Figuring the Future in Los(T) Angeles
1 MUSEUM DIGITAL ARCHIVE NOW DIG THIS! ART & BLACK LOS ANGELES 1960–1980 Figuring the Future in Los(t) Angeles HAZEL V. CARBY ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED IN COMPARATIVE AMERICAN STUDIES: AN INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL 1, NO. 1 (2003): 19–34. Los Angeles, California, is a city that has a very complex symbolic relation to the rest of the US. For me, the story of the Belmont Learning Center vividly dramatizes the betrayal of minority dreams by the boosterism, corruption, ineptitude, and potential for environmental disaster that characterizes the political culture of the city. Planned more than a decade ago at a projected cost of $200 million, it will be, if completed, the most expensive public high school ever built in the US.1 Construction of the Belmont Learning Center proceeded despite warnings issued by the State Division of Oil and Gas about the dangers of the site, an abandoned oil field. The black officials of the school board were desperate to solve the overcrowding and generally dire conditions in which so many young black, Latino, and poor students do not get educated in the Los Angeles Unified School District. But potentially explosive methane gas and toxic hydrogen sulfide gas, known to cause neurological damage, seeped into the school structure for which there appeared to be no remediation. Finally, after spending $170 million, the School Board voted in January 2000 to abandon the project.2 However, Superintendent Roy Romer revived the project, and, with $175 million spent so far, completion could add yet another $100 million to the costs. Oil-well logs have revealed an earthquake fault underneath already existing buildings on the campus; any seismic activity would cause a rush of the gases with devastating consequences.3 More than a metaphor for the city, this unfolding tragic narrative actually embodies the multi-layered political, social, economic, racialized and environmental complexity of Los Angeles from its fissures and abandoned oil fields below ground to the concrete highways soaring through, around and above its neighborhoods. -

A Publisher and an Antique Dealer for Most of His Life, Streeter Blair (1888–1966) Began Painting at the Age of 61 in 1949
1960 Paintings by Streeter Blair (January 12–February 7) A publisher and an antique dealer for most of his life, Streeter Blair (1888–1966) began painting at the age of 61 in 1949. Blair became quite successful in a short amount of time with numerous exhibitions across the United States and Europe, including several one-man shows as early as 1951. He sought to recapture “those social and business customs which ended when motor cars became common in 1912, changing the life of America’s activities” in his artwork. He believed future generations should have a chance to visually examine a period in the United States before drastic technological change. This exhibition displayed twenty-one of his paintings and was well received by the public. Three of his paintings, the Eisenhower Farm loaned by Mr. & Mrs. George Walker, Bread Basket loaned by Mr. Peter Walker, and Highland Farm loaned by Miss Helen Moore, were sold during the exhibition. [Newsletter, memo, various letters] The Private World of Pablo Picasso (January 15–February 7) A notable exhibition of paintings, drawings, and graphics by Pablo Picasso (1881–1973), accompanied by photographs of Picasso by Life photographer, David Douglas Duncan (1916– 2018). Over thirty pieces were exhibited dating from 1900 to 1956 representing Picasso’s Lautrec, Cubist, Classic, and Guernica periods. These pieces supplemented the 181 Duncan photographs, shown through the arrangement of the American Federation of Art. The selected photographs were from the book of the same title by Duncan and were the first ever taken of Picasso in his home and studio. -

Puppets from the Past by Elizabeth I. Johnson for His First Personal
!1 " " " " “Talking Heads”: Puppets from the Past "by Elizabeth I. Johnson For his first personal assignment, celebrity photographer and director Matthew Rolston shot portraits of a different breed of entertainers — ventriloquist dummies. In 2009 he read an article in the New York Times about the Vent Haven Museum, which houses retired ventriloquist puppets. Intrigued by the story, Rolston flew to Fort Mitchell, Kentucky, by way of Cincinnati, to visit the one-of-a-kind museum. Matthew Rolston, Uncle Eddie, from the series “Talking Heads.” The faces of the little figures fascinated Rolston. “I’m not a ventriloquism person,” Rolston said. But at the core of what he does with celebrity photography is the human face. And “these were the most fascinating faces.” The museum agreed to give him access to the figures, and his project began. With a crew of five people, a film generator truck driven all the way from New York, a backdrop, lighting and the help of the curators, the puppets’ photo shoot was ready to begin. !2 Based on his personal response to the puppets, Rolston selected 100 of the nearly 750 displayed, most from the 1820s to 1980s, he said. Anyone handling the puppets had to wear cotton gloves to prevent damage. In much the same way that he would direct a Hollywood star, Rolston manipulated the miniature faces. Many of the figures’ mouths, eyelids and eyebrows move; some have tear ducts for crying and holes in their lip for smoking; some can wiggle their ears. But Rolston feels that the eyes make a soulful connection to the camera. -
