Club Brugge's hopes of reaching the UEFA Champions League round of 16 are hanging in the balance as they take on an already-eliminated Zenit side who need a win to have any hope of snatching third place in Group F. • The Belgian side are third in the standings on four points, four behind second-placed Lazio and five adrift of Borussia Dortmund. Zenit have only one point and can finish no higher than third; indeed, failure to win in Belgium would mean the Russian club come fourth in their section for the second season in a row. • Three of Club Brugge's points came in St Petersburg on Matchday 1, Charles De Ketelaere scoring three minutes into added time to give the visitors a 2-1 victory after Emmanuel Bonaventure's 63rd-minute opener had been cancelled out by an own goal from the Belgian side's keeper Ethan Horvath. Previous meetings • The sides' only fixtures before this season came in the 1987/88 UEFA Cup first round. Zenit were 2-0 winners in the home first leg but Club Brugge wiped that out with a 5-0 victory back in Belgium, Kenneth Brylle Larsen doing most of the damage with four goals. Form guide Club Brugge • After kicking off Group F with that win at Zenit, the Belgian club took only one point from their two subsequent home games, against Lazio (1-1) and Dortmund (0-3), before losing by the same scoreline in Germany last time out. • Club Brugge are in the group stage for the third year in a row, the first time they have achieved that feat; it is their eighth UEFA Champions League group appearance overall. They have never progressed to the knockout rounds. • In 2019/20, the Belgian side finished third behind Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid in Group A, picking up three points (D3 L3). It was the second year running they had finished third in their group. • They went on to lose to Manchester United in the UEFA Europa League round of 32 (1-1 h, 0-5 a). • The Matchday 1 win at Zenit was one of only two victories for Club Brugge in their last 22 fixtures in the UEFA Champions League proper (D7 L13), both wins coming away from home. They have won none of their last 12 home matches in the group stage (D5 L7), since a 3-2 defeat of Rapid Wien in November 2005. • Club Brugge are without a win in six home European matches (D3 L3), since a 2-1 defeat of LASK in the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League play-offs. That was their third straight home victory; they had lost only one of their eight previous home European matches (W3 D4) before their current winless streak started. • Matchday 1 was Club Brugge's first game against a Russian club in European competition since 2002, when they picked up one point from their two games against Lokomotiv Moskva (0-0 h, 0-2 a) in the UEFA Champions League first group stage. • That goalless draw with Loko made it three home games unbeaten against Russian teams for Club Brugge (W2 D1), and three straight clean sheets. They had lost each of their first two home games against Russian clubs, both 3-1 to Spartak Moskva in the UEFA Cup. Zenit • Beaten at home by Club Brugge on the opening night, Zenit also lost at Dortmund (0-2) before getting their first point on the board with a 1-1 draw at home to Lazio, although a 3-1 loss in Rome last time out ended their hopes of reaching the round of 16. • Zenit claimed their seventh USSR/Russian league title in 2019/20, and their second in a row; their last six triumphs have all come from 2007 onwards. They also added the Russian Cup to complete the club's second domestic double. • This is the St Petersburg outfit's eighth UEFA Champions League group campaign; they reached the round of 16 in 2011/12, 2013/14 and 2015/16 but have never progressed further. • In 2019/20 Zenit finished fourth in their section, behind RB Leipzig, Lyon and Benfica, despite picking up seven points from their six matches. It was their earliest European exit since 2009/10, when they were eliminated in the UEFA Europa League play-offs. • The St Petersburg team have won only three of their last 15 European matches (D2 L10). • Zenit have also recorded only two victories in their last 13 UEFA Champions League games (D2 L9). • The Russian side are without a win in 14 European away games (D3 L11) and seven on the road in the UEFA Champions League (D1 L6). • Zenit's last fixtures with a Belgian club before this season came in the 2016/17 UEFA Europa League round of 32, the Russian club bowing out to Anderlecht on away goals having lost 2-0 in Belgium before a 3-1 home success in
