With the longest head coaching tenure at Wright State, Davis has seen the women's athletic program grow from its inaugural stages to its move to Division I in 1987. Davis began her career at Wright State in 1976 as softball coach, a position she held through the 1983 season. Later that year, basketball duties were added, and she became the second women's basketball coach in Wright State's history. Davis coached the basketball and softball teams on a part-time basis before signing on full time at the start of the 1978-79 season. After having endured two losing marks and a .500 year in her first three seasons, Davis has reeled off winning records in eight of the last nine seasons. Included in that time span is a 92-49 ledger over the past five years. Davis guided the 1986-87 Raider team to its first-ever NCAA tournament with a record-setting 24-6 mark. Davis was endowed in 1987 with Great Lakes Region Coach-of-the-Year honors following her most productive season ever. Last season's 17-11 mark was Davis's fifth consecutive winning season at Wright State. Coach Davis received her Bachelor of Arts degree in physical education from Ohio Wesleyan University and completed her master's degree in education at Xavier University. Ohio Wesleyan honored her in the fall of 1978 by naming her to the university's Athletic Hall of Fame. Davis was enshrined in the Hall for her many accomplishments, including 16 varsity letters earned on the athletic fields of Ohio Wesleyan. Davis earned four letters each in volleyball, basketball, softball, and field hockey. A native of Cedarville and a resident of Bellbrook, Ohio, Davis is active in raising and racing harness horses during the off season. MARVIN GROSS Assistant Coach Third Year After returning to his alma mater three years ago, Marvin Gross has helped guide the women's basketball team from a very successful Division II campaign to a winning Division I program. In his first season, the Raiders posted a record-setting mark and found themselves in the Division II NCAA Great Lakes Regional tournament for the first time in the program's existence. His responsibilities off the court include counseling, academic advising, and recruiting. Gross is also involved in counseling programs with other Wright State athletic teams. In the spring, his duties turn to the tennis court as the Raiders men's coach. Gross spent a year as a graduate assistant coach for the men's basketball program at West Georgia College in Carrollton, Georgia, before returning to Wright State. While at West Georgia College, Gross completed work towards a master's degree in psychology with an emphasis in sports psychology. Gross was also a full-time manager of the Racquet and Fitness Club of Carrollton. While teaching health and physical education at Oneida Baptist Institute of Oneida, Kentucky, he coached the boys' varsity basketball team. Gross has also worked in group counseling situations with juvenile delinquents at Oesterlen Services for Youth in Springfield, Ohio. A resident of Bellbrook, Ohio, Gross earned his Bachelor of Science degree in rehabilitation counseling from Wright State in 1983. JANET EMERSON Assistant Coach Second Year Janet Emerson made the move from player to coach last season and begins her second year in an instructing role for the Raiders. A 1987 second-team All-America selection by Fast Break magazine, Emerson led the Raiders to a 24-6 record-setting season and a first-ever NCAA tournament bid. Joining the team as a walk-on, Emerson saw limited action until her senior year, when she wreaked havoc on the record books. She has played the most games and minutes in a season of any Raider and also holds the mark for the most free throws made (105) and most free throws attempted (134). Despite limited playing time her first three years, Emerson's name is listed in the Top 10 of 12 individual career records. Emerson, a resident of Beavercreek, graduated in June 1988 with a Bachelor of Science degree in human factors psychology.
