MATERIALS LIST Previous experience is not necessary. Owning a film camera is encouraged. Students can discuss with the instructor via email prior to the class commencing.
Recommended Materials Approx. Cost 35mm or 120 roll film camera, preferably all manual. Variable* Hand-held light meter, if camera has none built in. Course Topics
1. Light sensitive Materials Theory and Practice: a short history of photography, how silver salts work, practical sensitometry, getting good exposures, and a common sense overview of The Zone System.
2. Using Film Cameras: Relationship of light quantity to ISO, f-stop and speeds, stopping motion, depth- of-focus, hyper-focal setting. Hands-on experiments with a fully adjustable instant film camera.
3. Working with artificial light sources: Interior and portrait lighting tools and techniques and film speed testing.
4. Developing Black and White Film without A Darkroom: Daylight tank development, streamlined; highly reliable methodology using non-toxic, coffee-based developer.
5. Scanning Black and White Negatives and Digital Printing: Using a flatbed scanner, dealing with low contrast and overexposed negatives, preparation for printing in Photoshop, printer profiles.
6. The Fine Print--Digital Printing II: The printing process as visual tool for creating a professional- looking body of work.
