2 2017 A-10 MEN’S SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIP MANUAL ADMINISTRATION The Atlantic 10 Men’s Soccer Championship is under the control, direction and supervision of the Atlantic 10 Conference and the administration of the host institution. The Atlantic 10 Conference will have the final authority regarding all Championship matters. Some adjustments may be expected in the best interests of the Championship. The Atlantic 10 representative(s) must approve any adjustments with the input of the host institution administrator.

The 2017-18 NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Championship Manual will serve as a general guide for the Atlantic 10 Championship.

CROWD CONTROL The host institution is responsible for all aspects of crowd control. Air horns, thunder sticks, whistles and other artificial noisemakers are not permitted and will be confiscated by game management.

PLAYERING RULES 2017-18 NCAA Men’s and Women’s Soccer Rules will govern A-10 Championship play.

GAME OFFICIALS A three-person referee system will be used for all games of the Championship. In addition, there will be one (1) official assigned to the scorer’s table area for each game. The Atlantic 10 Coordinator of Officials will select and assign the officials to work each game. Assignments will be released prior to each game.

FORMAT The Atlantic 10 Men’s Soccer Championship is a single-elimination championship involving eight (8) qualifying conference members. Seeds are determined by regular season conference standings according to final overall conference records and the tie-breaker formula, if necessary. Quarterfinals matches will be played on the campuses of the top four seeds (#1-#4) on either Saturday, November 4 or Sunday, November 5 based on facility and schedule availability. Game times will be set by the host school with prior approval from the Conference office. Games should not begin before noon (12:00 p.m.) on Saturday or Sunday. The winners of the Quarterfinal matches will advance to the University of Dayton for the Semifinals and Championship Final on Friday, November 10 and Sunday, November 12, respectively.

The winner of the A-10 Championship will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Men’s Soccer Championship. Pairings for the NCAA Championship will be announced on Monday, November 13.

SEEDING Seeding for the Championship will be based on a cumulative point system from the A-10 regular season. Points are awarded as follows:  3 points awarded for a conference victory  1 point awarded for a conference tie  0 points awarded for a conference loss

TIE-BREAKING PROCEDURE In the event of a tie, the following tie-breaker system will be used for selection to the Championship and seeding in the Championship:

1. Head-to-head competition between tied teams. If head-to-head competition did not occur for all teams involved, skip to ‘2’. 2. Composite Conference record (by points) versus all common Conference opponents. This becomes step “1” if head-to-head competition did not occur for all tied teams. 3. Each team’s Conference record (by points) versus the highest common Conference opponent in the standings and continuing down through the lowest common opponent in the standings, if necessary. 4. Overall goal differential of the tied teams in head-to-head competition (maximum of six goals per game). 5. Goal differential against common Conference opponents (maximum of six goals per game). 6. Goal differential versus the highest common Conference opponents in the standings and continuing down through the lowest common opponent in the standings, if necessary (maximum of six goals per game). NOTE: When arriving at another pair of tied teams while comparing goal differential, use each team’s combined goal differential against the tied teams as a group rather than the performance against individual tied teams. 7. Coin toss if a tie exists among two teams and a draw if a tie exists among three or more teams.

NOTE: All ties will be broken in descending order. Once ties are broken, they remain broken throughout the tie breaker process. Each time a tie is broken (regardless of the number of remaining tied teams), the tie-breaker procedure begins anew with step ‘1’.

3 2017 A-10 MEN’S SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIP MANUAL
