Quinn: The Practice of Rebaptism at Nauvoo the practice of rebaptism at nauvoo D michael quinn until recently on the rare occasions when rebaptism has been mentioned in LDS histories the central incident has been the re- baptism of brigham young and his fellow apostles in the salt lake valley on 6 august 1847 all chroniclers of that event have left the impression that this was the first occasion in mormonism where rebaptism for renewal of covenants was practiced 1 the one author who acknowledges that the practice of rebaptism existed during the lifetime of joseph smith also limited that practice to two functions 1 those who were baptized for remission of sins prior to 1830 and who were rebaptized as members of the church once it was organized on 6 april 1830 and 2 some members of the church who were in transgression were again baptized with- out first having lost their membership by excommunication 2 on the other hand a recent scholarly history of the LDS church has noted for many years in the nineteenth century it had been common for members to rededicate themselves to building up the kingdom through rebaptism this practice was not considered essential to sal- vation but was a symbol of rededication on other occasions the saints were rebaptized as a symbolic gesture related to blessings for their health entry into the united order preparation for marriage and even for going to the temple if they had not been there for some time 3 As we study the records and journals we find this latter statement an accurate general description of rebaptism among the latter day NEW ecclesiastical relationship the earliest suggestion of rebaptism in LDS history was in the 1830 book of mormon description of the righteous nephitesNephites being rebaptized at the command of the resurrected christ when he visited them 4 then although joseph smith and oliver cow- dery had baptized themselves and others for remission of sins for nearly a year prior to the organization of the church in 1830 the previously baptized followers of joseph smith were again baptized as members of the newly organized church of christ 5 these two examples have been described as necessary ordinances to introduce gospel followers into a new church organization 6 although the documents are fragmentary there is evidence that during the nauvoo period of the church previously baptized latter day saints were baptized again when they moved from a dis- tant branch of the church to the nauvoo area between 1841 and 18184343 for example ten members of the church who moved to the nashville iowa branch were added to the branch by being rebabrebap tizedsized 7 the specific reason for this rebaptism is not indicated it might have been an absence of records proving their prior bap- tism or it might have been that the newly arrived saints wished to demonstrate their rededication after making a long journey to the new branch REBAPTISM FOR reformation AND REMISSION OF SINS the earliest known case in which a person was rebaptized be- cause he felt that he had faltered in his original baptismal com- mitmitmentsments was on 7 may 1832 on that date david johnson re- quested and received during the nauvoo years rebaptism for reformation and remission of sins was general among the latter day saints william claytonsclaytonaclaytons journal indicated that rebaptism for remis- sion of sins was practiced at nauvoo after joseph smith had re- marked on the subject at april 1841 conference 9 however the be- ginning of a general nauvoo reformation can be dated from the remarks of hyrum smith to the nauvoo high council on 18 jan- uary 1842 that there was a general want of action in the church that he wanted every one to start anew 10 during the af- ternoon meeting on sunday I11 may 1842 the authorities at nauvoo expanded this into a call for a reformation within the church by that time the church at nauvoo had become em- broiled in rumors and disclosures about unauthorized sexual activi- ties wherein men like john C bennett chauncey and francis higbee william smith and others had exploited numerous wo- men under the guise of spiritual liferywifery 12 although bennett and others were disfellowshipdisfellowshippedped or excommunicated for this unautho- rized conduct the effect of the situation was such that many were urged to be rebaptized as indicated when dissident church mem- ber oliver H olney wrote on 27 july 1842 that when they do wrong they get rebaptized they then stand fair in the sight of god altho they have done ever so bad this is the theme amongst those that are a wallowing in the mire 13 most of the latter day saints who were rebaptized for remis- sion of sins during the nauvoo period were not receiving this or- dinance for what was regarded as gross misconduct but instead for a personal reformation and remission of those sins which the ancient apostle john said were part of the human condition 14 sur- viving certificates of     Heroes and Heroines: Orrin Porter Rockwell By Lawrence Cummins Lawrence Cummins, “Orrin Porter Rockwell,” Friend, May 1984, 42 Listening to the Prophet Joseph Smith tell the story of the angel and the hidden plates, young Porter Rockwell’s adventurous nature was stirred. The Smiths and Rockwells, frontier neighbors in Manchester, New York, often visited each other. Although Porter was eight years younger than the Prophet, a bond of friendship between the two was quickly formed. Later, when Joseph needed money to publish The Book of Mormon, Porter picked berries by moonlight—after his chores were done—and sold them. When there were no berries to pick, he gathered wood and hauled it to town to sell. The money he earned was given to the Prophet. The two families remained loyal to each other, and when the Smiths moved to Fayette, New York, the Rockwells followed. Sixteen­year­old Porter was probably the youngest member of the first group to be baptized into the Church, after it was organized in 1830. When the Fayette Branch of the Church moved to Kirtland, Ohio, Porter went with them. However, his stay there was short. Porter was sent with the first group of Saints to Jackson County, Missouri, the intended central gathering place for members of the Church. The elders often met at Porter’s home to discuss ways of protecting the Saints from the lawless Missouri mobs who were persecuting them. While he was in Missouri, Porter became a crack marksman with a gun. And he made several trips to Liberty Jail to take food and comfort to Joseph Smith and his counselors when they had been illegally jailed.

Walker: Letters of Lucy Millikin and Katharine Salisbury 165 Katharine Smith Salisbury and Lucy Smith Millikin’s Attitudes Toward Succession, the Reorganized Church, and Their Smith Relatives in Utah Kyle R. Walker Several letters have emerged in recent years that reflect Smith family members’ attitudes concerning the succession question. It is well known that Emma Hale Smith, Lucy Mack Smith, and William Smith stayed behind when most of the Saints made their epic trek west, and there exists materi- al documenting their respective views toward succession following the mar- tyrdom.1 However, little has been written about the rest of the Smith fami- ly—the three Smith sisters—who stayed in Illinois following the deaths of their brothers and the migration of the Saints to the West. The two follow- ing documents shed light on the attitudes of two of the three sisters of the Prophet, Katharine Smith Salisbury, and Lucy Smith Millikin. The letters serve to illuminate the sisters’ disposition toward Brigham Young and the Utah Saints, the Reorganized Church following the 1860 organization, and their Smith relatives who went west. Katharine Smith Salisbury and Lucy Smith Millikin Katharine Smith Salisbury, the second daughter and seventh surviving child of Joseph Sr., and Lucy Mack Smith, was born 28 July 1813, in Lebanon, Grafton County, New Hampshire.2 She was an eyewitness to many important events of the Restoration, including hefting the covered gold plates after Joseph had brought them into the Smith home.3 Shortly after KYLE R.     The Prophet Elias Puzzle Samuel Brown JJ,arly Mormonism is notable for a proliferation of angels, scriptural lumi- naries who visited the Prophet Joseph Smith and his close associates. These visitations not only established prophetic authority generally but were also often associated with specific innovations, rites, and doctrines. Thus, Moroni delivered the Book of Mormon, John the Baptist bestowed the lesser priesthood, and a triumvirate of Christian apostles granted the higher priesthood. Perhaps most important in this august pantheon is Eli- jah, the biblical patriarch who ascended living to heaven (was translated) as a reward for exemplary faithfulness. For early Mormons, Elijah shouldered a burdensome mission: to oversee LDS temple rites and integrate the hu- man family into an organic whole, sealing up personal relationships against death. This seemingly pluripotent Elijah is shadowed by a doppelganger in the angelic tumult of early Mormonism named Elias, the King James ren- dering of the Greek transliteration of the prophet's Hebrew name. This Elias, according to Joseph Smith, was present at Christ's transfiguration and its Kirtland Temple reenactment and plays an important if confusing role in Restoration events. Furthermore, Elias was distinct from Elijah, as Smith confirmed in his 1844 sermon: "[I] preached on the subject of the spirit of /Elias/ Elijah, and Mesiah clearly defining the offices of the 3 personages." This paper explores the significance of this Elijah-Elias bifurcation, seen by critics as emblematic of Smith's imaginative if inaccurate appro- priation of the biblical lexicon. Writers from within Mormonism have his- torically focused, with precedent in the Prophet's teachings, on a "Spirit of Elias" borne by various angelic ministrants while positing the existence of a minor but essentially unknown prophet actually named Elias who stays away from center stage.

This promised outpouring served as a reward for early obedience and a catalyst for further blessings described finally as “an infinity of fulness” (D&C 38:32–33; 105:9–12; 109:77). An abundant historical record affirms and embodies this remarkable endowment of divine power.1 The richest documents—the contemporary writ- ings of eyewitnesses—are reproduced in this chapter. They are pub- lished here together as a collective testimony of the fulfillment of divine promises to reward righteousness and sacrifice by the bestowal of spiritual gifts, ministering angels, and restoration of priesthood keys to endow the faithful with power, “so,” in the words of Joseph Smith, “that satan cannot over throw us, nor have any power over us.”2 1.
