Airlie Street Bar is still the only Pub in Alyth. LOSSETT INN ALYTH HOTEL BURNSIDE INN BLACKBIRD INN

I wish the Barclay Family all the best in keeping the Airlie Street Bar thriving as a PUB.

Cally Crafters is 15!

Cally Crafters started back in 2003 for anyone who wanted a place to do their craft and meet up with like-minded people. The membership and crafts have changed and evolved over time but the interest in what people are making and doing stays the same, encouraging, discussing and advising. We knit, stitch, weave, dye, print, quilt; make jewellery, books, paper, interesting things We are traditional, contemporary, experimental We work it out, think it through, design our own, use a pattern, follow instructions, plan ahead, experiment We like to see what others are doing, go to exhibitions, have workshops We are crafters. We also have an annual challenge which gets the creative juices flowing and can come up with some interesting outcomes. This year we were given a dishcloth. You may have seen some of the results in our display in the Alyth Library window in the form of a bright yellow sunflower, a happy clown, cute teddy bear, squishy tortoise and a beautiful Temari ball. If you think this is for you then why not come along. We meet every Thursday, 1.30 to 3.30 in the Bridge of Cally Hall. Your first session is free.

We will be at the Bridge of Cally Craft Fair on November 17th, if you want to come and have a chat, or contact us on 01828 633083 for more details.

Dear Sir Can you please ask our dog walkers (not all) to take home their poo bags and not launch them into hedges, trees or just wherever. We have noticed someone puts them in the same place all the time never to pick them up again. The village and countryside is getting untidy with these foul bags. DOG WALKERS PLEASE TAKE YOUR POO BAGS HOME. Thank You!

ALYTH YOUTH PARTNERSHIP

Despite the autumnal weather, we had a spring in our step as we headed to the new Ryze centre in Dundee for some fun on the trampolines. It was great to see the young people having so much fun, and the certainly got a good work out! The hardest part of the whole process was getting them to stand still for a group photo - in an age when young people spend hours every day taking selfies, it is quite telling that they are not comfortable when it is someone else clicking the button. They eventually gave me the green light to use the pictures to show you all what a great bunch they are!

In the last Voice I said that things were a bit quiet at the Hub in comparison to the other groups, and no sooner had I sent the article than they all came bursting through the door and it wasn’t long before I was reminiscing fondly about those peaceful evenings! There is constant debate about the Hub - it’s not really big enough, but on the other hand the young people really like the location and the cosy atmosphere. Every so often we shift things around to create more space but we are close to the stage of knocking through the wall and joining in with the dominoes at the pub!

The highlight for October has to be the Mobile Foundry. Roddy and the boys gave the young people a really great experience and they all came away with pieces of art to be very proud of. Our guitar group is up and running again and it was fantastic to welcome Gemma back to Alyth as part of our drama partnership with Horsecross Arts. The fruits of their labour will be on show when they feel ready to share their work with the community!

It is getting to that time of year when we hold our AGM. This is planned for December, so please keep a look out for more information. Apart from the formal side of the meeting, which will be kept to a minimum, it will also be a chance for us to celebrate a very successful year and share some of our experiences with the parents and families of our young people. we have a settled committee so there will be no arm twisting to get people on board, just a chance to enjoy a coffee together and make sure we are happy with how things are going! Congratulations to Erin McWilliam who won our junior bowling competition, and to runner up Roxy Milne. Thank you to Fran and Kenny for their expert coaching this season.

Mark Melville from Strathmore Golf Club swung by to present a cheque to the AYP kids, helping us continue to provide lots of fun activities!

Independent Medical & Training Solutions

One of Alyth’s newest businesses is now offering industry-standard and fully accredited training in first aid, fire safety, security and a range of other specialisms right across the UK. Independent Medical & Training Solutions Ltd (IMTS) established its base on Airlie Street earlier this year, and is already attracting clients from all over the country. Company owner Carolyn Simm explains: “Our aim is to deliver the highest standard of training within the first-response emergency care, first aid, health and safety, fire safety and care industries across the UK. All our instructors have front-line teaching and mentoring experience. “Our training is designed to enhance any organisation and deliver the knowledge and skills that can enable any individual to perform their duties in their given sector to the best of their ability and to the highest quality care standards.” Carolyn has more than 20 years of experience in recruitment and training, and now has a bank of highly qualified trainers on call who can deliver courses at the client’s own premises or in pubic venues as required. The courses can be delivered in small groups of half a dozen upwards. “Organisations today have to be much more aware of health and safety and some, such as care homes, have to have properly trained people capable of dealing with emergencies,” she says. “There’s also a growing demand from individuals keen to learn, for example, first-aid skills that could hep save lives in rural areas where emergency services might take time to arrive.” IMTS’s courses are strongly oriented towards helping people learn not only practical skills but more importantly the confidence to apply those skills in any situation. All their courses meet recommendations underlined by the Health & Safety Executive and IMTS is a registered centre with Qualsafe, one of the UK’s largest qualification-awarding organisations as recognised by the Government’s qualifications watchdog Ofqual. This enables IMTS to award official certificates to everyone completing one of its courses. Carolyn adds: “We’re always ready to have a chat with people to find out exactly what they want or need, and tailor our training to that as much as possible.” See advert on page below or visit IMTS’s website: https://www.independentmedicalsolutions.com

Drivers urgently needed!

For Alyth and District Patient Transport Service Registered Charity No. SC047210

All that is required is a few hours of your time each month to take local people to hospital and clinic appointments using your own car. You will receive expenses to cover your costs. There are many proven benefits to volunteering for both the volunteer and those who benefit from the service. This is what our own Samaritan Car drivers have told us: George: I had just retired and moved to the area. I felt joining would get me closer to the community. Most of the people I drive to appointments would find it difficult to make the journey on their own. Over the years I have enjoyed listening to their tales of Old Alyth and their families. I have become friends with most and thoroughly enjoy my day with them. Morag: I wanted to do some volunteer work in Alyth, my adoptive home, and I felt the Samaritan car service was a very necessary and worthwhile service for the community. I enjoy meeting the many people who use the service, when we cover many different topics of conversation. I feel now that I have become friends with many of the patients. All the patients are most appreciative of the service provided and comment that, without it, they would find it very difficult to get to the hospitals to keep their appointments. Peter: My reasons for joining were really two-fold : (1) to establish new friends and contacts and (2) to put something back into the community. I have to say I learned more about the history and various 'goings-on' in Alyth from the variety of elderly patients (mainly female it must be said) whom I had the pleasure of transporting and conversing with over the last 10 years than I would have managed if left to my own resources. Moreover it very soon became apparent how much our service is appreciated by all the individuals we help out, which has helped justify my second reason above James: I joined as it kept my interest in driving a wee bit alive. This is an essential service as far as I am concerned. The patients I transport, with no exception, appreciate the ease in getting to where they wish to be, accompanied by a friendly face! Being a volunteer driver can suit retired people, those working part-time, homemakers or any local person over 21 with time during the day to spare, who would like to help us keep this vital service going. Please consider signing up! For more information or to join up contact Liz Gordon, Co-ordinator (01828 633554) or Marion Duffy Secretary/Treasurer (07742 305101).

Thrifty One From the Community, For the Community

Opening times: 10am—4pm Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday Phone: Anne 07592 338449.(speak or leave a message) Facebook message on our page: Thrifty One Email: [email protected]

For those of you who use social media , you can find us as Thrifty One. Please like & share us with your friends. The more folk who know about us, the more funds we can raise. Thanks!

Well the nights are fair drawing in. My body clock is still in summer mode, so the dark evenings are having the effect of causing me to look longingly up the stairs to my bed.... and its only 7.30pm!! However to business, and this November’s newsletter.

Coffee Morning An enormous and hugely grateful Thank you to all of you that baked helped and came to the MacMillan Coffee Morning at the end of last month. In case there is anyone that hasn’t heard, an amazing £555 was raised during the day. It consisted of a combination of coffee morning donations, the raffle, ‘name the doll’ and shop takings for the day. We literally had folk queuing in the aisles during the morning! As in previous years the day went with a swing and many a giggle. Isabel was Queen of the coffee pot and kept us all in line. Though, as you can see from the photo, she did let her hair down as the day quietened. We were treated to a ‘visitation’ from the Julie Walters waitress causing much hilarity all round.

Anne’s ankle You will be pleased to hear that Anne’s ankle has healed well. We have to make sure she puts it up occasionally and all flip flops have been removed from her wardrobe. Sensible ankle boots are the required footwear, any variation and the Thrifty One volunteers give her a right talking to!

Excess donations As you all know despite our best efforts we do not have the space to sell all the lovely donations that you give us. Since early summer we have established a collaboration with Bric Plus, a side shoot of the Blythswood Charity. They buy our surplus books, dvds, cds and bric a brac and move them onto other outlets. This ties in nicely with our aim to re-use and recycle as much as is possible while also making some money for Thrifty One in the process. We continue to take extra clothes through to Cash for Clothes in Dundee. In the meantime we love how folk are beginning to come to Thrifty One before heading off to the ‘buy new’ shops! In our times of climate change it makes sense to buy ‘previously used’ items wherever possible. Not to mention it’s much more fun!

WOULD YOU LIKE TO TRAIN AS A LAYOUT ARTIST FOR THE VOICE?

As you know the Voice is produced and delivered solely by volunteers. Every month we happily dedicate our time to publishing the best newsletter we can for our readers. However as dedicated as we are some of us need to have a month off here and there to meet life’s other commitments.* We have various roles available!! * We are urgently looking to train a Deputy Layout Artist who can take the helm a few months of the year and/or in an emergency. The layout of the Voice takes on average about 10-12 hours each month from the 14th to 23rd, and has a standard template. There is no re-design required just fill in the blanks! It would really help if you have experience with Microsoft applications (Word, PowerPoint etc). The software we use to layout the Voice is MS Publisher and it would be an advantage if you already have some basic knowledge using it but its not essential. Whether you’re a student with some free time and would like some volunteering on your CV or are semi-retired with some spare time, we’d love to hear from you and we’ll teach you what you need to know to feel confident.

SCOUTS

The march of time is relentless, and this has been confirmed with our latest “acquisition”, which is a computer record system. Now the main danger in this foray into cyber-space is this operative, so be warned! To be fair we have been using a version of this for two years, but we have now upgraded to an all singing, all dancing version which, in theory will improve our communications and involvement with the community. We will manage to send out a link to all parents, who will be able to access their own records and update them as appropriate. In addition, they will have access to a summary of the programme and a notice board to see what is coming up. We are acutely aware that we must not have the tail wagging the dog, and the whole object of the exercise is to improve their Scouting experience, not get bogged down with technology to the point where we spend more time on the system than providing Scouting. One issue might be that emails we send might go into your junk box, so I will let individuals know if I have sent an email and it has been delivered but not opened (clever stuff!) We hope to have this up and running for January 2019, so the clock is ticking. One suggestion is to have a short parent’s meeting one Friday Night toward the end of a meeting. It won’t take me long to go over what I know, and it will definitely not be too technical – I don’t know how it works, just what it does! Let me know if this would be a help and I can set this up one evening

We are currently setting up a cycle day and one of the requirements is a knowledge of map reading. Again, technology can help, but everyone agrees that basic skills are fundamental. Toward this end, the Scouts were given a series of ploys to undertake which required these skills to be put into action. As far as we are aware everyone completed the tasks – at least they all made it back to the hut safe and sound, so that has to count for something! This endeavour would not have been possible without the guidance and supervision of our leadership team and I am indebted to my fellow Leaders and our Young Leaders who carried this out. It’s one thing knowing the theory, but another thing when it comes to carrying it out !! We have not been very pictorial this month so I have attached some photos from recent events. I must learn how to download photos from my smart phone – but that’s another project

Notes from Alyth Musical Society A few of my favourite things.

We have been overwhelmed (in a good way) by the turnout for rehearsals for 2019’s production of “The Sound of Music”. In addition to a very enthusiastic number of children and young people there a quite few new adults keen to join the ranks of Alyth Musical Society.

As a not for profit organisation we very much appreciate the ongoing support of the Alyth community and ask that you join us at our coffee morning in The Airlie Street Hall on Saturday 10th November.

In addition, we will be hosting a “Snowman Drive” after the Christmas lights switch on 1st December. Hope to see you there!

Alyth Junior Secondary Reunion 1960/2018

“Eleven ‘girls’ and one ‘boy’ attended a class reunion at the Lands of Loyal hotel and were delighted to have Mr & Mrs Bullions and Dorothy spend time with them as stories were shared, including possibly mis-remembered ones! Hopefully we will hold another reunion next year as several old girls & boys sent their best wishes but were unable to attend.”

Alyth Senior Citizens Lunch and Socialising Club achieve the Volunteer Friendly Award for the 3rd time

For over 6 years Alyth Senior Citizens Lunch & Socialising Club has retained its Volunteer Friendly Award, making it the first group in Perth and Kinross to be accredited with the award for the 3rd time.

In Perth and Kinross 12 groups have achieved the Volunteer Friendly Award; a simple, user-friendly quality standard to support, recognise and reward groups who are good at involving volunteers. The award was presented to Alyth Senior Citizens Lunch & Socialising Club at its last lunch gathering on 24th September. Dennis Melloy, Provost of Perth & Kinross, presented the Award which was received by Chairman Peter Fairgrieve. Sue Kermath, ASL&SC member and volunteer, commented on the experience of taking part in the award “Through doing the Volunteer Friendly Award our group has been able to ensure we stay focussed on having our policies and processes in order to make volunteering with us a good experience. The support from PKAVS helped us review and develop our practice which is very important to us; we are run by volunteers and nothing Dennis Melloy, Provost for Perth and would happen without the good will and commitment of our volunteers.” Kinross, presenting the Volunteer Friendly Plaque to Peter Fairgrieve, Chair of Alyth Volunteer Friendly helps take a systematic look at what groups do and how they do SC Lunch and Socialising Club. it. It allows your group to work at its own pace, with full support from your local Third Sector Interface. It can help groups; review and improve practice, show a commitment to providing volunteers with a good experience, recognise the difference volunteers make to an organisation, shows funders commitment to good practice and involving the community.

The Volunteer Friendly Awards, once achieved, lasts for 3 years. Groups may also find the framework for Volunteer Friendly a good tool for reviewing volunteer inclusion and developing practice generally.

Interview with: Jonathan Mitchell by Kevin Coe

One of the more visible elements at this year’s Alyth Creates and more recently at the Alyth in Bloom fund- raising event, was the lively music provided by The Woodland Elves, one half of whom is talented local artist Jonathan Mitchell.

Jonathan was born in Dundee, although his parents came from the south of England. His father was evacuated from London to Blairgowrie during the war with his mother, brother and sister, although they returned to London while the Blitz was still on. “My family originally came from Glen Clova and the north east, so after the war they all moved back to Scotland. I have cousins in Blair and I notice there are several Mitchells in Alyth cemetery. There’s even a connection way back to the family of Robert Burns.”

Jonathan went to Park Place Primary and Grove Academy in Dundee, then to Dundee College of Commerce and later Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art to study Fine Art.

“I’d always wanted to be an artist since I was a little boy. One day my Dad got me a box of oil paints and a board and it just grew from there. I’ve always loved the outdoors and the Scottish countryside, so naturally I’ve painted landscapes all my life.”

After graduating in 1990, Jonathan lived in and began selling his work through Eduardo Alessandro Studios in Dundee.

“In the early days,” he recalls, “I tried to improve my pecuniary circumstances by taking a job as a life model at Angus College. But I must have been mildly traumatised by the experience; one night I dreamed I was about to start a session with the class. But instead of closing the changing-room door behind me, in real life I was actually closing the door to my flat, locking myself out in a state of complete undress! “

“Desperate attempts to regain entry to the house ensued and the episode culminated with me cycling naked through the streets of Arbroath in pursuit of the spare key which was kept at an address a mile or so away. My 15 minutes of fame during my stay in chilly Arbroath!”

In 1993, he moved to Emma Street in Blairgowrie and secured a big commission to paint the Open golf courses for Matthew Gloag & Son.

“This was a big deal.” he says. “Prints of my work were going all over the world, which was a terrific feeling - the first time I actually felt as if I had a career as an artist.”

In 2002 he was offered a house at Afflochie, in the hills between Kirriemuir and . “It was the archetypal artist’s retreat - way up on a hillside accessible only by a dirt track and probably one of the coldest houses in Scotland! But having lived in towns all my life I loved the isolation, even to the extent of getting rid of my car and cycling everywhere - involving 20-mile round trips to the nearest shop”.

“It was a great way of life and I spent a lot of time painting. However, after nearly eight years of being so completely cut off it began to get to me. I found myself being drawn to Glasgow and London to paint bustling city scenes as a counterbalance to the isolation of rural life”.

So, in 2010 Jonathan moved to Kirriemuir and continued to develop his skills as an artist, as well as the business side of things, most notably a commission for Sir Jackie Stewart. He might be there still had not love intervened when he met fellow artist Lesley Garside and they moved in together in Alyth early this year.

“Alyth is ideal for me,” he says. “It’s so easy to get out into the country - over Alyth Hill and the Highland Boundary Fault into the Highlands, or out into the farmland and woods of Strathmore. And even though I’ve known and visited Alyth for many years, I’m really finding out now just how picturesque a town it is.

38

“I’ve been quite inspired since I moved here and I`ve produced a good number of paintings of everyday Alyth views that I hadn`t noticed on previous visits.

“I tend to be what they call a ‘digger’ - focusing on one area and exploring every nook and cranny, rather than ranging over lots of different areas. That’s why almost all my landscapes are Scottish, though I have been travelling to France in recent years to paint.” He works mainly from photographs which he takes on location and brings back to his studio as reference materials.

Jonathan’s work features in art galleries throughout the U.K. but these days more and more sales are coming from word of mouth and via the internet. He’s a regular participant in Perthshire Open Studios and Alyth Creates: “Events like these are making art much more accessible than before, which is great!” he says.

When he’s not painting, Jonathan likes to unwind with his music. “It’s a hobby, but one I take seriously,” he says. He plays percussion, flute and guitar, and has recorded “Bonfirenight”, a CD of his own compositions ranging from traditional-sounding tunes to more abstract musical soundscapes. This year he teamed up with fellow musician Gavin Gowans to form The Woodland Elves, a project combining electronic dance music with acoustically played percussion.

“It’s great to have other creative projects on the go to give a break from the pictures,” he says, “but painting the Scottish landscape will always be my first love.”

You can see examples of Jonathan’s work on his website at www.jonathanmitchellartworks.com, and keep up with him via Facebook at www.facebook.com/jonathanmitchellartworks/
