Baldwin, Chair Key evolutionary transitions have shaped the tree of life by driving the processes of spe- ciation and extinction. This dissertation aims to advance statistical and computational ap- proaches that model the timing and nature of these transitions over evolutionary trees. These methodological developments in phylogenetic comparative biology enable formal, model- based, statistical examinations of the macroevolutionary consequences of trait evolution. Chapter 1 presents computational tools for data mining the large-scale molecular sequence datasets needed for comparative phylogenetic analyses. I describe a novel metric, the miss- ing sequence decisiveness score (MSDS), which assesses the phylogenetic decisiveness of a matrix given the pattern of missing sequence data. In Chapter 2, I introduce a class of phylogenetic models of chromosome number evolution that accommodate both anagenetic and cladogenetic change. -

Intro 1996 National List of Vascular Plant Species That Occur in Wetlands The Fish and Wildlife Service has prepared a National List of Vascular Plant Species That Occur in Wetlands: 1996 National Summary (1996 National List). The 1996 National List is a draft revision of the National List of Plant Species That Occur in Wetlands: 1988 National Summary (Reed 1988) (1988 National List). The 1996 National List is provided to encourage additional public review and comments on the draft regional wetland indicator assignments. The 1996 National List reflects a significant amount of new information that has become available since 1988 on the wetland affinity of vascular plants. This new information has resulted from the extensive use of the 1988 National List in the field by individuals involved in wetland and other resource inventories, wetland identification and delineation, and wetland research. Interim Regional Interagency Review Panel (Regional Panel) changes in indicator status as well as additions and deletions to the 1988 National List were documented in Regional supplements. The National List was originally developed as an appendix to the Classification of Wetlands and Deepwater Habitats of the United States (Cowardin et al.1979) to aid in the consistent application of this classification system for wetlands in the field.. The 1996 National List also was developed to aid in determining the presence of hydrophytic vegetation in the Clean Water Act Section 404 wetland regulatory program and in the implementation of the swampbuster provisions of the Food Security Act. While not required by law or regulation, the Fish and Wildlife Service is making the 1996 National List available for review and comment. -

Ludwigia spp. Waterprimroses Family: Onagraceae Range: Primarily in the coastal states, Washington, Oregon and California; creeping waterprimrose is also found in Arizona and New Mexico. Habitat: Slow-flowing rivers, lake and reservoir margins, and in the shallow waters of canals and floodplains. Origin: Most species are native to South America. L. peploides ssp. peploides is native to California, Arizona, New Mexico, Ludwigia peploides Texas, and Louisiana; ssp. glabrescens (Kuntze) Raven is native to the central and eastern U.S.; and ssp. montevidensis (Spreng.) Raven is introduced from southern South America. L. peploides is sometimes sold as an aquarium or pond ornamental. Impacts: Dense stands degrade natural communities, reduce water quality and floodwater retention, and prevent effective mosquito control. Plants can develop a tangled mat of stems that can reduce water flow in irrigation channels and drainage ditches. Western states listed as Noxious Weed: L. grandiflora, Washington California Invasive Plant Council (Cal-IPC) Inventory: L. hexapetala, High Invasiveness (Alert); L. peploides, High Invasiveness Waterprimroses are floating to emergent perennials with stems to 10 ft long. -

MUNZ The genus Hauya, named in honor of Abbe Rene Just Hai.iy, was described by A. P. de Candolle (Prodromus 3: 36, 1828). The first species described, H. elegans, was based on a drawing by Moc;ifi.o and Sesse, no specimens of the plant being available. The next attention given to the genus was by Hemsley (Diag. Pl. Nov., part 1: 13, 1878 and Bot. Bioi. Centr. Am. 1: 462-3, 1880 and 5: pl. 29). He described two additional species. In this country most of the work on the group has been done by J. Donnell Smith and ]. N. Rose; they published an account (Contr. U.S. Nat. Herb. 16: 288-294, 1913) recognizing eleven species. Hauya arborea (Kellogg) Curran was excluded from the genus by Smith and Rose and used as the type species of a new genus Xylonagra. Certain similarities caused them to keep it in the same tribe Hauyeae. I am in agreement with their disposition. The chief differences between Hauya and Xylonagra as given by them were in size of plant, size of flowers, their number and location, and in the type of seeds. -

Medical Research Archives The Vascular Flora of Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge and False Cape State Park, Virginia ABSTRACT The vascular flora of Bay National Wildlife Refuge and False Cape State Park, Virginia consists of 602 species within 343 genera and 123 families. Of these 519 are native (86%) while 83 are not native to the region. Thirty two species are listed as rare or endangered in Virginia including two small populations of Bartonia verna at False Cape State Park found nowhere else in the state. Several species with southern affinities reach their northern range limit on the Back Bay region, whereas only two northern taxa, Hudsonia tomentosa and Myrica pensylvania are near their southern limit. Non-native varieties of Phragmites australis are a major component of the natural vegetation and pose a threat to native taxa. Each taxonomic entry in the checklist is accompanied by an annotation which includes the locality and habitat in which each taxon occurs, frequence of occurrence, range extensions, rarity status, and pertinent synonyms. Progress report 1. Title: Evaluating Epilobium (Zauschneria) canum cultivars for floral traits and attraction of beneficials 2. Accomplishments to date: Below, we summarize accomplishments to date based on our 2 objectives outlined in the proposal: Part 1: Assessment of plant traits and floral visitation using established cultivars Existing plants in the arboretum were chosen with representation from 7 cultivar types (Fig 1). Plants were GPS-located and marked. Data on plant and floral traits including flowering phenology, corolla size, floral density, nectar volume, microbial load and plant size were recorded for each focal plant. Data were recorded and are being analyzed. Visitation observations were taken. Insect collections were also taken for a subset of plants as available. Insects are being sorted and curated for identification. Part 2: Installation of two common gardens Plants from 10 cultivars, mostly non-overlapping with the cultivars currently on campus were purchased from California Flora Nursery and planted on the UC Davis campus (Fig 2). Two replicate plantings were established and a third is in-progress. Plants will be monitored for survival and establishment over the coming months. -
