Stewardship Commitment Sunday Is November

Stewardship Commitment Sunday Is November

Over the last several weeks, we have shared with you about the stewardship way of life in preparation for our Requesting Stewards for Vibrant Parish (RSVP) initiative for 2019. We have ofLicially embarked on RSVP and now is the time for you to begin considering all your stewardship pledges together so that you may best live the stewardship way of life in 2019. As you do this, you are challenged to prayerfully consider what we have shared with you in relation to your baptismal call to live the stewardship way of life as a mis- sionary and your capability to fulLill stewardship commitments. SpeciLic to your pledges to pray and participate, the 2019 Stewardship Directory, which you should have received at your home earlier this month, would be a good reference as you discern your pledges.

Parishioners at St. seek closeness with God through a prayerful commitment to stewardship. We believe all that we have is gifted from God. As missionary disciples of Christ, we commit to pray, to participate, and to give. We carry out our promises with such faithfulness and love that our church and school are fully alive!

A Prayer for Veterans Dear God,

You have called your people to many walks of life.

Some like St. Francis were called to a life of peace and others to the life of a soldier and warrior. David, the Maccabees, Sts. Joan, George and Marn all were called by you to take up arms in the service and protecon of their cizens.

On this day, bless those who have given their me, talents, and in some cases their lives, to protect our freedoms. Guide them in their tours of duty. Comfort the wounded and their families. Remind us to appreciate their sacrifices.

Amen.

StThomasWichita.com | Page 5 Did you know? What is the Christian attitude towards violent conflicts? In the Beatudes, Jesus teaches us "Blessed are the peacemakers" and to "love your enemies." All human beings are made in God's image and likeness. We are one human family -- brothers and sisters despite what divides us. Chrisans have the obligaon to priorize peaceful means to resolve conflicts. War wreaks a toll on a naon. Civilians bear a disproporonate burden of this cost during the war itself and as the naon rebuilds. However, those in authority have the obligaon to pro- tect the innocent.

During the gradual fall of the Roman Empire, theologians began to theorize that war could be just if it was a defensive measure of last resort. The "Just War Theory" was later expanded by St. Thomas Aquinas, who also included moral obliga- ons during the war itself, including the protecon of civilians. Those in public authority have the obligaon to carefully examine their moves, agendas, and raonale for violent force. Should a cause be just, those who fight and defend under such circumstances must be valued and honored. They deserve our support both during and a er the war. How do we attain beatitude? We aain beatude by virtue of the grace of Christ which makes us parcipants in the divine life. Christ in the Gospel points out to his followers the way that leads to eternal happiness: the beatudes. The grace of Christ also is operave in every person who, following a correct conscience, seeks and loves the true and the good and avoids evil. Service

Health Tip What is shingles and should I get vaccinated? Shingles is an extremely painful rash, usually on one side of the upper body or face, caused by chickenpox viruses “stored” in the body for decades a er chickenpox infecon. It can have disastrous results, such as permanent vision loss, and can cause dangerous chickenpox in unvaccinated babies.

The recently approved new vaccinaon, a two-dose series, is much more effecve at prevenng shingles than the first ver- sion. It is recommended for most adults 50 or older, even all those who had the first version, and is now covered by most insurance. Talk with your physician about prevenng this terrible disease. Blood Pressure Clinic Members of the Health and Wellness Apostolate will be in the Church Library a er all Masses next weekend to check blood pressure. Parish Service Hour Opportunities Visit the S.O. Board on the Parish website for upcoming Parish service hour opportunies. KMC service hours are due De- cember 7.

Stewardship Bit 1 Kgs 17: 10-16 / Heb 9: 24-28 / Mk 12: 38-44 Have you ever thanked someone for an act of kindness, only to have them respond with, "It was nothing"? It is a funny response, because to you the act was obviously more than nothing! Why do we say that?? Perhaps it is because the act seemed trivial, and not worth menoning. Compare this to the offerings of the widow in today's first reading. asked for bread and she said she had none to share. She had only a "handful of flour" and a lile oil in her jug, and seemed ashamed that she could not offer him more. Maybe she is right -- her offering is a bit meager. But she gave what she had, and Elijah took what she offered. She gave ALL. In return for her selfless gi , God provided her with a boomless jar of flour and a lifeme supply of oil. The lesson here is that no gi of self is too small. Give what you have and let God be the judge of its value -- I can assure you He will not see it as "nothing!" And the next me someone thanks you, don't brush off your act as something small and meaningless -- because to them it could have made all the difference.

Tobit Apostolate We are excited to announce the establishment of a new parish Apostolate, called “Tobit”. Which falls under the Prayer & Worship Pillar of Stewardship.
