2021 MEDIA GUIDE Arctic Rally Finland February 26 - 28, 2021 ROUND 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 Arctic Rally Finland February 26 - 28, 2021 HYUNDAI’S HELLO Given the freezing temperatures outside, I would like to extend a warm welcome to Arctic Rally Finland and for the first of what we hope will be two visits by the WRC and Hyundai Motorsport to the country in 2021. Before I underline the team’s hopes and expectations for this event, I wish to acknowledge all the hard work that’s gone into putting on this rally in such a short amount of time. The efforts of AKK Sports and all the volunteers, particularly in the context of COVID-19, has really impressed me so a big thank you to them. It’s fair to say we showed our limits on Rallye Monte-Carlo and found ourselves licking our wounds and trying to get ahead. Unfortunately, it didn’t work there and after making some changes to our approach we start the second round of the season hoping it will be much better than the first. Having wished a fond farewell to Carlos del Barrio after Monte as he prepared for the next chapter of his career, we are pleased to welcome back Craig and Paul for the start of their half-season campaign in a Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC. We know very well their ability and determination as they try to make a strong start to their season. As well as our regular World Rally Car drivers, we are giving a big chance to a really promising youngster, Oliver Solberg. -

The countdown is on to the return of MINI on the international motorsport stage. This season, the new MINI WRC Team will compete at selected rounds in the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC). The aim is to gain valuable experience, in order to be perfectly prepared for the complete 2012 World Championship season. The MINI WRC has been developed by Prodrive, based on the MINI Countryman. It is equipped with a 1.6-litre turbo engine derived from the MINI production models, which was developed by BMW Motorsport for use in series run according to FIA Super2000 regulations, including the World Touring Car Championship. As well as its works involvement with the MINI WRC Team, Prodrive is supplying the customer car to private rally teams, who will also run the car in the S2000 class of the World Rally Championship. -

They helped the WRC stars keep up their intense fight until the end, even though the format had been significantly shortened compared with the originally planned route. The conditions were something of an unknown for everyone and the drivers were forced to find the most effective driving style for the stages which alternated from bare gravel to portions of ice, with no sign of the snow walls on which they tend to lean most years. In the end, though, spectators were treated to an entertaining week in Sweden’s Värmland and Norway’s Finnskog region. Given that a single tyre type is authorised for each class at Rally Sweden (WRC: MICHELIN X-Ice North 3 / WRC2: MICHELIN Ice North NA 01), tyre strategies proved relatively straightforward and chiefly involved choosing whether to carry one or two ‘spares’ for the unfamiliar terrain. Indeed, instead of the usual wintry blanket of snow and thick ice that competitors usually face on this fixture, recent mild weather meant that many of the event’s trademark features were missing, causing the organisers to make big changes to their plans. Compared with the 19 stages totalling 319.17 kilometres that were contested in 2019, only 11 (171.64km) were scheduled this time around, and two of those were eventually dropped, shortening the final competitive distance to just 148.55 kilometres. -
