Dr. Milton Richards

Senior Director, Athletics and Recreation

Dear fans and supporters,

Welcome back for another season of Clan men’s basketball here at . I am sure you are as excited as I am to welcome a large recruiting and transfer class and watch them add to the strides we made last season.

In 2013-14 the men’s basketball team finished with their best record since the Clan joined the NCAA and showed moments of brilliance in the very competitive Great Northwest Athletic Conference. Junior Sango Niang received the program’s second GNAC all-star honours since 2010, and with his return among other key returnees, transfers and a strong freshman class, I believe that these young men will continue to improve in 2014-15.

The team returns only two letter-winners from last year, but with the arrival of seven transfer athletes our team looks to have a larger amount of depth that has been seen in seasons past.

I am also pleased to report that progress is being made on the stadium to be built on campus at Simon Fraser University. While it does not affect basketball spectators and athletes directly, we hope that through construction of this stadium a greater sense of community and belonging will be fostered here on Burnaby Mountain.

On behalf of the entire department, thank you for supporting Clan men’s basketball and Simon Fraser University Athletics.

Dr. Milton Richards

From its inception in 1965. Simon Fraser University pioneered an innovative approach to education and Canadian student athletics. We were the first to provide athletic awards to academically superior and athletically gifted student-athletes. We were the first Canadian university to compete in the USA-based National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics and we were among the first to hire only full time professional coaches to guide our gifted student-athletes in their pursuit of excellence.

Simon Fraser University Athletics is now in the midst of the newest chapter of its storied history, as in 2010 it became the first international institution to compete in the National Collegiate Athletics Association. Fully accredited members of NCAA Division II since 2012, the Clan, and the community around it are once again trailblazers in their fields, representing the country and the school at the highest level of student-athlete excellence offered in Canada.

As a member of the NCAA Div. II Great Northwest Athletic Conference, Simon Fraser is the only school in Canada with the ability to offer full-ride scholarships for athletics which believe with help keep some of our country’s best student -athletes in Canada. This also means the need to fundraise for athletic scholarships has never been greater.

James Blake / Head Coach Blake enters his fifth year at the helm of the SFU Clan men's basketball program, having joined in the summer of 2010, leading the program through the Clan's transition into the NCAA. A native of Victoria, BC, Blake is the sixth head coach in the 49-year history of the men's basketball team at Simon Fraser.

He took over the SFU program almost from scratch, beginning a major rebuilding project that saw the 2010-11 squad open the year with 13 new players and only three returners. From the three returners just one player played significant minutes the previous CIS(Canadian Interuniversity Sport) season. Since shepherding the Clan into the NCAA Div. II ranks in 2010 Blake's teams have improved every year with the 2013-14 improving by seven wins over the previous season.

Blake’s last post before joining the Clan was the associate head coach position at Columbia College. Prior to that, Blake spent two seasons as an assistant coach helping Division I California State University, Northridge win two Big West Titles, and earned an NCAA Tournament first round appearance against Memphis in 2009. Prior to that post, Blake served as the head assistant men’s basketball coach at Division II California State University, Stanislaus.

Blake played collegiately at Brandon from 1995-1997 and for the University of Victoria from 1998-2000. He graduated from Victoria with a B.A. degree in History, and later graduated from the Masters Coaching Program at The National Coaching Institution in Victoria.

During his playing days at Brandon, Blake helped lead the team to the CIS National Championship in 1996. For his efforts, he won several post-season awards including Rookie of the Year and Most Inspirational. Transferring to Victoria prior to his junior season, Blake helped lead the team to the Canada West Championship in 1999 and an appearance in the Elite Eight in Halifax after which he was awarded the Inspirational Varsity award. After graduation, Blake took his playing skills overseas to England where he played professionally for one year (12.0 ppg, 4.8 apg) for the Coventry Crusaders.

Blake has been married to wife Maria since the summer of 2013 and they have one child, Lyla Mae Blake.

PG. 9 MEN’S BASKETBALL - 2014/15 Preview: Clan look to improve on break-out 2013 season

Burnaby, BC – With a fresh roster and a new system of play prepared for the 2014-15 season, the Simon Fraser Univer- sity men’s basketball team is ready to showcase a new look in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference this year. The Clan are ranked ninth in the GNAC preseason poll heading into their upcoming campaign, and despite having finished at the bottom of the conference in years past, are confident that this will be the year they make a new mark.

“The first word that comes to mind when comparing this year’s team to last year’s is intensity,” said Head Coach James Blake. “With our new personnel, we will be able to play a style that is tougher and harder.”

The team wrapped up the 2013-14 season with a 10-15 overall record, but was the GNAC’s lowest performers with a 3-15 conference record. It was, however, an improvement on the previous year where SFU earned a single confer- ence-win. Simon Fraser gained momentum in 2013 due in part to the duo of guards Sango Niang (Paris, France) and Justin Cole (Los Angeles, CA), who transferred to the program together from Chaffey Community College, bringing a spark and an intensity that the Clan had previously lacked.

In 2014 the pair will aim to continue improving and help SFU break into the top of the GNAC standings for the first time in program history. Niang has already received conference honours as the senior was named to the GNAC preseason all-conference team this week. He was voted in unanimously, earning the second-highest number of votes. In 2013, the 6-foot Niang was ranked seventh in conference scoring, averaging 16 points and five assists each game; a number he will look to improve on this year.

The 6-foot-4 Cole averaged 13 points per game off the bench for SFU in 2013, and will serve as the Clan’s captain this season. “In my role as a captain I will try to lead the team to as many win as possible to make the playoffs,” said Cole. “We have a new team this year, including 12 freshmen, and we are ready to show what we have been working on.”

Cole also led the team in three-point shooting last season, which will be a crucial asset to Simon Fraser’s game-plan in 2014.

“Offensively, we’re shifting some focus to solidifying our three-point game,” added Blake.

The Clan will add six transfer players to their roster of four returnees, which includes Cole, Niang, 6-foot-7 forward Gibran Sewani (Torrance, CA) and 6-foot guard Daniel Deflorimonte (Toronto, ON) who last played in 2012-13. The Clan has also retained three red-shirt freshmen from the 2014 team.

PG. 10 MEN’S BASKETBALL - 2014/15 Among the transfers are former Division I athletes Hide Vos (Barendrecht, Netherlands) and Michael Harper (Melbourne, Australia), who join the Clan from Cal State Fullerton and the University of Hawaii, respectively.

“One big key is that we have the personnel to play our new style,” said Blake. “During recruiting, we targeted guys that were athletic and had played in the same or similar systems. We also knew we had a strong backcourt returning so we looked to supplement our frontcourt.”

With a revamped system and a deeper roster, the team is ready for the challenges that will be presented in GNAC competition, and the Clan is poised to write a new path in a changing league.

“The biggest difficulty with the GNAC this year is that it is a whole new conference. In all, there are only four returning players who earned post-season awards so almost every team has a large number of new guys,” Blake said. “We are going to see a lot of the same systems as before, just with new personnel executing them.”

With the 2014-15 season just weeks away, the Clan is prepared for what lies ahead, and thanks to additions and alterations during the off-season, the team is ready for the road ahead.

The Clan begins its pre-season Oct. 31 in Moscow Idaho against NCAA Division 1 Idaho Vandals. The team will play its first home games against Northwest Indian College (November 14 and 15) and Douglas University (November 18).

The Clan opens the GNAC conference schedule with Red Night on Dec. 6 at 7:30 pm in the West Gym against rival Western Washington University. Fans are encouraged to wear red in support of the Clan.

CATCHING UP WITH THE CLAN

SANGO NIANG Paris, France Last School: Chaffey Community College #0 HT: 6’0” WT: 170 Position: G Class: Senior

Clan Athletics: When you transferred to the Clan last season did you expect to have the impact you did for the team and have the success that you had on offence? Sango Niang: I signed to SFU before my sophomore year at Chaffey College and right after I signed I started working twice as hard because I knew I would have to be ready to play against NCAA teams. The hard workouts in the summer were very beneficial for me last season and I worked even harder this past summer. I am glad I had good success last year in the offense and I hope to make have a more successful year this upcoming season.

Clan Athletics: You earned GNAC all-star honours last season. What can you credit to your success and what will you look to improve on this year in order to repeat? Sango Niang: I was happy to earn GNAC all star honors last year and I would like to credit my unselfish teammates and coaches for having trust in me to lead the team as a point guard. In order to repeat I will look to get more wins as a team and make everyone on my team better while doing it.

Clan Athletics: Coming from the USA what is the thing you miss most about home, and the thing you like the most about Canada? Sango Niang: The thing I miss most about California is my family and friends being at my games supporting me. I am glad we have 5 games in California this year so my family and friends will be able to see me play in my senior year. What I like most about Canada is that I get to be independent and make my own decisions because I am living by myself. This has really made me more mature because I had to learn to do many things alone.

Clan Athletics: You were injured for a portion of the 2013-14 season. How do you deal with injury and recovery and the stresses that go along with it? Sango Niang: The injury I had last year was stressful because I knew I couldn’t do everything that I wanted to. I dealt with the injury by going to the trainers room twice a day and keeping a positive attitude. I believe you need to stay positive through injuries because they will happen and if you don’t stay positive then it can really impact your season and confidence.

Clan Athletics: If you weren’t a basketball player what sport would you play? Sango Niang: If I wasn’t a basketball player I would most likely run track and field. I grew up running track because my father ran in four Olympics. Even though I don’t run track anymore it still helps me with stamina and mental toughness. I work out every summer with my father and it helps me throughout the season.

CATCHING UP WITH THE CLAN

JUSTIN COLE Los Angeles, CA Last School: Chaffey Community College #1 HT: 6’4” WT: 185 Position: G Class: Senior

Guard Justin Cole is only in his second season with the Clan, but has been considered a force since his arrival at SFU in 2013. The senior transferred to the Clan in his junior season with teammate Sango Niang, and together the two have made waves in the men's basketball program and in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. Here we get to know the man wearing No. 1, and what he hopes to do in his final year of competition.

Clan Athletics: When you transferred to the Clan last season did you expect to have the impact you did for the team and have the success that you had on offence? Justin Cole: Yes - I knew my role when I arrived for the 2013-14 season. Coach had told me to be aggressive on the ball on each play and that my teammates had confidence in me to go in and shoot the ball well in every game. I feel like I had the impact that was expected of me in my first season.

Clan Athletics: What was your focus in the off-season in terms of improvements heading into 2014-15? Justin Cole: My main focus was just to be ready to take on a big leadership role. Keeping my body healthy and staying positive and working out two to three times a day on the court or with weights was also a goal of mine this off season.

Clan Athletics: What do you find to be the best way to deal with pressure in tough situations? Justin Cole: For tough situations after a loss I usually watch game film with my coach to break down mental situations, and I go to the gym to relieve my stress by shooting lots of shots. I try not to let my emotions get the best of me and I try to stay calm even though some games can be frustrating.

Clan Athletics: If you weren’t a basketball player what sport would you play? Justin Cole: If I wasn't playing Basketball, I would most likely be involved with football or swimming. I swam all offseason - I'm like a fish!

Clan Athletics: Do you feel any pressure to lead the team to an improved record this season, or are you comfortable in your role as a senior and a leader? Justin Cole: Yes there is a lot of pressure as I am taking on a huge leadership role. We have 12 new players this year and my job is to teach and lead them so we can win as many games as possible. Sango and I are trying to go out with a bang for our last season here at SFU.

Clan Athletics: What can you say about the depth of the transfer class and how they will mesh with the program? Justin Cole: IWe are very deep, we have a lot of shooters that can help us in many ways. We have some solid posts players that I believe that can mesh well this year and give SFU a spark in our basketball program this year.
