Senior women are incapable of reproduction, mastering their bodies, or arousing sexual desire in themselves or others. The senior actresses’ I explore in the case studies below insert their performances of self and their everyday lives into the large and complicated discourse of sex, producing a counter-narrative to sexually inactive senior women. Their performances actively embody their sexuality outside the frame of a character. This thesis examines how senior actresses’ performances of sexuality extend a discourse of sexuality imposed on older woman by mass media. These women are the public face of senior women’s sexual agency. -

Given the quality of his work and his reputation for high standards, the expectations for a show revolving around Michael Jackson will always be exceedingly high. Cirque du Soleil’s Michael Jackson ONE, produced in conjunction with Jackson’s estate, aspires to meet the level of perfection the star would demand. The show, which combines Jackson’s music with Cirque’s distinctive acrobatic feats, is at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas in a space that was formerly occupied by a production of The Lion King; it was completely renovated specifically for MJ ONE. CDS anchored a team that included Auerbach Pollock Friedlander, Moser Architecture Studio, and Jaffe Holden Acoustics for the design and specification of the rigging and automation, lighting control, and audio-video systems. The show’s story line was written by choreographer Jamie King, who danced in Michael Jackson’s 1992 Dangerous World Tour. The musical director, Kevin Antunes (New Kids on the Block, Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch, Britney Spears, ‘N Sync, Justin Timberlake), made his selections from “Michael’s entire treasure vault” and remixed it specifically for the show. -

Johanna Sapakie Johanna Sapakie’s passion for dance and love for choreography have always played an important role in her life. Her diligent work ethic and dedication to the craft have gotten her far in the ever-expanding world of entertainment. While coming from a strong ballet background, Johanna is an athletic aerialist and dancer schooled in a variety of forms including contemporary, jazz, hip-hop, lyrical, tap, modern, partnering, point work and aerial & pole acrobatics. She was trained from a very young age and has worked with such master teachers as Joe Tremaine, Debbie Allen, Liz Imperio, Marguerite Derricks, Wade Robson and Savion Glover. Miller Professor of English and American Studies © Copyright 2011 by Sara Tenenbaum All rights reserved ii Abstract of Thesis "I Know I Am Someone: Michael Jackson, Thriller, and American Identity" This thesis addresses the cultural phenomenon surrounding Michael Jackson's 1982 album Thriller and uses it as a lens through which to view and analyze the development of a distinct American, primarily youth, identity in 1983 and 1984. It is structured using a three-prong approach that first analyzes the sonic work of the music of Thriller, second explores the characteristics of Michaelmania and the youth identity being constructed within the Michael Jackson pop explosion, and third analyzes the backlash from both the white and African American communities against Jackson in that time to illuminate his subversion and danger to the status quo. I argue that Jackson's act of profound crossover during the Thriller era triggered within the American youth an equally profound act of identity formation that transcended racial stratification in America's past and created a foundational part of our contemporary identity that moves slightly beyond America's troubled racial history. Using both the voices of his fans and his critics to tease out the work his person and his music did in the early 1980's, I advocate we keep Jackson and his work foregrounded in our study of popular culture in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, as his pop explosion fundamentally and permanently effected how Americans understand ourselves and our relations with each other. -
