Rose Hall, Home of Jazz at Lincoln Center, in New York City on December 8, 2010. Hosted by ASCAP Foundation President, Paul Williams, the event honored vocal legend Tony Bennett and his wife, Susan Benedetto, with The ASCAP Foundation Champion Award in recognition of their unique and significant efforts in arts education. ALTERNATIVE FORMATS: None OTHER FINDING AIDS: None LOCATION: Archives Scope Note This collection includes approximately 750 individual pieces of sheet music, booklets and books copyrighted from 1870 through 1968. A few are encapsulated and may appear in displays in the People or Politics room on the Museum’s first floor. Sheet music also is sometimes featured in temporary, but long-running, displays. People who lived in (or once lived in) McLean County donated most, if not all, of the individual sheets, booklets and books of music that represent the 90 years of music listed in this collection. The first section (Box 1, Folders 1 through 6) is devoted to music that has a direct connection to McLean County. Other sections in Box 1 include music with Chicago connections as well as other places in Illinois, a few other states and Canada, as well as cultural and subject-related music. Dance and instrumental music (with or without vocal) make up the bulk of Box 2 along with a listing and some sheet music by Irving Berlin and Walt Disney. Five folders (10, 11, 15, 16, and 17) are devoted to German instrumental music. -

“I’m Doin’ It for Defense”: Messages of American Popular Song to Women during World War II A thesis submitted to the Graduate School of the University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of MASTER OF MUSIC in the Division of Composition, Musicology, and Theory of the College-Conservatory of Music 2013 by Amy Brooks BM, Bob Jones University, 2008 Committee Chair: bruce d. mcclung, PhD Abstract World War II presented many new opportunities for American women. In this time of need, they were called upon to take an active part in the war effort, whether by means of working in a factory, growing a victory garden, or serving as a volunteer for wartime organizations. Women made great strides forward in areas such as the workforce and the military. The American popular song industry promoted these new roles for women. I have compiled over 150 songs from 1940 to1945 that relate to women’s roles during the World War II era. Of these songs, I have chosen a select number of songs that best demonstrate popular culture’s attitudes and actions towards women during the war. These songs can be divided into five categories: women in the military, women in the workforce, women’s war effort, women’s responsibilities to men in uniform, and women in the immediate post-war period. I have studied the representative songs by considering their lyrics to identify the objectives supported by the popular song industry. I took into consideration the venues in which they were presented and how these performances influenced their reception. -

Historical continuity and consciousness of African spirituality within the development of Black feminism are analyzed alongside the musical practices of two Black female musicians, Nina Simone and Me’shell Ndegéocello. Simone and Ndegéocello, The High Priestess of Soul and the Mother of Neo-Soul, respectively, distend the commodified confines of Black music and identity by challenging the established norms of music and knowledge production. -

I understand that my thesis may be made electronically available to the public. ii Abstract As a period of American History, the 1960s has provided historians and academics with a wealth of material for research and scholarship. Presidents John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson and Richard Nixon, the Vietnam War, the hippie era, and the Civil Rights Movement, among other topics have received thorough historical discussion and debate. Music was another key aspect in understanding the social history of the 1960s. But unlike the people and events mentioned above, historians have devoted less attention to music in the historical landscape. The British Invasion was one such key event that impacted America in the 1960s. Bands such as the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and the Who found their way into the United States and majorly impacted American society. Using secondary sources, newspaper articles, interviews and documentaries on these bands, this thesis explores the British Invasion and its influence in the context of 1960s America. This thesis explores multiple bands that came in the initial wave. It follows these bands from 1964-1969, and argues that the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and the Who shared common multiple factors that allowed them to attain the traction to succeed and to maintain that success in the United States. -

The ASCAP Foundation Making music grow since 1975 www.ascapfoundation.org Spring 2010 Notations Paul Williams Elected To Presidency of The ASCAP Foundation The Board of Directors of The ASCAP Foundation recently elected songwriter Paul Williams President of the Foundation. Williams was also elected President and Chairman of the Board of ASCAP (the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers) in 2009. Williams succeeds Marilyn Bergman as President of the Foundation. Bergman served in that post for 15 years during which time she contributed significantly to the growth and stature of the Foundation. She remains an active member of The ASCAP Foundation Board. Paul Williams Paul Williams is an Oscar, Grammy and Golden Globe winning Hall of Fame songwriter. "We've Only Just Begun," "Rainy Days and Mondays," "You and Me Against the World," "An Old Fashioned Love Song," "I Won't Last a Day Without You" and "Let Me Be The One" are among his timeless standards. His songs have been recorded by such diverse musical icons as Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Willie Nelson, Ella Fitzgerald, David Bowie, Ray Charles, R.E.M., Tony Bennett, Sarah Vaughan, Johnny Mathis, Luther Vandross and Kermit the Frog. Bugsy Malone and Phantom of the Paradise are among his song scores for film. "The Rainbow Connection" from the children's classic The Muppet Movie and "Evergreen" from A Star is Born are two of his songs that grace the American Film Institute's list of the top 100 movie songs of all times. Having completed the music and lyrics for the Garry Marshall musical Happy Days, Williams joined forces with the Jim Paul Williams (far right) with ASCAP CEO John Henson Company to produce a new musical based on the LoFrumento (left) and the 2009 recipient of The perennial favorite, Emmet Otter's Jugband Christmas. -
