    Cardinal discusses use of slave labor during WWII MAINZ, Germany – A German cardinal said a report detailing how the church used slave laborers during World War II was an “important building block” for reconciliation. “The church’s memory was blind for too long to the fate and sorrows of men, women, youngsters and children who were brought from all over Europe as slave laborers to Germany,” said Cardinal Karl Lehmann of Mainz, former president of the German bishops’ conference. “This documentation, scientifically examining a forgotten chapter of contemporary church history, cannot and should not be understood as a final reckoning. “It is rather an important building block on the way to a future of reconciliation for the Christians of Germany and Europe,” said the cardinal. After eight years of research by a special commission, the 703-page report called “The Catholic Church and Forced Labor 1939-1945” was presented in Mainz April 8. Karl-Joseph Hummel and Christoph Koesters headed the commission of historians that prepared the report. Approximately 8.43 million civil workers and 4.57 million prisoners of war were sent to work for farms, factories, heavy industry and prison camps in the German Reich. The workers were mostly from occupied territories in Eastern Europe. About half the Catholic Church’s schools, hospitals, convents, abbeys and charitable institutions were confiscated by the German government during the war, the report said. But more than 4,800 civil laborers and nearly 1,100 prisoners of war – mostly from Poland, Ukraine and Russia – were put to work at more than 770 Catholic institutions, such as farms or cemeteries, that remained in church hands.

Karl Lehmann war der Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg auf vielfache Weise verbunden. Geboren 1936 im hohenzollerischen Sigmaringen in einer Lehrerfamilie hat er die schwierigen Lebensverhältnisse der Kriegs- und Nachkriegszeit als Kind und Jugendlicher erfahren. Schon die Möglichkeit, das Gymnasium zu besuchen, forderte den Eltern erhebliche Anstrengungen ab. Die Entscheidung für ein Theologiestudium in Freiburg 1956 war nicht selbstverständlich. It is important that children and young people, especially if they are Christians, grow up with a mentality that is open to meeting every person, learning to recognize one another as a brother or sister. This is the way we become apostles of peace. I tell you and all the young people of Italy, beginning with those of ACR: the Church is counting on you, so that humanity will no longer experience the aberrations of racial, ethnic and religious hatred. In this connection, how can we forget that "Memorial Day" was celebrated yesterday in Italy, a day instituted precisely in order not to forget the horrors of the Shoah and of every other human aberration caused by the rejection of dialogue between different cultures and religions.     GEORG EVERS TRENDS AND DEVELOPMENTS IN INTERRELIGIOUS DIALOGUE General Remarks This article will again explore the state of interreligious interactions and dialogue during the past year. It is a vast area to survey, because there are so many activi- ties and events in which religions play a role and that are expressions of a con- tinuous interest in promoting the cause of religious cooperation in battling the many problems of today’s world. In general it can be said that the number of interreligious conferences and encounters has been constantly increasing in recent years. But this numerical growth does not automatically imply that mutual unders- tanding of the religious traditions other than one’s own has increased at the same rate. Only too often “experts” in interreligious dialogue and official representa- tives of religious organizations meet in closed circles. Cardinal Jean Tauran, President of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue, lamented the fact that the results of important conferences on interreligious dialogue do not reach ordinary believers. He made this statement at the close of the Christian-Muslim encounter in the Vatican in February 2009. In a similar way, the Jesuit Christian Troll, expert in Islam and counsellor to the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue, deplored that the results of important meetings between Christian and Muslim representatives in the Vatican and Egypt in the last two years are not known to Christian and Muslim students in seminaries or Muslim training centres (madrassah). To remedy this situation topics and activities in the field of interreli- gious dialogue should deal more with issues relevant to the actual problems of our times.

A Complex History between Christians and Jews The history of relations between Christians and Jews represents a very complex history which alternates between proximity and distance, between fraternity and estrangement, between love and hate. This history can be designated as complex from its very beginnings. On the one hand, Jesus cannot be understood without Judaism; the early Christian congregation quite naturally participated in the Jewish liturgy in the temple, and Paul too on his various mission journeys al- ways went to the synagogues first before turning to the Gentiles with his proclamation of the gospel. On the other hand, the schism between synagogue and church forms the first split in the history of the church, which the Catholic theologian Erich Przywara defined as the “primal rift.”1 Even though contemporary research tends to accept that the process of estrangement and dis- sociation between Judaism and Christianity extended over a longer period than previously assumed and surely only gradually took shape during the second century after the destruction of the Second Temple in 70 AD,2 there is nevertheless no question that this process was set in place at the very beginning of Jewish-Christian relations and the relationship between Jews and Christians was marked by conflict already at an early stage. Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger outlined that conflict in these words: “The church was regarded by her mother as an unnatural daughter, while the Christians regarded the mother as blind and obstinate.”3 While this image reminds us that the conflicts between Jews and Christians were still like family quarrels, the relationship be- tween Jews and Christians deteriorated progressively as the awareness of belonging to the same family was gradually lost.

    Theological Studies 57 (1996) CURRENT THEOLOGY NOTES ON MORAL THEOLOGY 1995 PASTORAL CARE OF THE DIVORCED AND REMARRIED On July 10, 1993, the three bishops of the ecclesiastical province of the Upper Rhine in Germany issued a pastoral letter calling for in­ creased dialogue with divorced and remarried Catholics. It was read in all the churches of the three dioceses in September that year. The letter stated that a pastoral dialogue was needed to determine whether the "generally valid" prohibition against the remarried receiving the Eucharist "applies also in a given situation."1 The German letter was noteworthy for several reasons, not least being the reputation of the three ordinaries who signed it. Walter Kasper of Rottenburg-Stuttgart is a theological scholar of international repute, Karl Lehmann of Mainz, also a distinguished theologian, is president of the German episcopal conference, and Archbishop Oskar Saier of Freiburg, a canon lawyer, is vice-president of the conference. On October 14,1994, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF) sent a letter to the worldwide episcopacy entitled "Concerning the Reception of Holy Communion by Divorced-and-Remarried Mem­ bers of the Faithful."2 Written after a series of meetings between the German bishops and Cardinal Ratzinger, head of the CDF, the curial letter reaffirmed the traditional ban on reception of the Eucharist for those living in irregular unions. The three German prelates responded to the CDF letter with a public message to the people of their dioceses in which they noted that in regard to their position and that of the CDF "we do not find ourselves in any doctrinal disagreement," but "the difference has to do with the question of pastoral practice in individual cases." The bishops maintained that there does "exist room, beneath the threshold of the binding teaching, for pastoral flexibility in com­ plex individual cases that is to be used responsibly."3 This extraordinary series of public statements by the CDF and mem­ bers of the German episcopacy raises a number of issues.

For Europe, the 21st century began at the Gdansk Lenin Shipyard; for Germany, the present began when the Wall came down at the Brandenburg Gate. When Pope John Paul II stepped through this gate in 1996, it was not an easy step to take. Peace and reconciliation require strength and self-denial, especially where Poland and Germany are concerned. However, the way is paved, and it is no longer possible to miss the goal: In June, the German-Polish treaty of friendship celebrates its 15th anniversary. In 2007, the German-Polish- Danish corps will assume the leadership of the ISAF in Afghanistan. The German-Polish Youth Organization has logged almost 1.5 million participants in exchange programmes. Germany is Poland’s most important trade partner; Poland, in turn, ranks tenth on the importance scale in Germany. In a few days, the German Pope will visit Warsaw, even before he goes to Berlin. After Hitler, Auschwitz, and the expulsion of millions of Poles and Germans from their homes, a reconciliation seemed impossible for a long time. However, there were those who hoped against all hope. According to Cardinal Karl Lehmann, Christians especially became the ,avant-garde of reconciliation‘, who made ,belonging to the same church‘ their watchword: In 1957, the Berlin head of the Caritas, Prelate Zinke, and Bishop Boleslaw Kominek exchanged their first letters.
