Social Science Fiction from the Sixties to the Present Instructor: Joseph Shack [email protected] Office Hours: To be announced Course Description The label “social science fiction,” initially coined by Isaac Asimov in 1953 as a broad category to describe narratives focusing on the effects of novel technologies and scientific advances on society, became a pejorative leveled at a new group of authors that rose to prominence during the sixties and seventies. These writers, who became associated with “New Wave” science fiction movement, differentiated themselves from their predecessors by consciously turning their backs on the pulpy adventure stories and tales of technological optimism of their predecessors in order to produce experimental, literary fiction. Rather than concerning themselves with “hard” science, social science fiction written by authors such as Ursula K. Le Guin and Samuel Delany focused on speculative societies (whether dystopian, alien, futuristic, etc.) and their effects on individual characters. In this junior tutorial you’ll receive a crash course in the groundbreaking science fiction of the sixties and seventies (with a few brief excursions to the eighties and nineties) through various mediums, including the experimental short stories, landmark novels, and innovative films that characterize the period. Responding to the social and political upheavals they were experiencing, each of our authors leverages particular sub-genres of science fiction to provide a pointed critique of their contemporary society. During the first eight weeks of the course, as a complement to the social science fiction we’ll be reading, students will familiarize themselves with various theoretical and critical methods that approach literature as a reflection of the social institutions from which it originates, including Marxist literary critique, queer theory, feminism, critical race theory, and postmodernism. -

[The dead remain in the midst of the living.] —Adolfo Bioy Casares, La invención de Morel (1940) During Argentina’s 1976-83 “Dirty War,” over thirty thousand citizens were labeled as dissidents, forcibly removed from their homes, and “disappeared” by a military dictatorship. Infants and young children were separated from parents and given to childless officers and bureaucrats; adults were hooded, tortured in 340 clandestine detention centers, and eventually shoved from cargo planes over the South Atlantic. Another twelve thousand people were held as political prisoners but survived, and countless others were threatened with similar treatment should they fail to comply with military orders. In some ways, this “Process of National Reorganization” was not unique: twentieth-century Argentine politics featured a seemingly endless cycle of promises of democratic freedoms and national reforms that never quite materialized. And, of course, atrocities occurred elsewhere in Latin America, too, especially as US officials became willing to lend material and ideological support to virtually any regime willing to repudiate communism. What stands out in Argentina, however, is the extent to which fear and passivity dominated citizens not only during but after the junta years. Groups in neighboring countries such as Chile and Brazil protested vigorously against similar takeovers, but silence reigned in Argentina because agitators so quickly became abductees, “los desaparecidos.” Even when the dictatorship collapsed, threats and violence continued for decades against those who would speak out against the nation’s former leaders. -

Green Horror: The Use of Environmental Themes in Modern American Horror Cinema by Dana (Devorah) Gordin August 2019 Master’s Thesis School for Environment and Sustainability, University of Michigan Thesis Committee: Associate Professor Rebecca Hardin, Chair Associate Professor Julia Wondolleck Abstract This study began with the question of what environmental themes may be present in contemporary American horror media and what any trends in these narratives or works may suggest about American understanding of, beliefs towards and fears about the potential environmental future. With guidance from current and former staff at the Askwith Media Library at the University of Michigan, I conducted a review of films that elicit much of their audience engagement through horror while having clear environmental themes or narratives, then selected twelve cinema-released films for critical analysis. Each shared a central premise in which nature shows a widespread response to collective human abuse of the natural world. My criteria excluded numerous examples of works with similar themes, but which did not have as direct a message. I also privileged films that were critically acclaimed and more widely discussed. Finally, I honed for comparative analysis of tropes and themes on storylines with an overall sense that the environment itself is not as much of a threat as other humans when it comes to survival. My results and discussion raise concerns with some of the messaging in recent environmentally progressive discourse that uses a similar framing of threat to bolster environmental support. While there has been an understanding that specific discussions of human threat in relationship to the environment compels people emotionally, it is not the result of greater environmental care or understanding, but often heavily influenced by other fears, including anxiety about increasing human mobility, demographic pressures, and cultural differences. -

Victor Frankenstein Frankenstein: The Modern Prometheus (1818) Course Description and Objectives Communication 323, Science Fiction Cinema, will primarily focus on the examination of the North American science fiction film genre. The readings, lectures, and screenings are organized historically to facilitate an understanding of the evolution of science fiction cinema within a cultural context. The course is also designed to expand the student's understanding of the critical/cultural theoretical approaches most commonly employed in the analysis of science fiction texts. The format for each class will consist of lecture, screening, and discussion. Assigned readings and screenings must be completed on time to facilitate the class discussions. Students are expected to watch at least one assigned film outside of class each week. This is a technique that is often used to comment on conflicts within society, in particular to comment on the relationships either between different countries or cultures within a nation. -

The University of Western Ontario Department of English/Film Studies 3357F – Science Fiction Cinema Course Description This course provides students with a survey of Science Fiction cinema, one of the most popular and enduring genres in the history of cinema. In this course we will engage with the question of what generic elements (narrative, mise-en-scène, philosophical content, etc.) are specific to the Science Fiction film, and will analyze them in relation to larger issues, such as modernity, the relationship between technology, society and the individual, and the history of utopian thought, science and reason. How have filmmakers used Science Fiction to reflect on the social and political questions of the present? Why is it easier to imagine the end of all life on earth than radical social change? When does technology on earth or on the screen serve an ideological function, when does it allow for new ways of thinking, feeling and being? How has Science Fiction cinema envisioned radical otherness and explored the limits of what it means to be “human”? What role has Science Fiction cinema played at key points in film history to advance new filmmaking technologies or marketing strategies? How does Science Fiction cinema relate to other genres with little critical/academic recognition, but huge fan cultures, such as horror or fantasy?
