Wednesday, June 5, 2019 at 4:55:10 PM Brish Summer Time WIMBLEDON UNION OF RESIDENTS’ ASSOCIATIONS Newsletter 46 Farmers’ Market in Wimbledon Village It is wonderful to hear how successful the farmers’ market is. It is being held every Sunday in the car park in front of Wimbledon Village Surgery from 10.00am until 2.00pm It is so popular that the Wimbledon Village Business Association is looking to assist the organiser in expanding the market to other areas of the village. Heathrow Expansion Local residents have reported a greater incidence of aircraft flying over Wimbledon. Does anyone know why this should be? We need to be ready to object to all efforts by Heathrow to expand their operations to the detriment of people living within a 20 mile radius of it. We all need to get better informed ready for the next round of consultations and WURA will be seeking speakers to address the AGMs the various Residents’ Associations and we may well need larger public meetings. In the last 2 months there has been a significant increase in the number of flights taking off directly above West Wimbledon and we are aware that this is a concern for many residents. This change is too soon to be part of the changes that are proposed following the introduction of ‘parallel landing’. The Heathrow web site provides an explanation of how routes can be varied consistent with currently approved flight paths in its page on departures. It says “Aircraft taking off from Heathrow follow pre-defined routes, known as Standard Instrument Departures routes (SIDs). The choice of SID used is decided by the airline and is predominately dictated by the destination of the aircraft. Due to the fact that all aircraft perform differently and may be affected by weather conditions which can cause them to drift left or right, there will be some variation as to where different aircraft will fly relative to the centreline of the SID. For this reason, when the SIDs were designed in the 1960s by the Department for Transport (DfT), the Government Page 1 of 11 set corridors, known as Noise Preferential Routes (NPRs), which extend 1.5 kilometres either side of the SID route centreline. There are 6 NPRs on easterly and westerly operations: Aircraft don’t have to follow the centreline of the SID precisely, they just have to be within the 3km wide NPR up to 4,000ft.” West Wimbledon is in one of the 6 NPRs used on easterly operations. On this Heathrow page you can see that it is to the south of the centre line of one of the six permitted NPRs. which it seems planes have previously been more likely to stay closer to. We are not aware of any reason having been given for this change but it might not be wise to suffer in silence. If you would like to register a complaint about aircraft noise you can do so by emailing [email protected] or comment online at https://www.heathrow.com/noise/what-you-can-do/make-a-complaint-about-noise If you email we suggest you copy the email to Stephen Hammond at [email protected] . We are advised that complaints about specific incidents that appear particularly noisy or are after 11.30pm (which is the time by which departures should finish) might be the most effective.
