  • Mating Analysis West Coast
MATING ANALYSIS You may submit your mare online at lanesend.com or call 859-873-7300 to discuss your matings with CHANCE TIMM, [email protected], JILL MCCULLY, [email protected] or LEVANA CAPRIA, [email protected]. WEST COAST Flatter – Caressing by Honour and Glory 2014 Bay l 16.2 Hands “An Eclipse Award winning champion, West Coast is by an outstanding sire son of A.P. Indy, out of a ChampionTwo-Year-Old Filly. West Coast earned a title as Champion Three-Year-Old Colt with five consecutive victories, four in stakes events, and ran 1-2-3 in six consecutive grade one events, including when capturing the Travers Stakes (G1) and Pennsylvania Derby (G1). He is by Flatter, a leading stallion son of A.P. Indy, and sire of more than 50 stakes winners, and out of Caressing, Champion and Breeders’ Cup (G1) winner at two.“ The offspring of West Coast will be free of Northern Dancer at four generations on their sire’s side, and Flatter has crossed well with a wide variety of broodmare sires from that line. The cross with mares from the Danzig branch of Northern Dancer has been particulary productive with seven stakes winners, including graded stakes winners Classic Point and Mad Flatter out of mares by Langfuhr and Honor Grades (who gives inbreeding to the dam of A.P. Indy), and there are also stakes winners out of mares by War Front – who appears particularly interesting here, giving inbreeding to Relaunch and a full-sister – Danzig Connection, Ghazi and Military (who would be intriguing here).

MARQUETTE LAW REVIEW Volume 98 Summer 2015 Number 4 NOT YOUR MOTHER’S WILL: GENDER, LANGUAGE, AND WILLS KAREN J. SNEDDON* “Boys will be boys, but girls must be young ladies” is an echoing patriarchal refrain from the past. Formal equality has not produced equality in all areas, as demonstrated by the continuing wage gap. Gender bias lingers and can be identified in language. This Article focuses on Wills, one of the oldest forms of legal documents, to explore the intersection of gender and language. With conceptual antecedents in pre-history, written Wills found in Ancient Egyptian tombs embody the core characteristics of modern Wills. The past endows the drafting and implementation of Wills with a wealth of traditions and experiences. The past, however, also entombs patriarchal notions inappropriate in Wills of today. This Article explores the language of the Will to parse the historical choices that remain relevant choices for today and the vestiges of a patriarchal past that should be avoided.

  • Early History of Thoroughbred Horses in Virginia (1730-1865)
Early History of Thoroughbred Horses in Virginia (1730-1865) Old Capitol at Williamsburg with Guests shown on Horseback and in a Horse-drawn Carriage Virginia History Series #11-08 © 2008 First Horse Races in North America/Virginia (1665/1674) The first race-course in North America was built on the Salisbury Plains (now known as the Hempstead Plains) of Long Island, New York in 1665. The present site of Belmont Park is on the Western edge of the Hempstead Plains. In 1665, the first horse racing meet in North America was held at this race-course called “Newmarket” after the famous track in England. These early races were match events between two or three horses and were run in heats at a distance of 3 or 4 miles; a horse had to complete in at least two heats to be judged the winner. By the mid-18th century, single, "dash" races of a mile or so were the norm. Virginia's partnership with horses began back in 1610 with the arrival of the first horses to the Virginia colonies. Forward thinking Virginia colonists began to improve upon the speed of these short stocky horses by introducing some of the best early imports from England into their local bloodlines. Horse racing has always been popular in Virginia, especially during Colonial times when one-on-one matches took place down village streets, country lanes and across level pastures. Some historians claim that the first American Horse races were held near Richmond in Enrico County (now Henrico County), Virginia, in 1674. A Match Race at Tucker’s Quarter Paths – painting by Sam Savitt Early Racing in America Boston vs Fashion (The Great Match Race) Importation of Thoroughbreds into America The first Thoroughbred horse imported into the American Colonies was Bulle Rock (GB), who was imported in 1730 by Samuel Gist of Hanover County, Virginia.

  • PROCEEDINGS of the SOCIETY of ANTIQUARIES of SCOTLAND, Vol 79
PROCEEDINGS OF THE SOCIETY OF ANTIQUARIES OF SCOTLAND, Vol 79 churned and the butter "was about to separate, the dairy people put red-hot stones into it and churned until the butter floated on top.1 The Icelanders in the Middle Ages also used hot stones in the treatment .of milk. Burt also has an interesting reference to this method of cooking. He says 'I have been assured, that in some of the Islands the meaner Sort of People still retain the Custom of boiling the Beef in the Hide; or otherwise (being destitute of Vessels of Metal or Earth) they put Water into a Block of Wood, made hollow by; the help of the Dirk and burning; and then with pretty large Stones heated red-hot, and successively quenched in that Vessel, they keep the Water boiling till they have dressed their Food”. Jan Petersen describe the discovery of a wooden trough 4 and a wooden spear 80 cm. below the surface of a bog. My colleague, Dr B. M. C. Eagar, has, at my request, kindly made me a drawing (fig. 3) based on Dr Petersen's photograph. Pollen-analysis seems to point to a date for the trough "between the viking age and the Middle Ages proper." Dr Petersen is inclined, however, on archaeological grounds to favour an earlier date and to regard the finds "as remains of sacrifice from early iron age"; but he points out that oblong, steatite troughs of the same form, which are probably copies of wooden prototypes, are known from late viking times, which would support Dr Paegri's pollen-analytic dating, The .Naerb0 trough is much smaller than the Loch Treig and Cumberland specimens, but the resemblance in shape is interesting.
