He said the theme for this year's National Science Day, which is, ‗Science for Society and Society for Science‘ is very relevant. Congratulating the award winners, the Prime Minister said that science, technology and innovation should relate to the aspirations and requirements of the society and try to find solutions for local problems. -

CDRI AWARDS for Excellence in Drug Research 2021 Invitation for Nominations / Applications Instituted by the CSIR-Central Drug Research Institute, Lucknow – 226 031 CDRI AWARDS for Excellence in Drug Research Preamble The CSIR-Central Drug Research Institute (CDRI), Lucknow, was seventh in the chain of CSIR labs that were established in India right after independence India with an aim for technological independence of the Nation. CSIR-CDRI was broadly mandated with the task to revolutionise the pharmaceutical sector, which was almost non-existent at that time for accessibility and affordability of drugs. Today, CSIR-CDRI has evolved into a unique institution possessing end-to-end expertise in the domain of new drug development –its human resource and infrastructure today is second to none. Besides being the breeding ground of huge highly trained human resource for the drug development and manufacturing, out of 20 new drugs discovered, developed and approved in the post-independent India, 11 (8 synthetic + 3 phytopharmaceuticals) are contributions of CSIR-CDRI, Lucknow. These include Centchroman, Arteether, Centbucridine, Gugulipid, Bacosides Enriched Standardized Extract of Bacopa, etc. Centchroman (Ormeloxifene), a non-steroidal contraceptive with almost no toxicity, is now part of the National Family Program, whereas α-β Arteether (antimalarial) is included in the National Malaria Program. However, from the National front, new drug discovery and development is still in its infancy in India. India is a leader in global generic pharmaceuticals manufacturing and is being called as Pharmacy of the developing world, however, many generics manufactured in India are at the end of their respective product life cycles. -

PM confers Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prizes for S&T 01 March 2019 | News | By Manbeena Chawla The Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar (SSB) Prize for Science and Technology was instituted in the year 1957. Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently conferred Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar (SSB) prizes for the years 2016, 2017 and 2018 in New Delhi. The SSB prize is awarded each year on the basis of conspicuously important and outstanding contributions to human knowledge and progress, made through work done primarily in India during the five years, preceding the year of the prize. The SSB prize, comprising a citation, a cash award of Five Lakh rupees and a plaque is given to each person selected for the award in the following disciplines viz. Biological sciences, Chemical Sciences, Medical Sciences, Physical Sciences, Mathematical Sciences, Engineering Sciences and Earth, Atmosphere, Ocean and Planetary Science. The Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar (SSB) Prize for Science and Technology was instituted in the year 1957, in the memory of late Dr (Sir) Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar, the founder director of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research(CSIR). Any citizen of India engaged in research in any field of science and technology up to the age of 45 years is eligible to be nominated. Through a genome-wide study of chromatin- associated proteins in Drosophila cells, five major chromatin types were identified as a refinement of the traditional binary division into hetero- and euchromatin. -

Page 1/29 Abstract Drought and salinity are major environmental stresses which affect crop productivity and therefore are major hindrance in feeding growing population world-wide. Calcium (Ca2+) signalling plays a crucial role during the plant's response to these stress stimuli. Calmodulin (CaM), a crucial Ca2+sensor, is involved in transducing the signal downstream in various physiological, developmental and stress responses by modulating a plethora of target proteins. The role of CaM has been well established in the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana for regulating various developmental processes, stress signalling and ion transport. -

In ihren Forschungsberichten geben die Fachbereiche einen Überblick über die Forschungsaktivitäten des vergangenen Jahres 2016, über abgeschlossene Dissertations- und Habilitationsverfahren, über Publikationen, Auszeichnungen und Preise sowie nationale wie internationale Projekte, kurzum: über alles, was Forschung an der WWU auszeichnet. Dabei decken diese Aktivitäten ein breites Spektrum an Themen und Inhalten ab. So setzt sich das innovative Graduiertenkolleg EvoPAD („Evolutionary Processes in Adaptation and Disease”) aus geistes- und naturwissenschaftlicher Perspektive damit auseinander, wie und warum Krankheiten entstehen und welche Rolle evolutionäre Anpassungen dabei spielen. Während der SFB TRR 170 hingegen in höheren Sphären schwebt und unter anderem die Entwicklung der Erde und ihres Mondes ergründet, setzen sich gleich mehrere Projekte mit dem Thema der Digitalen Gesellschaft auseinander, beispielhaft auch aus genderspezifischer Sichtweise (z.B. EQUAL-IST oder Digital Me). Dies sind aber nur einige wenige Beispiele - die in diesem Bericht zusammengetragenen Daten zeigen die Vielfältigkeit aller Forschungsaktivitäten, die die WWU nicht nur bundesweit, sondern international sichtbar macht. -
