GODINOS.COM 7 2012-13 DINOS WOMEN’S BASKETBALL 2013 CIS Women’s Basketball Final 8 • Regina 2012-13 GAME RECAPS Playoff games and games vs. potential Final 8 opponents Canada West Final: Regina at Calgary (Mar. 2, 2013 at Jack Simpson Gymnasium, Calgary) COUGARS STYMIE DINOS TO CAPTURE CONFERENCE TITLE

CALGARY – Posting a stifling defensive effort, the University of captured their second Canada West championship Saturday night with a 53-37 win over the University of Calgary Dinos in the Jack Simpson Gym.

The Cougars won this game with their defence, allowing 20 points in the first half and holding Calgary to just 17 in the second half while the U of R offence started to click in the third quarter.

The victory gives the Cougars their first Canada West banner since defeating UBC on their home court to win the 2004 conference title. Both Calgary and Regina will play in the CIS Final 8 March 15-17 hosted at the University of Regina.

Lindsay Ledingham and Kehlsie Crone both led the Cougars with 11 points, while Brittany Read scored nine and led all players with 14 rebounds. Crone also tied her career high with nine rebounds, falling just short of the double-double.

Jessica Franz had 15 points and 11 rebounds to notch the game's lone double-double for Calgary, while Alex Cole helped out with 11 points and nine rebounds.

"Clearly we're disappointed, but I'm absolutely proud of the achievement of my players and their committment to a style of play and character that represents the Dinos so passionately," said Dinos head coach Damian Jennings. "This team enjoys working hard to be better, and I have no doubt the next two weeks will be a lot of fun as we diligently prepare for nationals."

After a low-scoring first half that saw the two teams combine for a total of just 43 points over the first 20 minutes, the Cougars came out strong to open the second half. They held Calgary off the scoreboard for the first 4:36 of the third quarter as part of a 10-0 run that saw them build up their first double-digit lead of the game.

Regina's third-quarter lead reached as many as 17 points after a Jennilea Coppola free throw, as the Dinos were held without a field goal for the first 8:51 of the quarter. Calgary scored the last five points of the quarter to cut the lead to 41-29 heading into the fourth, but the Cougars got those right back in the fourth as Read connected on a layup and Crone drilled a baseline triple to put the U of R back up by 17.

The Cougars continued the tough defence down the stretch, limiting Calgary to eight points in the fourth quarter to nail down the victory.

Canada West Semifinal: Alberta at Calgary (Mar. 1, 2013 at Jack Simpson Gymnasium, Calgary) DINOS PUNCH TICKET TO NATIONALS AFTER COMEBACK WIN

CALGARY – The No. 5-ranked University of Calgary Dinos didn't lead until the fourth quarter, but were able to stave off an upset bid by the Alberta Pandas with a 66-56 victory on Friday night in a Canada West semi-final game at the Jack Simpson Gymnasium.

The Dinos advance to their first Canada West championship game since 2001 and will take on the Regina Cougars Saturday night for the conference title. Tip-off goes at 7 p.m. in the Jack as the Dinos search for the eighth Canada West title in program history. Importantly, the win also qualified the Dinos for the CIS Final 8 March 15-17 in Regina.

Jessica Franz had a big game for the Dinos, scoring a game-high 23 points and adding nine rebounds to fall just short of a double-double. Megan Schaufele added 15 points while Tamara Jarrett chipped in with 12 for the Dinos, who improve their postseason record to 3-0.

Sally Hillier led Alberta with 11 points.

The Dinos had to mount a major comeback after going down by 15 points in the opening half, but they took control late to emerge with the 10-point win.

“It obviously wasn't the start we wanted, but the players showed once again their resilience and 'never-give-up' attitude,” said Canada West coach of the year Damian Jennings. “We are of course pleased to have made it to nationals, but I know this group won't be happy to settle for a silver medal tomorrow.”

It was all Alberta early on in Friday's game, as the No. 10-ranked Pandas outscored the host Dinos by a 19-7 margin in the first quarter. Sparked by solid play off the bench from both Hillier and Kendra Asleson, the visitors continued their solid play in the second and pushed the lead to as much as 15 points before Calgary finally showed some signs of life.

The Dinos clamped down on the defensive side of the ball, allowing just two points in the final four minutes of the second quarter. Calgary went on an 8-0 run before halftime to cut the lead to just six points heading into the break.

Calgary drew even on four occasions in the third quarter, but the Dinos weren't able to break through and the teams headed into the fourth tied at 47-47. After a low-scoring first few minutes of the fourth, the Dinos finally took their first lead of the game about three minutes into the quarter after a pair of Kristie Sheils free throws gave Calgary a 51-49 advantage.

Alberta tied up the game midway through the fourth, but Calgary scored 12 consecutive points over the next four minutes – including back-to-back three-point daggers from Jessica Franz and Sheils – to build up their first double-digit lead of the game and coast to victory down the stretch.

Canada West Quarter-final Game 2: Thompson Rivers at Calgary (Feb. 23, 2013 at Jack Simpson Gym, Calgary) DINOS TO HOST FINAL FOUR WITH QUARTER-FINAL WIN

CALGARY – The Dinos punched their ticket to the Canada West women's basketball Final Four next weekend with a 79-66 win over Thompson Rivers on Saturday night at Jack Simpson Gymnasium.

Thanks to Alberta's win over UBC on Saturday night, as well as a plethora of tie breakers, the Dinos clinched the semifinal home game and will host the entire Final Four series at Jack Simpson Gymnasium.

Jessica Franz was a standout for the Dinos on the night, scoring a team-high 21 points. Point guard Megan Schaufele also had a successful night for Calgary, scoring 16 points, grabbing eight rebounds, and adding four assists. Tamara Jarrett and Ashley Hirons both scored about ten points each.

For the WolfPack, Diane Schuetze ended her career with a game-high 23 points and eight rebounds. Tracy Kocs was the only player on the court to record a double double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

In a fast paced first quarter, the Dinos held a slight lead after ten minutes by a score of 21-18. The second quarter continued to be a close game with both teams generating offence. Thompson Rivers got within one at 27-26, but from then on the Dinos pulled away when Franz turned up the heat down low.

A three-pointer from Schaufele later on gave the Dinos the ten-point lead with two minutes remaining in the quarter. Excellent defence was demonstrated on both ends Calgary headed into half time up 42-35.

The fourth quarter saw the WolfPack outscore the Dinos, but it wouldn't be enough for them to overtake the lead, and Calgary confirmed their spot at the Final Four with a 79- 66 quarter-final win.

With the win, the Dinos will play the Alberta Pandas at 6 p.m. at Jack Simpson Gymnasium, followed by the second Canada West women's basketball semifinal at 8 p.m. between the Regina Cougars and the Fraser Valley Cascades.

Canada West Quarter-final Game 1: Thompson Rivers at Calgary (Feb. 22, 2012 at Jack Simpson Gym, Calgary) No. 5 DINOS TOOK MUCH FOR WOLFPACK TO HANDLE IN PLAYOFF OPENER

CALGARY – The Dinos won their first playoff game of the season on Friday night as they took down the visiting Thompson Rivers WolfPack 71-58 in a best-of-three quarter-final series at the Jack Simpson Gymnasium.

Calgary exploded in the second quarter of the game to defeat the WolfPack, and with the help of Ashley Hirons' game-high 20 points and eight rebounds, got one step closer to a Final Four berth. Fifth-year Megan Schaufele followed that performance up with 15 points and four assists, and veterans Jessica Franz and Tamara Jarrett scored 13 and 11 points, respectively.

For Thompson Rivers, Jen Ju scored a team-high 18 points in the game. No. 3 leading scorer in the league, Diane Schuetze was the only player to record a double-double on the night with 15 points and 14 rebounds. Tracy Kocs also hit double digit numbers with 13 points of her own.

A slow start for the Dinos in the first half saw them having to make up lost points early on. With the WolfPack sinking baskets from a number of places on the court, Calgary trailed after the first quarter 18-14.

After the quick break, the Dinos went on an outstanding 14-0 run to start the second quarter. It took almost five minutes for the WolfPack to score their first basket of the quarter to go up 28-20.

The Dinos ended the half with a three-pointer from point guard Schaufele to give them the ten-point lead heading into halftime. Calgary outscored Thompson Rivers 24-10 in the second.

Once again, it took almost half of the quarter for the WolfPack to get on the board, with the Dinos extending their lead to 18 before allowing the visitors to score. As the quarter started to slow down for both teams, Thompson Rivers pulled within ten to have the same deficit as the beginning of the quarter. Dino Hirons had a game-high 17 points with ten minutes left in the game.

In the fourth, both teams continued to work, with the Dinos maintaining their lead, and the WolfPack trying to break it. Nothing could be done from Thompson Rivers side of things, as the Dinos were too strong on the offence on the night. Calgary won the first game of the series 71-58.

Canada West: Regina at Calgary (Feb. 2, 2013 at Jack Simpson Gymnasium, Calgary) DINOS IN THE DRIVERS SEAT AFTER SPLIT WITH COUGARS

CALGARY – Led by a gutsy performance from fourth-year guard Tamara Jarrett, the No. 8 University of Calgary Dinos earned a split with the No. 3 Regina Cougars Saturday night with a 79-68 win in the Jack Simpson Gym.

The win evens the two teams' records at 15-3 with four games to play. However, with the teams splitting their games and all remaining games to be played within the Prairie Division, the Dinos now own the tiebreaker with Regina and sit in the driver's seat for the divisional pennant as the season winds down. Calgary also clinched a home playoff series with the victory and will host a best-of-three conference quarterfinal series Feb. 22-24 – their first home playoff series since 2008.

Jarrett's 22-point night led all players in scoring as she connected on eight of 12 shots from the field. But most impressively, she played the last 17:49 of the game with four fouls.

“The game today was one about courage,” said Dinos head coach Damian Jennings. “It's an impressive thing when you have a game plan and you're prepared, and you don't need to move to Plan B. As for Tamara, we're more likely to win games when she's on the floor. When you show them trust, they often reward you, and she's done that now three or four times.”

Regina won the series opener Friday night by a 76-72 score, with the Dinos battling back from a 21-point deficit in the process.

Trailing by six at the half, the Dinos came back out and posted two solid defensive quarters, allowing just 23 points in the second half after giving up 27 in the second quarter alone. A trey by Jarrett midway through the third quarter tied the ball game, and the Dinos took the lead for good shortly thereafter. Regina did get within one point with five minutes left in the fourth, but Calgary ended the game on a 10-0 run and shut out the Cougars for the final 5:04 of the game.

Kristie Sheils and Jessica Franz each chipped in with a dozen points, with Franz hauling down a team-best eight rebounds as well. Alex Cole put up 11, while Kiersten Craig contributed 10 as five Dinos players reached double digits in scoring.

Just three Cougars managed the feat, led by Lindsay Ledingham's 17-point night. Brittany Read picked up a 15-point, 10-rebound double-double, and Katie Polischuk added 10 in a losing cause for Regina.

Calgary's 72- and 79-point nights this weekend represent the two highest-scoring games of the season against the Cougars, who average just 58.9 points against. And with four games remaining, Jennings' message to his team was that the victory only counts for something if they're able to take care of business the rest of the way.

Canada West: Regina at Calgary (Feb. 1, 2012 at Jack Simpson Gymnasium, Calgary) No. 3 COUGARS HAND No. 8 DINOS THIRD LOSS OF THE SEASON

CALGARY – The visiting No. 3 Regina Cougars almost gave up a 21-point lead to the University of Calgary Dinos on Feb. 1, but prevailed, despite being outscored 30-13 in the fourth by a score of 76-72.

The game started off on the right foot for the Dinos as they earned an early lead of 8-0 over their nationally-ranked rivals. It wouldn't last for long though, as the Cougars would come roaring back, scoring eight unanswered points of their own around the five minute mark.

A three-pointer from Kristie Sheils put the Dinos back up 11-8, and from there, they used the final minutes of the opening quarter to gain a five point advantage. The home team headed into the second quarter up 17-12.

The No. 3 Cougars weren't so easily defeated as they continued to fight for the lead. Tying the score up at 19, the second quarter saw a number of three's drained on both ends of the court, including a three coming from forward Franz of Calgary and another coming from rookie guard Katie Polischuk of Regina.

In what was sure to be a close game all the way through, both teams didn't disappoint. Scoring a three-pointer at the buzzer, thanks to Cougar Danielle Schmidt, the visitors gained the small advantage heading into the second half, up 37-34.

The Dinos were forced to call a timeout early in the third as Regina came out on fire, scoring eight points in a minute and a half compared to Calgary's two. The Cougars extended their lead to 14 with another five points before Cole was able to get the Dinos back on the board in the third with a lay-up.

The relentless pressure of the Cougars didn't let up throughout the third, as they pulled away throughout the third quarter to earn a 20 points lead with three and a half minutes to go. Twenty-one points would be the difference at the end of the quarter with the Dinos having their work cut out for them in the fourth as they were outscored 26- 8.

In the final quarter of the game, Calgary slowly chipped away at Regina's lead. A three-pointer for 6-foot-1 forward Cole cut down the Cougars' lead to just nine points at 68- 59. She followed that up with her second three in a row to get the Dinos within six and get the crowd riled up.

With less than two minutes left in the game, the Dinos comeback got within five with the Cougars in foul trouble. Franz would sink a three-pointer with less than 30 second left on the clock to bring the Dinos within just three points, coming from a 21 point deficit from the beginning of the third quarter.

Unfortunately, the Dinos were unable to catch up with a final four second left on the clock, they would ultimately fall 76-72 to the No. 3 Cougars despite outscoring them in the fourth 30-13.

Canada West: Fraser Valley at Calgary (Jan. 18, 2013 at Jack Simpson Gym, Calgary) DINOS KNOCK OFF NO. 1 FRASER VALLEY IN OT

CALGARY – It was a rough night for top seeds in CIS women's basketball Friday night – and the unranked University of Calgary Dinos made a statement with a 79-69 overtime victory over the No. 1-ranked University of the Fraser Valley Cascades in the Jack Simpson Gym.

Led by a 23-point effort from senior Jessica Franz and a 15-point, 10-rebound, six-steal double-double by Tamara Jarrett, the Dinos regrouped after giving up the lead late and blasted the Cascaded 18-8 in the extra period to improve to 11-2 on the season.

After Kayli Sartori had tied the game with a pair of free throws in the final stages of the fourth quarter – completing a seven-point comeback for the Cascades in the final five minutes as they held the Dinos scoreless over that stretch – Calgary found its offensive touch again in overtime, taking the lead for good just over a minute into the abbreviated frame. With the Cascades in foul trouble and the Dinos with fouls to give, Calgary was able to slowly wear down the top-ranked UFV squad and emerged with the 10-point victory.

Calgary's 18-point overtime score outdid three of the four regulation quarters offensively, eclipsed only by a 23-point third quarter that brought the Dinos back from a five- point halftime deficit.

Six players carried the lion's share of the load for the Dinos, all recording more than 24 minutes on the court – led by Jarrett's 41-minute effort.

Sartori's 19 points led the way for the Cascades, who dropped just their second game of the season after losing 59-55 at Regina on Dec. 1. Sarah Wierks added 16 points and 15 rebounds to pace her side, while Aieisha Luyken was held to nine points and seven rebounds.

Fifth-year point guard Megan Schaufele continued her solid play for the Dinos Friday night, picking up 19 points and hitting three clutch free throws in overtime to pad Calgary's lead. Kristie Sheils scored eight off the bench for Calgary to follow up the Franz-Jarrett-Schaufele trio.

Fraser Valley (11-2) joins No. 2 Regina (11-2) on the upset pile Friday after the Cougars dropped a 61-58 decision to Victoria on the Island earlier Friday. The Cascades head south to face Lethbridge Saturday night.

The Dinos, meanwhile, will look to maintain their focus as they take on the (3-10) Saturday night, with tip-off at 5 p.m. MT in the Jack. And Jennings doesn't expect a complacent squad in that one.

“Canada West is a tough conference, and we have a tough game tomorrow,” said Jennings. “They're no pushover, they're scrappy, and most of my speech tonight was about tomorrow following up with our tenacity and our defensive performance.”
