It has been in the service of librarians, research scholars, publishers and booksellers and those who are interested in the book world for the last 60 years. During these years, it has undergone vicissitudes of fortune with its initial regular appearance slowing down later to the extent of minimizing its active role as a significant book selection tool. Indian National Bibliography, the prime publication of the Central Reference Library, Calcutta, made its appearance as a quarterly in 1958 with annual cumulations. This arrangement continued till 1963. The periodicity was changed to monthly from January 1964, with annual cumulations. The monthly issues had to be suspended after 1977 forced by the circumstances beyond control. But at the same time persistent efforts were made to restore the periodicity to monthly as in 1964 and to revive its services to its clientele. This revival of the monthly issues was possible only from January 1984. Accordingly, all the monthly issues for 1984-1987 & 1989-93 have already been published. In order to clear the backlog and to make the publication up-to-date, for the period from 1994 -1999 only annual volumes are published. Monthly issues are published regularly from June 2000 onwards. Cataloguing and Classification System: As like as earlier years, this issue, i.e. January 2010 onwards 22nd edition of Dewey Decimal Classification system is being followed for the classification of documents included in the INB. The corresponding Colon Classification number (6th Edition) is also assigned at the right hand comer below each entry. INB now uses AACR-I1 in MARC 21 format. The bibliographical records are entered in the original language of the book and then converted into Roman Script. UNICODE Standards are used to enter the records. INB records are appearing with diacritical marks wherever necessary. As per the decision of the National Bibliography Committee, 1955, the records are included in INB in Roman Script with diacritical marks in the fields of title, author, editor, translator, compile, etc, wherever necessary. Rests of the bibliographic details are included in common English. There are minor problems while converting into Roman Script which will be taken care of in subsequent issues. ISBN and ISSN numbers are also assigned in the entries wherever it is mentioned in the document. Arrangement: This bibliography is in three parts- Classified, Author and Title Index and Subject Index respectively. In the classified section entries are arranged by subjects according to the 22nd edition of Dewey Decimal Classification scheme. Full bibliographical information about each title is given in the following order: Decimal Classification Number, author, title and sub-title, statement of responsibility, edition, material of specific details, place of publication, publisher, date of publication, pagination, physical description, dimension, series, notes, standard number (ISBN) or (ISSN), binding, price, language symbol and Colon classification number. Names of authors, titles and other fields in Indian languages are transliterated in to Roman script with diacritical marks and then arranged in one alphabetical order in each class. The language of the book is indicated by symbol as per latest standards given at the left hand bottom comer of each entry. Author and Title Index: If the author of the book or the title is known, look under the name of the author or the title in this part of the index. For full bibliographical details of a book refer to the classified part by means of Dewey Decimal Classification number given at the end of each author entry in the index. Subject Index: To find out books on a particular subject, first locate it in the Subject Index which is separately printed after the Author and Title index and the refer to the Classified part by means of the Dewey Decimal Classification number assigned against each of the subject entries. The abbreviations and their corresponding English equivalents and the language symbols used in the Bibliography with their expansions are given separately. Suggestions for improvement are welcome. Mahavira (Niyamasara, 99) TEMPLES SEVERAL HINDU AND JAIN TEMPLES FACE DEMOLITION IN THE MANGALORE AREA Mangalore, The Supreme Court has stated that 1,201 Hindu and 17 Jain places of worship are currently under threat of being demolished because they are considered to be religious institutions that are located in public places and apparently fall under a list of unauthorized religious construction. Mohan Gowda, Hindu Jana Jagruti Vedike spokesperson stated that the government has decided to go ahead with demolishing this large number of religious structures. The verdict of the Supreme Court clearly states that all religious structures that are built after December 7, 2009 must be demolished and most of these religious structures are Hindu temples across Mangalore. With regards to those places of worship built before December 7, 2009–they will be examined case by case before a decision is made for whether they will become regularized structures, relocated or demolished. A very short notice has been given with no opportunity for appeal and the state government in its affidavit to the Supreme Court has agreed to clear all illegal religious structures by the end of this month. Gowda further stated that although the Supreme Court has allowed for temples that are over 30 years old to be regularized, the Karnataka government is simply seeking to demolish because the process of regularizing will be time consuming and not worth their time.

We may know about the Ramayana and the Mahabharata but may not be aware of the Literature from the South of our country. We also need to have some understanding of this classical literary tradition from the south as the epic under consideration is an ancient Tamil epic belonging to the Sangam Period. We will trace the growth and development of Sangam Literature and then locate the epic under consideration Cilappatikaran. 1.1 INTRODUCTION Indian Literature is a vast area comprising numerous diverse traditions which resulted in a vast and a complex literature in the last 3500 years. Every part of India has produced classical literature in various Indian languages. The literature produced in ancient India includes the Vedic corpus along with the Puranas, the Jain agamas and traditions and the vast literature produced during the Buddhist period which incorporates writings across Asia. The south of India has 4 major languages namely Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam and Telugu. All of them are classical languages with a robust literary tradition and Tamil literary history is of nearly two millennia. Sangam Literature also spelled cankam/ chankam/shangam according to the Encyclopaedia Britannica, refers to a body of ancient Tamil writings probably produced during the “chankams/ literary academies located in Maturai, Tamil Nadu from the 4th to the 1st Century”.

    There Are Literary, Archaeological, Epigraphic and Numismatic Sources of Ancient Tamil History

    HISTORY OF KONGUNADU UPTO 1800 AD UNIT1: SOURCES: There are literary, archaeological, epigraphic and numismatic sources of ancient Tamil history. The foremost among these sources is the Sangam literature, generally dated to 5th century BCE to 3rd century CE. The poems in Sangam literature contain vivid descriptions of the different aspects of life and society in Tamilakam during this age; scholars agree that, for the most part, these are reliable accounts. Greek and Roman literature, around the dawn of the Christian era, give details of the maritime trade between Tamilakam and the Roman empire, including the names and locations of many ports on both coasts of the Tamil country. Archaeological excavations of several sites in Tamil Nadu and Kerala have yielded remnants from the Sangam era, such as different kinds of pottery, pottery with inscriptions, imported ceramic ware, industrial objects, brick structures and spinning whorls. Techniques such as stratigraphy and paleography have helped establish the date of these items to the Sangam era. The excavated artifacts have provided evidence for existence of different economic activities mentioned in Sangam literature such as agriculture, weaving, smithy, gem cutting, building construction, pearl fishing and painting. Inscriptions found on caves and pottery are another source for studying the history of Tamilakam. Writings in Tamil-Brahmi script have been found in many locations in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Sri Lanka and also in Egypt and Thailand.[1] mostly recording grants made by the kings and chieftains. References are also made to other aspects of the Sangam society. Coins issued by the Tamil kings of this age have been recovered from river beds and urban centers of their kingdoms.
