The coordinates represent the central point of the Marrón-Hayes Adobe, the extant building of the historic district. These coordinates were obtained on July 1, 2014, using Google Earth’s GPS mapping grade unit. The coordinates’ datum is North American Datum 1983. Shelley Hayes Caron Residence The Marrón-Hayes Adobes Historic District is comprised of the extant Marrón- Hayes Adobe (ca. 1854, altered 1947) and the melted Hayes Adobe (constructed by ca. 1875 and added onto thereafter, deteriorating by 1930s, ruins only by 1965, no longer extant). The Marrón-Hayes Adobes Historic District was once part of Silvestre Marrón’s much larger 362-acre ranch (Figure 1). The Marrón- Hayes Adobes Historic District is significant for its association with Silvestre Marrón, one of the first non-Indian settlers of the present-day Oceanside- Carlsbad area, and John Chauncey Hayes, an influential late nineteenth-century and early-twentieth-century lawyer, judge, newspaper man, farmer, real estate developer, and one of the founders of the city of Oceanside. The extant Marrón- Hayes Adobe is significant as a rare and intact example of a late Mexican-style adobe in San Diego County (1850-1906), as well as an excellent example of mid- twentieth-century (1947) Mission Revival architecture, which was a romanticized revival of the Spanish-Mexican architectural roots of San Diego.

    February 23, 2016 Rod Bradley BHA, Inc. 5115 Avenida Encinas, Suite L Carlsbad, CA 92010 Re: Cultural Resources Study for the Yada Family Farms Subdivision Project, Carlsbad, San Diego County, California Dear Mr. Bradley, This report presents the results of a cultural resources study conducted by ASM Affiliates, Inc. (ASM) for the proposed Yada Family Farms Subdivision Project (Project). The Project is located in the city of Carlsbad, San Diego County, California. The Project site is approximately 5 acres in extent and is located east of Valley Street, between Buena Vista Way and McCauley Lane. The Project is shown in Section 6 of Township 12 South, Range 4 West, and in Section 31 of Township 11 South, Range 4 West, in the southwestern central portion of the San Luis Rey USGS 7.5-minute topographic quadrangle (Figures 1 and 2). This study was performed in accordance with the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) to determine the presence or absence of potentially significant prehistoric and historic resources within the project’s Area of Potential Effects (APE). The City of Carlsbad is the lead agency for the Project. This cultural resources study consisted of a review of all relevant site records and reports on file with the South Coastal Information Center (SCIC) of the California Historical Resources Information System (CHRIS) at San Diego State University within a 1/2-mile (mi.) search radius, a pedestrian survey of the APE, and a review of the Sacred Lands File held by the Native American Heritage Commission (NAHC). No cultural resources were identified within the APE during ASM’s pedestrian survey.

Olive Mishap’s attire consists of a green duster coat that she originally wore for a photograph in a London studio in 1888 and a red frock hand-stitched by British Shakespearean actress Ellen Terry as she awaited her cue to go on stage at the Lyceum theater in the late 1880s. Both dolls and their vintage wardrobe are in the collection of the La Jolla Historical Society.

    Felipa Osuna: “The Oldest Resident of Old Town in 1878” Translated and Edited by Rose Marie Beebe and Robert Senkewicz Introduction1 after speaking with Juana Machado, another san diego Californiana, thomas savage interviewed Felipa osuna. Her ancestry symbolized the close-knit and interrelated nature of many members of the Californio community. Her maternal grandmother was María Feliciana de arballo, the widow whose behavior on the second anza expedition had so upset Father Pedro Font. María Feliciana was also the maternal grandparent of Josefa Carrillo, whom Henry Cerruti had interviewed more than two years previously. Felipa osuna’s paternal grandparents were Juan Ismerio de osuna and María Ignacia alvarado. they were also the paternal grand- parents of Miguel avila, whose widow, María Inocenta Pico, savage himself would interview in less than three months’ time. Juan Ismerio de osuna had been a member of the presidio company at loreto, in Baja California, and was a member of the Portolá expedition in 1769. after the expedition he returned to Baja California, where he continued in the military. In 1774, governor Felipe de Barri sent him as a special courier with some important reports he wished to send to Mexico City. He went to alta California in the 1770s and served at the san diego presidio and with the mission guard at san gabriel.
