Disorienting Futures: Asian/America in Science Fiction Esther Yu Springboro, Ohio BA in English Literature, The University of Chicago, 2013 A Thesis presented to the Graduate Faculty of the University of Virginia in Candidacy for the Degree of Master of Arts Department of English University of Virginia May 2015 Yu 1 The big-budget science fiction film looms large over the field of modern cultural production. Its influential symbolic function in the popular imagination is far more impactful than mere gross revenue—though there is plenty of that, too. Part of the allure of the science fiction genre lies in its re-imagination of familiar worlds, projecting what is known into alternate universes and temporalities. This projection often looks to the future, and as such deals with what is to come: an ideal space for exploring and amplifying current social anxieties. Science fiction is thus inherently political, since its world construction cannot be read without a consideration of the possible impacts for imagined identity in a rearranged sociopolitical system. Such structural reconfigurations, which deal in identity and environment, are necessarily political presentations even if not overtly claiming to be so. Science fiction film is a particularly useful medium for considering the ways in which the genre presents these political aspects, since its visuality and mass-market appeal are often invested in the use of aesthetic codes with instantly readable meanings. These aesthetics of familiar newness can take many forms, from the Matrix’s running lines of green code to the smooth, clean, Silicon-Valley world of Spike Jonze’s Her. -

Operetta after the Habsburg Empire by Ulrike Petersen A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Music in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in Charge: Professor Richard Taruskin, Chair Professor Mary Ann Smart Professor Elaine Tennant Spring 2013 © 2013 Ulrike Petersen All Rights Reserved Abstract Operetta after the Habsburg Empire by Ulrike Petersen Doctor of Philosophy in Music University of California, Berkeley Professor Richard Taruskin, Chair This thesis discusses the political, social, and cultural impact of operetta in Vienna after the collapse of the Habsburg Empire. As an alternative to the prevailing literature, which has approached this form of musical theater mostly through broad surveys and detailed studies of a handful of well‐known masterpieces, my dissertation presents a montage of loosely connected, previously unconsidered case studies. Each chapter examines one or two highly significant, but radically unfamiliar, moments in the history of operetta during Austria’s five successive political eras in the first half of the twentieth century. Exploring operetta’s importance for the image of Vienna, these vignettes aim to supply new glimpses not only of a seemingly obsolete art form but also of the urban and cultural life of which it was a part. Social Science Fiction from the Sixties to the Present Instructor: Joseph Shack [email protected] Office Hours: To be announced Course Description The label “social science fiction,” initially coined by Isaac Asimov in 1953 as a broad category to describe narratives focusing on the effects of novel technologies and scientific advances on society, became a pejorative leveled at a new group of authors that rose to prominence during the sixties and seventies. These writers, who became associated with “New Wave” science fiction movement, differentiated themselves from their predecessors by consciously turning their backs on the pulpy adventure stories and tales of technological optimism of their predecessors in order to produce experimental, literary fiction. Rather than concerning themselves with “hard” science, social science fiction written by authors such as Ursula K. Le Guin and Samuel Delany focused on speculative societies (whether dystopian, alien, futuristic, etc.) and their effects on individual characters. In this junior tutorial you’ll receive a crash course in the groundbreaking science fiction of the sixties and seventies (with a few brief excursions to the eighties and nineties) through various mediums, including the experimental short stories, landmark novels, and innovative films that characterize the period. Responding to the social and political upheavals they were experiencing, each of our authors leverages particular sub-genres of science fiction to provide a pointed critique of their contemporary society. During the first eight weeks of the course, as a complement to the social science fiction we’ll be reading, students will familiarize themselves with various theoretical and critical methods that approach literature as a reflection of the social institutions from which it originates, including Marxist literary critique, queer theory, feminism, critical race theory, and postmodernism. -

She has appeared in Key and Peele and @Midnight. Michelle is a series regular on VH1’s Best Week Ever, MTV’s Walk of Shame, Oxygen Network’s Kiss and Tell, and was Jenny McCarthy’s sidekick on her late-night talk show Jenny. Craig Todaro (One Year Program alum) Craig performed in American Comedy Institute’s 25th Anniversary Show where he was selected by Gotham Comedy Club owner Chris Mazzilli to appear on Gotham Comedy Live. Craig is now a pro regular at Gotham Comedy Club where he recently appeared in Gotham Comedy All Stars. Yannis Pappas (One Year Program alum) Yannis recently appeared in his first Comedy Central Half Hour special. He has been featured on Gotham Comedy Live, VH1's Best Week Ever and CBS. He is currently the co-anchor of Fusion Live, a one-hour news magazine program on Fusion Network, which focuses on current events, pop culture and satire. He tours the world doing stand up comedy and is known for his immensely popular characters Mr. Panos and Maurica. Along with Director Jesse Scaturro, he is the co-founder of the comedy production company Ditch Films. Jessica Kirson is a touring national headliner. [The dead remain in the midst of the living.] —Adolfo Bioy Casares, La invención de Morel (1940) During Argentina’s 1976-83 “Dirty War,” over thirty thousand citizens were labeled as dissidents, forcibly removed from their homes, and “disappeared” by a military dictatorship. Infants and young children were separated from parents and given to childless officers and bureaucrats; adults were hooded, tortured in 340 clandestine detention centers, and eventually shoved from cargo planes over the South Atlantic. Another twelve thousand people were held as political prisoners but survived, and countless others were threatened with similar treatment should they fail to comply with military orders. In some ways, this “Process of National Reorganization” was not unique: twentieth-century Argentine politics featured a seemingly endless cycle of promises of democratic freedoms and national reforms that never quite materialized. And, of course, atrocities occurred elsewhere in Latin America, too, especially as US officials became willing to lend material and ideological support to virtually any regime willing to repudiate communism. What stands out in Argentina, however, is the extent to which fear and passivity dominated citizens not only during but after the junta years. Groups in neighboring countries such as Chile and Brazil protested vigorously against similar takeovers, but silence reigned in Argentina because agitators so quickly became abductees, “los desaparecidos.” Even when the dictatorship collapsed, threats and violence continued for decades against those who would speak out against the nation’s former leaders.
