Fall 2021 Category Category FALL 2021 WWW.POINTEDLEAFPRESS.COM CATEGORY CATEGORY 2 3 FROM THE PUBLISHER A NOTE FROM THE PUBLISHER SUZANNE SLESIN It gives me great pleasure to present the new Pointed Leaf Press catalog for Fall 2021. For all of us, it has been a challenging 18 months, and so, more than ever, I am grateful for the continued support of our extraordinarily loyal team, our authors, and all the people who have, in spite of many demanding circumstances, managed to help us get our books out into the world. We are especially grateful to our readers, who continue to appreciate what we set out to do when I founded the company in 2002. Pointed Leaf Press has grown to become one of the top—and award winning—publishers of illustrated books in the worlds of interior design, fashion, art, and photography. As a former art historian, and after more than 35 years as a journalist, editor, and reporter at such publications as the New York Times, as well as at numerous magazines, including New York, Esquire, and House & Garden, I continue to be fascinated by the careers and accomplishments—as well as the intimate and powerful stories—of the talented people in the creative fields that are so influential and essential to the world in which we live. At Pointed Leaf Press, I work closely with our team to ensure that each of our books is designed, produced, and edited to the highest standards. Each of our titles is individualistic and created to suit the needs and aspirations of its author—whether to feature the work of top interiors and garden designers and architects or to reintroduce the work of legendary photographers. Collecting, a lifelong passion, is another focus of many of our books, offering a glimpse into subjects that are both original and stimulating. This season, two of our new titles seem particularly appropriate as the world is opening up: Jiun Ho: Experience will, without a doubt, get you out of the house with a desire for traveling to exotic places and thinking about how a designer’s inspirations for his furniture, lighting, and textile designs are translated from his life experiences. Dual Nature, by Jane Rosen , is the first monograph on the artist’s work—a document of her travels from the East Coast to the West Coast and back again—voyages that coalesced in meticulously crafted and beautiful works. I am particularly proud that many of our custom books have not only been successful in the marketplace, but also serve as efficient marketing and branding tools for their authors. I hope you will reach out to me personally, visit our website, interact with us through social media, and continue to value the illustrated book as one of the most vital and important cultural elements of our time. 4 5 SOCIAL MEDIA CONTENTS POINTED LEAF PRESS BOOKS FASHION BY CATEGORY 38 SUPER F**CKING LUCKY 23 OUTSIDE THE BOX BY DAVID SCOTT For an alphabetical index of books by title, please see page 75 BY NATASHA FRASER-CAVASSONI 24 CURTAIN UP! • Architectural Digest Mario Buatta
Interior designer Mario Buatta, circa 1976, seated in one of his Anglophile interiors. These days it is commonplace for design whipper- snappers to roll out books celebrating their latest interiors. But Mario Buatta, a premier American decorating talent who has been working since the late Mason, Christopher. Mario Buatta: Fifty Years of American Interior Decoration. Architectural Digest, September 30, 2013 1950s, has patiently waited until now to take the publishing plunge. “I wasn’t looking for more business,” the septuagenarian Prince of Chintz explains, “and I really wanted to do a complete volume and to make it personal, with pictures and stories of people I have worked with.” A hefty 432-page album with a glowing foreword by Architectural Digest's editor emeritus, Paige Rense Noland, and spirited text by Emily Evans Eerdmans, Mario Buatta: Fifty Years of American Interior Decoration (Rizzoli) traces its hero’s jubilant adaptation of English country-house style to an unlikely source: his Italian-American childhood on New York’s Staten Island, where he grew up as the elder son of society bandleader Phil Burton, né Felix Buatta. In a hilarious introductory essay, the designer recalls that he abhorred the sleek Art Deco interiors of his parents’ house and drove his mother, Olive, to distraction by bringing home dusty antiques. Luckily his stylish aunt Mary Mauro—an Auntie Mame type—encouraged him to forge a path that led him to Cooper Union in Manhattan and the Parsons School of Design’s European program. Buatta launched his firm in 1963 and over the years has attracted an impressive and startlingly loyal roster of moguls, society stalwarts, and celebrities, from Barbara Walters to Henry Ford II to Mariah Carey, whose glamorous New York triplex was *AD’*s November 2001 cover story as well as a one-hour special episode of MTV Cribs.

  • Puppets from the Past by Elizabeth I. Johnson for His First Personal
!1 " " " " “Talking Heads”: Puppets from the Past "by Elizabeth I. Johnson For his first personal assignment, celebrity photographer and director Matthew Rolston shot portraits of a different breed of entertainers — ventriloquist dummies. In 2009 he read an article in the New York Times about the Vent Haven Museum, which houses retired ventriloquist puppets. Intrigued by the story, Rolston flew to Fort Mitchell, Kentucky, by way of Cincinnati, to visit the one-of-a-kind museum. Matthew Rolston, Uncle Eddie, from the series “Talking Heads.” The faces of the little figures fascinated Rolston. “I’m not a ventriloquism person,” Rolston said. But at the core of what he does with celebrity photography is the human face. And “these were the most fascinating faces.” The museum agreed to give him access to the figures, and his project began. With a crew of five people, a film generator truck driven all the way from New York, a backdrop, lighting and the help of the curators, the puppets’ photo shoot was ready to begin. !2 Based on his personal response to the puppets, Rolston selected 100 of the nearly 750 displayed, most from the 1820s to 1980s, he said. Anyone handling the puppets had to wear cotton gloves to prevent damage. In much the same way that he would direct a Hollywood star, Rolston manipulated the miniature faces. Many of the figures’ mouths, eyelids and eyebrows move; some have tear ducts for crying and holes in their lip for smoking; some can wiggle their ears. But Rolston feels that the eyes make a soulful connection to the camera.

  • Introductory Essay 3 of 3
Hollywood Royale: Out of the School of Los Angeles Introductory Essay 3 of 3: Glamour Reborn: Out of the School of Los Angeles By Charles Churchward HOLLYWOOD, September, 1985 — LA’s oven-like Santa Ana winds blew down from the nearby Mojave Desert on the dusty sidewalks of Melrose Avenue one unseasonably warm evening. The city’s nascent style elite were about to descend on the G. Ray Hawkins Gallery for an exhibition highlighting the work of three local, up-and-coming portrait photographers whose only mutual connection was that their work had been spotted in the pages of Andy Warhol’s proto-celebrity magazine, Interview. The winds of creative change were in the air. Warhol began Interview in New York in 1969 as a clever way to receive invitations to screenings and meet celebrities in society and entertainment. More importantly, it was a new way for Warhol to express his ongoing obsession with the idea of fame. In its bare beginnings, the crudely-printed magazine was an exploration, primarily made up of verbatim interviews with individuals that fascinated Warhol, illustrated with his famous Polaroids, and occasionally, a gratuitous page or two dedicated to campy publicity stills from golden-age Hollywood films. But by the late-1970s, Interview had started to show some polish, becoming an important platform for magazine photography. With virtually no budget and fueled by Warhol’s ever growing interest in the concept of Hollywood celebrity, Warhol and his magazine’s editors, Bob Colacello and later, Gael Love, sought out the next generation of young artists and photographers hungry to find a showcase for their work.

He has developed specialized techniques for applying and layering color. There are infinite possibilities on how to apply paint onto a surface and he often creates his own tools for that purpose. Swiss-born, Schmidli studied photography and fine art in Switzerland and Rome. He worked as a photographer and painter in Zurich before moving to California in 1989. After coming to California, Schmidli developed his work making backdrops for luxury photography. Working with top photographers, art directors, and set designers; Schmidli has set the industry standard in his work with clients such as Vogue, Vanity Fair, and more. His paintings are the culmination of nearly 50 years of painting experience. Schmidli combines his creativity with an open mind and a combination of an intuitive and resourceful approach to art. The artist says of his process, “An important aspect of my artwork is the removal of my own artistic hand. Instead of controlling and demanding the paint move and act a certain way, I let the paint naturally manifest and express its pure form/ true colors/ most natural movement.” His paintings have appeared in highly respected magazine publications, films, and branding. With work featured in fashion spreads of icons such as Nike and Balenciaga, celebrity photographers such as Annie Liebovitz and Peter Lindberg, and a lengthy list of editorial work in leading magazines and newspapers across the world.
