We cannot ensure that our institu- tions reflect the ideals of equality, fairness, and equal opportunity which are part of our culture without affirmative action.' [Gay and lesbian people] don't need affirmative2 action-we're already here. We need the freedom to be visible. On the surface, this may seem a relatively simple question, but my work takes a broad perspective, approaching this single question from a multitude of perspectives. To do so I carried out a combination of experiments, interpreting the results through the Attention Weighted Schema Abstraction model that I developed. Following the introduction Chapter 2 lays out the AWSA model in the context of previous literature on stereotype conception and speech and sexuality. Chapter 3 presents the production experiment, which recorded speakers reading a series of single words and sentences and interviews discussing stereotypes of sexuality. Phonetic analysis showed that though speech did not vary categorically by sexual orientation, familiarity with Queer culture played a significant role in variation of speech rate and mean pitch. This pattern was only seen for straight and bisexual speakers, suggesting that lesbian stereotypes are used to present an affinity with Queer culture, which was further supported by the decrease or loss of their significance in interview speech. -

The words we use, and how we use them, can be very powerful. Knowing and understanding the meaning of the words we use improves communication and helps prevent misunderstandings. The following terms are not absolutely-defined. Rather, they provide a starting point for conversations. As always, listening is the key to understanding. Every thorough discussion about the queer community starts with terminology. Some of this terminology may be confusing or surprising; please do not hesitate to ask for clarification. Aravindh, Ph.D. Scholar ======================================================================= This paper describes some of the healthcare needs of transgender people before hormone replacement therapy. Gender identity is one of the most important concerns of human psychology. Sexual identity causes big humiliation for transgenders. They need steady help and support from the health care centers. The situation still gets worst when they do not get sufficient support from their own kin, as well as society. “In a survey, 28 percent of participants (transgender people) reported postponing medical care due to discrimination from their health care providers, while 19 percent reported being refused medical care completely” (Breeding Zachari). Lack of knowledge about the gender identity disorder and absence of defined conventions in the society may be the major attributes for this problem. Transgender people are already in a constant inner conflict between soul and body. This conflict with the society leads to hampered communications and miscellaneous relationships within family, friends and colleagues. Transgender people are often rejected by their parents, peers, and marginalised in the society. They are frequently not engaged in necessary mental and physical health care due to barriers arising from both their gender minority status and the barriers associated with homelessness. In order to improve transgender individuals’ health, a rightly dosage of food is must. It is important to understand the conditions for which this population is most at risk, the role of food during the hormone therapy. -

Many studies have investigated cross-sex friendships without taking into account the sexual identity of the participants (Buhrke & Fuqua, 1987; Fehr, 1996; Gaines, 1994; Monsour, 1992; O’Meara, 1989; Parker & de Vries, 1993; Reid & Fine, 1992; Rubin, 1985; Sapadin, 1988; Swain, 1992, Werking, 1997) and therefore draw conclusions about cross-sex friendships and negotiation of sexual boundaries (O’Meara, 1989; Reid and Fine, 1992; Swain, 1992).
