The first civil transportation airport in Brazil was inaugurated on November 1936, while Rio de Janeiro was the Brazilian capital, two kilometers from the downtown area. To date, 29 thousand passengers are transported per day, approximately ten million per year, the second in public transportation in Rio de Janeiro, and the sixth Brazilian airport. On September 2019, SDU airport re-opened the two airport runways, closed for maintenance since August 12. Key findings pointed SDU airport important for regional flights in Rio, where Galeão International Airport (GIG) operates international flights. Also, despite the Brazilian capital has been changed from Rio to Brasilia, in 1961, SDU Airport, nevertheless, kept increasing civil transportation rates, due to its strategical location, in front of Guanabara Bay. Asian Breeze (54) (亜細亜の風) Happy Autumn to you 27 October, 2017 Dear Coordinators and Facilitators in Asia/Pacific region. You must be relaxed after sending out SAL yesterday. Now you may be busy preparing for SC141 to be held in Madrid in two weeks. Autumn, the best season of the year has come to Japan. During the peak of the autumn season, the leaves of the maple trees and ginkgo trees turn red and yellow in concert presenting you with beautiful scenery at every turn. There are many ways of enjoying the autumn leaves. Visiting traditionally famous places is one thing. Taking walk down historical streets to enjoy the autumn colors is another. Taking a ride on the boat in the river is little unusual. Surrounded in a panoramic autumn view while soaking in a hot spring is also nice. I, of course, prefer the last one. For this issue, we have received the wonderful contribution from Mr. Leandro Monterio de Souza of ANAC featuring Brasilia International Airport (BSB), Tancredo Neves/Confins International Airport (CNF) and Carlos Drummond de Andrade Airport (PLU). In addition, the introduction of new members of IATA SPWG, JSAG and WWACG Board is featured. You will also find the invitation of APACA/15 meeting and Asian Tea Gathering at the occasion of IATA SC141. I hope you will enjoy reading them. • The Cases of Brasília and São Paulo – Guarulhos Airports
AIRPORT CONCESSIONS IN BRAZIL AND ITS INFLUENCES ON SERVICE QUALITY: THE CASES OF BRASÍLIA AND SÃO PAULO – GUARULHOS AIRPORTS Thiago Allis1 Rafael Castro2 Carla Fraga3 ABSTRACT Over the last decade, the Brazilian air market has tripled in size, a result of economic expansion and the spread of the air travel culture, among others. As far as airport infrastructures are concerned, during the mega-events era (2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympics), the airport management sector started to receive greater investments from private and foreign companies. After 2012, a large array of improvements took place, in order to meet the demands associated with the mega-events, but also to tackle the increase of domestic air traffic. In this context, this paper aims to identify, describe and analyze the influences of the airport concession in Brazil on the quality of services perceived by the users (passengers). For that, an analysis of the reports of the aviation authorities is carried out. The airports of Guarulhos (São Paulo) and Brasília (Federal District), among the first to be privatized, were selected as case studies. From this study, the mobility of global capital associated with airport management deserves to be highlighted, while the expertise of these large companies is expected to contribute to the increase in the quality of services in Brazilian airports - historically managed by public sector. Keywords: Air Transport, Airports Concession, Quality of Services, Brazil. JEL Classification: L93, L83 1. INTRODUCTION Over the last decade, the Brazilian air sector has developed into a significant competitor in relation to the road transport, especially the transportation by bus.

  • 170814 CCLR JCB New Round of Airport Concessions in Brazil
New Round of Airport Concessions The Minister of Transport, Ports and Civil Aviation has just announced a proposal to include in the Federal Government Program of Investment Partnerships (PPI) three additional groups of airport concessions. The Minister announced the upcoming concessions in a public hearing carried out at the Brazilian Federal Senate. The estimated investments are around US$ 2.13 billion. The concessions are to be confirmed during a PPI conference in late August. The public procurement proceedings are expected to the begin in the first half of 2018. The new round will mark the beginning of a different structure for airport concessions. The groups of airports will be formed by more profitable airports and other assets with lower passenger demand. Infraero (the Brazilian state-owned company established to manage airports) will not be a mandatory shareholder of the concessionaire, as it has already happened in the last round of airport concessions. The information disclosed so far indicates that the following airport groups of will be up for bid: Cuiabá (in the State of Mato Grosso, Central East of Brazil), Recife (in the State of Pernambuco, Northeast of Brazil) and the Santos Dumont Airport, in Rio de Janeiro. The main feature of the new round is the concession of the Santos Dumont Airport, one of the most valuable assets under Infraero management and the Brazil’s 7 th busiest airport by passenger traffic. Santos Dumont will be the centerpiece of the airports located in the Southeast of Brazil, including the airport of Vitória (state capital of Espírito Santo) and four other terminals located in Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais, according to Government representatives.
