KLOS Aug. 10Th 2014 1 EVERY OTHER SONG…A PAUL SONG IN HONOR OF TONIGHTS SOLD-OUT DODGER STADIUM SHOW 2 9AM LIVE FROM KOBE STEAKHOUSE SEAL BEACH Paul McCartney – I Lost My Little Girl (Lennon/McCartney) – The Beatles - I’ll Be Back - A Hard Day’s Night (Lennon-McCartney) Lead vocal: John Recorded in 16 takes on June 1, 1964. “I'll Be Back” was written mostly by John Lennon, and was a reworking of the chords to Del Shannon's 1961 hit “Runaway.” Beatles fans in America would have to wait five months to hear this exquisite Beatles song, one of 3 Lennon finest compositions, because Capitol Records held it off their “Something New” album and released it on “Beatles ‘65” in December 1964. On U.S. album: Beatles ‘65 - Capitol LP The Beatles - Things We Said Today - A Hard Day’s Night (Lennon-McCartney) Lead vocal: Paul Written in May 1964 on board a yacht called Happy Days during Paul McCartney's holiday in the Virgin Islands with his girlfriend Jane Asher, plus Ringo Starr and his future wife Maureen. Recorded in three takes on June 2, 1964. In his 1980 interview with Playboy magazine John Lennon remembered this being one of Paul’s better songs. McCartney double tracked his vocals. John Lennon's piano part was meant to be omitted from the final mix, but lack of separation between instruments meant that its sound leaked into other microphones during recording. As a result it can be heard on the released version. The b-side of the UK “A Hard Day’s Night” single. On U.S. album: Something New - Capitol LP 4 The Beatles - Ticket To Ride - Help! (Lennon-McCartney) Lead vocals: John and Paul The Beatles’ ninth single release for EMI’s Parlophone label. Issued nearly four months prior to the “Help!” album’s release on July 19, 1965 in the U.S. and four days later in the UK. Recorded on February 15, 1965 and featuring a blistering lead guitar performance by Paul McCartney. John and Paul composed the song together based primarily on John’s idea. The song’s distinctive drum pattern was conceived by Paul. The complex song arrangement was highly innovative for the time, and certainly unlike anything being played on top 40 radio. John Lennon in 1970: “ ‘Ticket To Ride was slightly a new sound at the time. It was pretty heavy for then, if you go and look in the charts for what other music people were making. It's a heavy record and the drums are heavy too. That's why I like it.” McCartney said, “It was quite radical at the time.” Capitol Records printed “From the United Artists release ‘Eight Arms To Hold You’ ” on both sides of the single. On U.S. album: Help! - Capitol LP Every other song sung by Paul this morning 9.12 BREAK Every other song sung by Paul this morning The Beatles - For No One - Revolver 5 (Lennon-McCartney) Lead vocal: Paul Written entirely by Paul in March 1966 while on vacation with then-girlfriend Jane Asher at the Swiss ski resort of Klosters. The backing track was recorded in 10 takes on May 9, 1966 with only Paul (piano) and Ringo (drums) present. John and George do not perform on this song. Overdubs included Paul on clavichord, and Ringo on cymbals and maracas. Paul’s lead vocal was recorded on May 16. The baroque-style French horn solo was credited to Alan Civil and recorded on May 19. Ringo’s original drum part was removed from the track in the reduction mixdown. The song was originally called “Why Did It Die?” Paul: “I was in Switzerland on my first skiing holiday. I'd done a bit of skiing in ‘Help!’ and quite liked it, so I went back and ended up in a little bathroom in a Swiss chalet writing ‘For No One.’ I remember the descending bass line trick that it's based on, and I remember the character in the song - the girl putting on her make-up.” The Beatles - I Don’t Want To Spoil The Party - Beatles For Sale (Lennon-McCartney) Lead vocal: John and Paul Written primarily by John, who called it one of his favorites. Recorded in 19 takes (only five of which were complete run-throughs) on September 29, 1964. The B-side of the “Eight Days A Week” single in the U.S., issued February 15, 1965. On U.S. album: Beatles VI - Capitol LP 6 Paul & Linda McCartney - Another Day Also written around the “Let it Be” sessions, this was a similar narrative to Eleanor Rigby, again dealing with a lonely woman. This was specifically referenced in John’s “How Do You Sleep” on the Imagine album. The Beatles - Taxman - Revolver (Harrison) Lead vocal: George Completed in 11 takes on April 21, 1966. Written by George when he started realizing the majority of his money was going to the British government in the form of taxes. George went to John Lennon for some help with the lyrics, and Lennon was especially pleased with his line “Now my advice for those who die: declare the pennies on your eyes.” Featuring a nice lead guitar solo by Paul on his Epiphone Casino. The ‘pennies’ lyrical reference derives from Greek mythology – it is the payment to Charon (the ferryman of the underworld) to ferry the deceased to their destination in the underworld. To pay the ferryman, the deceased person's relatives place a coin on each eye of the deceased. The Mr. Wilson and Mr. Heath mentioned in the song were real people. Harold Wilson was the Prime Minister and Edward Heath was head of the opposition party at the time the song was recorded. It is the first time a George Harrison composition opens a British Beatles album. On U.S. album: 7 Revolver - Capitol LP QUICK BREAK HERE The Beatles - Blackbird - The Beatles (Lennon-McCartney) Lead vocal: Paul Another Paul McCartney solo performance for the “White Album.” Paul wrote “Blackbird” at his Scottish farm house and the song was started and finished in 32 takes, 11 being complete run-throughs of the song, on June 10, 1968. Paul has said the music was inspired by Bach’s “Bourree in E Minor,” which he learned to play at a young age. The tapping sound on the recording is not a metronome. The percussion-like sound keeping the beat is actually Paul tapping his foot on the studio floor, which was separately miked onto one of the tracks. Paul has since revealed that the song was a message of solidarity to black people living in the U.S. “Blackbird” is one of only five Beatles songs Paul chose to perform live during his “Wings Over America” concert tour in 1976. 8 The Beatles - Across The Universe - Let It Be (Lennon-McCartney) Lead vocal: John Prior to leaving for an extended trip to India to study Transcendental Meditation in early 1968, the Beatles recorded several new songs to fill the sides of their upcoming single, which would be released while they were away. John had originally wanted his new composition, “Across The Universe,” for the A-side of the single but was still not happy with the mix of the song. When the Beatles sat down to decide which two of their new recordings should be used, John preferred “Across the Universe” remain on the shelf for the time being, giving Paul’s more commercial “Lady Madonna” the A-side. “Across The Universe” was written entirely by John and was recorded February 4, 1968, in eight takes. Overdubs were recorded on February 8. The Beatles - You Never Give Me Your Money - Abbey Road (Lennon-McCartney) Lead vocal: Paul The famous “Abbey Road” medley begins with Paul’s “You Never Give Me Your Money,” a song which itself consists of three segments. In Barry Miles’ “Many Years From Now,” McCartney states that the first part of the song was him “directly lambasting Allen Klein’s attitude to us: no money, just funny paper, all promises and it never works out. It’s basically a song about no faith in the person.” The reference to “funny paper” was the numerous bank statements and other official looking documents that claimed they had stocks and bonds or money in various bank accounts, but to the band members it always seemed imaginary; they were rich on paper. 9 9.42 BREAK The Beatles - Tell Me Why - A Hard Day’s Night (Lennon-McCartney) Lead vocal: John Completed in eight takes on February 27, 1964 in between “And I Love Her” and “If I Fell.” “Tell Me Why” was written primarily by John and was his attempt to mimic the New York girl group sound The Beatles were so fond of. On U.S. album: A Hard Day’s Night - United Artists LP Something New - Capitol LP The Beatles - Can’t Buy Me Love - A Hard Day’s Night (Lennon-McCartney) Lead vocal: Paul The Beatles’ sixth single release for EMI’s Parlophone label. 10 During their 19-day engagement at Paris’s Olympia Theatre The Beatles took time out to record German-language versions for two of their biggest hits. “I Want to Hold Your Hand” and “She Loves You” were chosen to get new vocals to increase sales in the German market. This was at the insistence of EMI’s German branch, Odeon, which felt they couldn’t sell large quantities of records unless they were sung in German. With less than an hour left on their booked recording time, The Beatles recorded four takes of a new song by Paul, “Can’t Buy Me Love.” Issued in the U.S.

Jim-2020 Our story of creation was written at a time of the Babylonian Captivity when Israel’s captors were making fun of them and their God. The Babylonian story of creation involved war and spilling of blood to create life out of death, whereas in our story of Creation, no blood was spilled to create, but God’s very own blood was spilled in death to bring life and to redeem creation. Our theology and this story of creation is said to have evolved out of the worship experience. Faith and experience of God come first and theology follows upon reflection on that faith and experience. We Anglicans call this the law of praying is the law of believing. Looking at our worship and our members I experience a theology of joy, tears, questions, laughter and love and you have become a permanent part of the fabric of my faith.

  • Paul Mccartney, 1980-1999
Paul McCartney from Wings through the 90's McCartney II Columbia FC‐36511 May 21, 1980 About ten years after recording McCartney by himself, Paul got several songs together and recorded them‐‐again alone‐‐on somewhat of a lark. Then Paul embarked on his ill‐fated 1980 tour of Japan (which resulted in his being jailed for drug possession). After returning to the safety of his own home, he was urged to release the album, and he did. The album contrasts well with McCartney, for this second production contains numerous instruments and electronic tricks that were not present on the 1970 release. Side One is particularly interesting. The solo version of "Coming Up" is followed by the fun track, "Temporary Secretary" (released as a single in England). The almost‐lament, "On the Way," is then succeeded by "Waterfalls," Paul's second (US) single from the album. "Bogey Music," from Side Two, is also a standout. John Lennon heard a song from McCartney II and thought that Paul sounded sad. When the album was released in the US, a bonus one‐sided single ‐‐ the hit version of "Coming Up"‐‐was included with the LP. This hit was enough to propel the album to the #3 position on the charts, during a time when disco was now on the wane. "Waterfalls" Columbia 1‐11335 Jul. 22, 1980 The lovely ballad about protectiveness was one of the standouts from McCartney II. After "Coming Up," it received the most airplay and the most positive response from Paul's friends. As a single, though, the song fared poorly, only reaching #83...one of Paul's worst showings to date.

Starting with the songs recorded for their debut album on February 11, 1963, Lennon and McCartney’s output was attached to their Northern Songs publishing company. Because their first single was released before John and Paul had contracted with a music publisher, EMI assigned it to their own, a company called Ardmore and Beechwood, which took the two songs “Love Me Do” and “P.S.
