BT INFOGRAPHICS GE2015 Parties to the fray As many as 10 political parties are expected to take part in Singapore’s 15th General Election, the highest number in Singapore’s history. The ruling People’s Action Party will contest all 89 available seats, while nine opposition parties have staked their claims to the various constituencies. Two parties – Singaporeans First and the People’s Power Party – are taking part in a GE for the very first time. Here’s a quick look at the 10 parties and the key people at the helm. By Lee U-Wen 1) People’s Action Party (PAP) Founded: Nov 21, 1954 Secretary-General: Lee Hsien Loong Chairman: Khaw Boon Wan Number of MPs: 80 (all elected) Did you know? The first election that the PAP contested was the 1955 Legislative Assembly GE, where it won three of the four seats it contested. 2) Workers’ Party (WP) Founded: Nov 3, 1957 Secretary-General: Low Thia Khiang Chairman: Sylvia Lim Number of MPs: 9 (7 elected, 2 non-constituency) Did you know? The WP was founded by Singapore's first chief minister and lawyer David Marshall. 3) Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Founded: March 16, 1973 Secretary-General: Benjamin Pwee Chairman: Mohamad Hamim bin Aliyas Did you know? The DPP was first known as the United Front when it was born in 1973. It was renamed the DPP in 1990. 4) Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) Founded: Aug 6, 1980 Secretary-General: Chee Soon Juan Chairman: Jeffrey George Did you know? The SDP‘s best performance at a GE was in 1991 when it was victorious in three seats – Potong Pasir, Bukit Gombak and Nee Soon Central. 5) National Solidarity Party (NSP) Founded: March 6, 1987 President: Sebastian Teo Did you know? At just 24 years of age, former NSP member Nicole Seah was the youngest female candidate at the 2011 GE. 6) Singapore People’s Party (SPP) Founded: Nov 21, 1994 Secretary-General: Chiam See Tong Chairman: Lina Chiam Number of MPs: 1 (non-constituency) Did you know? Chiam See Tong is the longest-serving opposition MP. He represented Potong Pasir from 1984 to 2011. 7) Singapore Democratic Alliance (SDA) Founded: June 28, 2001 Secretary-General: Desmond Lim Did you know? The SDA was initially an alliance of four parties – SPP, NSP, Singapore Justice Party, and the Singapore Malay National Organisation. 8) Reform Party (RP) Founded: July 3, 2008 Secretary-General: Kenneth Jeyaretnam Chairman: Andy Zhu Did you know? RP was founded by Kenneth Jeyaretnam's father, the late JB Jeyaretnam 9) Singaporeans First (SingFirst) Founded: Aug 19, 2014 Secretary-General: Tan Jee Say Chairman: Ang Yong Guan Did you know? Tan Jee Say was one of four candidates at the 2011 Presidential Election. All of them had the same surname – Tan. 10) People’s Power Party (PPP) Founded: July 16, 2015 Secretary-General: Goh Meng Seng Did you know?
