SAANZ Auckland Sport Aviator March 2018 3 President’s Report

Hi All

Hope you are all well and for those travelling to Wanaka have a safe and fun trip. Remember to check the supplements etc for arrival procedure as I am sure you all have.

We had a great fly-in at Hawera thanks to Peter and Gloria Nunn, what a fantastic effort.

Chapter Member Rob Fry has successfully flown his C180 ZK-FRY after a total rebuild, congratulations it looks and sounds fantastic.

I’m away Thursday night but will leave you in the capable hands of one of our committee members and Peter Jackson is going to speak on topdressing with Tiger moths.

My DR107 wing is complete and I have primed it. Final painting won’t happen until I paint the fuselage. Looking forward to moving away from sanding.

Fuel tanks next along with painting and balancing the ailerons and then time to start bolting things onto the fuselage for good.

Anyway, enjoy the meeting

Thanks

David

The mystery aircraft for February was a Boeing YL-15 or Scout and was provided by Sadly, the SAANZ Keith Weale. Both Steve Stride and Chris SportAvex fly-in at Grove identified the aircraft. Waipukurau had to be cancelled due to the weather forecast being so poor. The forecast turned out to be pretty much spot on with high winds, low cloud and heavy rain moving through the Hawkes Bay region on the Thursday, Friday and only clearing up around midday on the Saturday so the decision to cancel was definitely the right one. Fortunately however, Pete and Gloria Nunn from New Plymouth stepped in to save the day, and at very short notice organised an alternate fly-in at Hawera airfield instead. The weather in Hawera turned out to be brilliant over the weekend and around forty aircraft attended the fly-in. Chris Wade – First Solo

By Gavin Magill

Congratulations to Chris Wade on achieving his first solo at Mercer airfield on Thursday 22nd of March. Chris is learning to fly with Jim Lyver at Mercer to gain his Microlight licence, so he can eventually start flying Sonex JQP which he has been a syndicate member of for over five years. Chris called me on the Friday to say he had soloed after about 8 hours in the Foxbat and

was very happy. He had wanted to solo while he was still 70 and achieved this with just one SAANZ NEWS week to spare. SAANZ Council for 2018 I am sure everyone will join me in congratulating Chris on his achievement. MEMBER UPATE Perhaps we were not quite that far off shore and there was still a bit of turbulence so Turbulence that rule would seem to have merit. By Jon Farmer Rob Trevalis flew up and down the Kaikoura Saturday the 17th Peter Beer and I set off coast a number of times and he reckoned for the annual Mata fly-in, just South of that with an off-shore wind the least Whangarei. turbulence was when tucked right in at the foot of the cliffs and he didn't mean the shore line or even the road but over the railway which is between the road and the foot of the cliffs. He still remembers meeting a Bristol Freighter doing the same thing in the opposite direction!!!! The late Brian Knights was not close to the cliffs, not a long way out to sea and not very high when a down draft forced him into the sea. On the way back from Ashburton Evan tried tucking in close to the base of the cliffs but we realised we were not that close when David's RV shot past between us and the cliffs!!!! We would have gone up the East Coast as there was a light Easterly blowing, but the Wouldn't it be great to have some positive Hunua’s were obscured by rain whereas the information on the form of the turbulence - West coast was sunny. By the time we maybe a smoke generator monitored with a reached the coast the wind had picked up couple of movie cameras. We decided to go thoughts if they are polite !!! further off shore and eventually, a mile or so off shore, we found relatively calm air. It was interesting to note that we could 'read' the sea surface where the turbulence ended. There is a rule of thumb that turbulence extends about 10 times the height of the object causing the turbulence downwind from it. This means that, if the cliffs were 2,500ft, we would have been clear of the turbulence about 4 miles out to sea.
