Today­ and t01ll0rr07I.,-the average resident in Oregon and in the United States can look fOr7t'Ord confidently to a level of health and a life span beyond the highest expectations of his parents and grandparents. 3 OREGON STATE SYSTEM OF HIGHER EDUCATION An Overview The Oregon State System of Higher Education, organized in 1932, pro­ vides educational opportunities to young people and adults throughout the State of Oregon. Member institutions are elements of an articulated system, parts of an integrated whole. Opportunities for general education are distributed as widely as pos-~ sible throughout the state, while specialized professional and technical programs are centered at specific institutions. The institutions of the State System of Higher Education are Oregon State University at Corvallis, the University of Oregon at Eugene, Portland State University at Portland, Oregon College of Education at Monmouth, Southern Oregon College at Ashland, Eastern Oregon .' College at La Grande, and Oregon Technical Institute at Klamath Falls. The University of Oregon Medical School and the University of . Oregon Dental School are located in Portland. The Division of Con­ tinuing Education represents all the institutions in making college level courses and special programs available to all citizens. The Division has offices in Salem and Roseburg as well as on most OSSHE campuses. An interinstitutional booklet, "Your Education," lists fields of study at:.. all State System institutions, and gives other important information for prospective students.     When the End Comes to Higher Education Institutions, 1890-2019: A Data Source Virginia Sapiro Boston University This is a partial list of the concluding episodes of the independent existence of a selection of higher education institutions from 1890 to the beginning of 2019. It aims to include all institutions that were ever regionally accredited at the bachelors level or above or whose resources contributed in a genealogical sense to an institution that was accredited at that level. Or the era before accreditation it includes all institutions that were authorized to confer bachelors degrees or above or that contributed in a genealogical sense to an institution so authorized. It excludes straightforward transformations of an institution, as when an academy or normal school is re-chartered to become a college or university. This listing shows different kinds of finality. These include: o The institution simply closes. In some cases the assets are acquired by another or successor institution of higher education, which may acknowledge the closed institution, for example, by naming a program after it, but the closed institution no longer has an independent existence. o One institution merges into another. Even if its name is preserved, for example, as the name of a college in a university, it no longer has separate accreditation or autonomy. o A new higher education institution is created by the merging of previously existing institutions.     An historical chronology Creating the Building Blocks 1867 Members of the medical department at Willamette University in Salem begin the first formal medical education program in Oregon. 1877 Willamette University's medical education program relocates to Portland. 1887 University of Oregon establishes a medical school in northwest Portland. The school is the only medical school in the Pacific Northwest. 1898 The Oregon College of Dentistry is founded in downtown Portland. 1899 The Tacoma College of Dental Surgery moves to Portland from Washington. 1900 The Oregon College of Dentistry and the Tacoma College of Dental Surgery merge to form the North Pacific Dental College, later renamed the North Pacific College of Oregon. 1913 Willamette University and the University of Oregon merge their medical education programs to form the University of Oregon Medical School. 1917 The present 116-acre Marquam Hill campus gets its start with a 20-acre tract donated by the Oregon-Washington Railroad and Navigation Company, and an 88-acre tract donated by the family of C.S. Jackson, former publisher of the Oregon Journal. The state wide Children's Development and Rehabilitation Center Service Program is established in the School of Medicine to provide diagnostic, treatment and rehabilitation services for handicapped children. 1919 The University of Oregon Medical School moves from downtown Portland to its present location on Marquam Hill in southwest Portland. The first building, Mackenzie Hall, begins an era of development that now includes 33 major buildings on the Marquam Hill campus as well as numerous facilities throughout the tri-county Portland metropolitan area. The University of Oregon in Eugene begins offering courses in nursing.
