Canada West Universities Athletic Association 2013-14 Canada West Media Release Tuesday, November 26, 2013 Canada West 1st Stars of the Week: Hoop stars Cassie Cooke, Jarred Ogungbemi-Jackson grab weekly honours EDMONTON – Cassie Cooke helped the Brandon Bobcats basketball team end a three-year winless drought, while Jarred Ogungbemi-Jackson led Calgary to two wins on the hard court this past weekend. In a week of tough competition and many outstanding performances, Cooke and Ogungbemi-Jackson were named Canada West 1st Stars of the Week. WOMEN 1st STAR: #14 Cassie Cooke, Brandon (basketball) Home: Westminster, Maryland Height: 5-8 Year: 3rd Academic: BPES Cassie Cooke led the Brandon Bobcats women’s basketball team to its first winning-streak in five years with wins over UNBC and Mount Royal this past weekend, and did so in spectacular fashion. The two-win came on a grueling road-trip which saw the Bobcats travel 3,300 kilometers to play games in Prince George, B.C. on Friday and in Calgary on Sunday. Friday’s game saw Cooke net her second double-double of the season with 19 points and 12 rebounds in which the ‘Cats won by seven, snapping the school’s 73-game losing streak. Cooke followed up Friday’s performance with an amazing 39 points in 49 minutes played as the ‘Cats beat Mount Royal 80-72 in double-overtime. The former AUS player of the year and CIS All-Canadian has been a force since joining the Bobcats, leading the nation and Canada West conference in scoring, becoming the first Bobcat to do so since Sandra Hamilton did so in 1992. Cooke also leads the conference in steals and minutes played, and ranks among conference leaders in rebounding, assists, free-throw percentage, 3-point percentage, and assist/turnover ratio. 2nd STAR: #33 Lindsey Post, Alberta (hockey) Second-year Alberta Pandas hockey goalie Lindsey Post recorded two straight shutouts in a home-and-home series with the Calgary Dinos, stopping a total of 35 shots, including seven in a 12-round shootout, and in the process tied a Canada West and CIS record for most consecutive shutouts with four. The Chelsea, Quebec native has not allowed a goal in a stretch of 284 minutes and 55 seconds, and she now leads Canada West and CIS in goals against average (.59) and save percentage (.962). During Friday night’s 1-0 win over Calgary, Post made nine stops for the victory, and on Saturday, she stopped 26 Dino attempts, including four in overtime, and then stopped another seven during a 12-round shootout which the Pandas eventually lost 1-0. Alberta, now 8-3-3 on the season and ranked No.10 in Canada, will close out the first half of the season on the road with a two game series in Winnipeg against the Manitoba Bisons 3rd STAR: #10 Katy Klomps, UBC Okanagan (volleyball) The UBC Okanagan Heat women’s volleyball team continued to play solid defensively and have won 12 straight sets after their weekend sweep of the visiting Wesmen this past weekend. The wins and the strong defensive game are due largely to the efforts of third-year middle Katy Klomps. In Friday’s match Klomps was player of the game after being extremely effective on offence and defence, tallying seven kills and five blocks assists for the Heat. Her play in the 3-0 (25-20, 25-18, 25-19) victory earned her player of the match. On Saturday, Klomps was more than effective, she was downright dominant for UBC Okanagan in the second straight three set (25-19, 25-14, 27-25) win over Winnipeg. Scoring a team high 16 points on five blocks, 12 kills at a deadly .750 rate, and added one service ace, for good measure. She is currently leading Canada West with a .392 hitting percentage, and second in assists at 1.59 per set. UBCO has an 8-2 record and now travel to square off against the Calgary Dinos. MEN 1st STAR: #3 Jarred Ogungbemi-Jackson, Calgary (basketball) Home: Winnipeg, MB Height: 5-9 Year: 4th Academic: Arts Jarred Ogungbemi-Jackson was a force to be reckoned when he led the University of Calgary Dinos to two much-needed wins at Jack Simpson Gymnasium, Nov. 22-23. On Friday, the point guard out of Winnipeg scored a game-high 32 points in Calgary’s win over the Thompson Rivers WolfPack. In his 38 minutes played, Ogungbemi-Jackson also recorded a double-double when he grabbed ten rebounds for the Dinos. He added four steals and two assists. The following night, the Dinos hosted and defeated the UBC Okanagan Heat. The Arts student once again led all scorers in the game, this time with 24 points to add to his season total. He hit three of four three- pointers and picked up four rebounds and four assists. After his performance this weekend, Ogungbemi-Jackson has moved to the number one spot in the conference in scoring, averaging 21.6 points per game. The Dinos will host the Brandon Bobcats, Nov 28- 29 in their final games before the December break. 2nd STAR: #5 Brad Gunter, Thompson Rivers (volleyball) As the WolfPack continue to move up the Canada West standings, this past weeks sweep of the Saskatchewan Huskies was another ‘day at the office’ for Brad Gunter. Following a tremendous summer with Canada’s Junior National team, Gunter has returned to the Canada West and become one, if not the most dominant left side in the league. Entering the weekend as the Canada West leader in kills and points, Gunter had 44 kills in 79 chances with 17, digs, four service aces, a solo block and six block assists in leading the CIS #10 WolfPack to a sweep of the #7 Huskies. The WolfPack hit the road for the final time before Christmas as they visit the Mount Royal Cougars Friday and Saturday (Nov 29-30) 3rd STAR: #9 Devin Gannon, Mount Royal (hockey) Devin Gannon was easily the Mount Royal Cougars’ top player this weekend racking up five points in their two wins against Lethbridge. He tallied 12 shots on the weekend and was a plus five. His game was not limited to offense as he was counted on in the biggest defensive situations and came out on top. His solid two-way game helped the Cougars earn a weekend sweep of the Pronghorns and move into a tie for fourth spot in the conference. On Friday night, in Lethbridge, Devin had a career game notching four goals in the Cougars 4-1 win over Lethbridge. He scored all the goals in succession which is a Cougars record in Canada West. His seven shots on goal and plus 4 rating led all players on either team. When the series shifted back to Calgary, it was his turn to be the play-maker. His line mate Cody Cartier scored a natural hat-trick, one of which assisted by Gannon. His contribution to that game was just as much offensively as defensively, as he found himself on the ice in every key situation. When the Cougars fell shorthanded in overtime, it was Gannon out killing the 4-on-3. Devin and the Cougars weathered the storm and eventually won 6-5 in a shootout. The Kamloops, B.C. native is currently enrolled in his second year of the Arts Program at Mount Royal.
