Ordinations 2020 – Kim Topham

For those of you who don’t already know me, my name is Kim and I’m the new assistant curate for the parishes of Hagley and Clent. I live in Clent with my husband, Steve and we have five children and four Grandchildren – two dogs, two cats, two ducks, five hens, and 50,000 bees!

I should have been ordained back in July, but this was postponed until 26th September at which point I was blessed by being ordained Deacon in Worcester Cathedral. My face

literally ached, as I couldn’t stop smiling, what a joyous occasion it was. Whilst searching for something online the other day I came across a 16th century description of a ‘Curate’, as written by Maria Grace.

A curate was usually a young man – oh dear, I’m neither young nor a man. Just recently ordained – that’s me. Who assisted or sometimes performed the duties of a clergyman – can’t wait! A curate’s wages would be paid from the vicar’s own pocket – has someone told Revd Richard this? As little as £50 a year, not enough for a maid – well what you’ve never had, you never miss.

A vicar did not have to give up the parsonage to the curate – he will be pleased. The piece continues to describe some of the duties of a vicar or curate. The clergyman’s duties in the church included holding service on Sundays and hold Holy Communion at least three times a year. Midweek duties included baptisms, marriages and funerals and visiting the sick. Outside of the church, clergyman officiated at parish meetings to discuss local affairs including charity, parish employment, care of the poor, repair and maintenance of the church and election of the churchwardens. The parish was responsible for the administration of the poor laws and elected Supervisors of the Poor who collected the Poor Rate taxes from the wealthier parishioners. The parish also appointed two surveyors to supervise the maintenance and repair of roads. Thus, whether vicar or lowly curate, the clergyman played a major role in the life of his parish community.

Now although I don’t intend to sort out neither Clent’s or Hagley’s pot holes, nor do I intend to collect taxes, I really do hope to play a significant role in both parish communities. As lockdown eases, I hope to get round to as many community groups and events as possible, as well as meeting on a one to one basis. I look forward to meeting you all over the coming months, so please remember to invite me along and if there’s tea and cake – I’ll be there!

Letter from Bishop Martin

2020 has been such a strange year. Autumn has arrived, yet in some ways the year never seems to have got started. I feel I am still living with so many uncertainties, and trying to make plans on the constantly shifting sands of guidance and advice based on ever evolving Covid realities. We are all learners in this, and pioneers too as we discover new ways of being church. Tiredness and fatigue are very natural too and sometimes the weight of it all can press very heavily. I’m so encouraged by the prayerful determination in our churches to be to be people of hope, even in the darkest times.

Traditionally we celebrate Harvest at this time. Its been a tough year for farmers, with heatwaves, droughts and floods. Sowing seed in a wet winter was almost impossible, and many grain harvests have been poor. Nevertheless lorries and trailers filled with bales of straw and hay are testimony to the resilience and grit of our farmers, who just had to ‘carry on carrying on’, pandemic or not. I salute all those who work on the land, who produce our food and tend our environment. Brexit will affect them all, though its still not clear how. They deserve our traditional harvest thanks and prayers.

We give thanks too for the harvest of Kingdom Values that have been so evident in parishes up and down our diocese this year, for every glimpse of love, every act of compassion, every shout for justice and every step into freedom.

May the Lord of the world, the Lord of the harvest, bless you and keep you. One God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen.

PRISONS SUNDAY Prisons’ Sunday, on the 2nd Sunday in October, begins a week of prayer for all those affected by prisons and will be on 11 October in 2020. Each year, the Diocesan Criminal Justice Affairs Group (CJAG) leads a service in the Cathedral – this year, it will focus on the impact of Covid-19 on the criminal justice system. Charmian Manship, from the CJAG said: “There are very real concerns that human rights have been ignored in prisons during the pandemic. There is a huge backlog of court hearings with raised anxiety of victims, witnesses and defendants; prison visits have been suspended affecting family relationships and prisoners are only let out of their cells for an hour a day with all education, social contact and gym facilities withdrawn. Most contact between probation and those on supervision has been by phone; and there is little mental health support.” The diocesan Criminal Justice Affairs Group aims to offer a Christian perspective and advises the Diocese on criminal justice matters. Members have experience of working within the criminal justice system, crown prosecution service, police, prisons, probation, youth justice, the parole board and defence lawyers as well as the Church.

All figures will have been prepared by the PCC Treasurer in advance, so there are no Treasurer routines to be done. It is simply a matter of spending approx. one day each time at the end of each half-year and end-of-year. An initial meeting lasting 2 hours would be sufficient. GIVING TO CHURCHES

Sunday Collections – Belbroughton & Fairfield

During the current pandemic, we continue to face many of our usual expenses such as insurance, utilities bills and churchyard maintenance, even though we are unable to use either of our church buildings. Many people give regularly to the church through Standing Orders. Others give through the envelope scheme or cash collection on the plate. Although we try to remain in touch via the computer, we obviously can’t take a collection, and we are concerned about what the effect of this reduction in income may be on our parish finances.

If you give by weekly envelope, please save them up and bring them to church when we can all worship together again. Alternatively, you might decide to give by regular standing Order or as a donation. If this is the case, we can accept either electronic bank transfer by computer or a cheque. Please send any cheques to the Church Office. If you can make an electronic bank transfer, the bank account for St Marks and Holy Trinity is HSBC in Stourbridge with a sort code of 40-43-17 and the account number is 91594095. As you may be aware, any amount that you give can be Gift Aided. There is no cost to you and the church receives at 25% rebate from the Government. For every £100 pound we collect, we can claim another £25 from HMRC. Please contact John Penlington for a simple form which you can sign saying you wish to apply Gift Aid to your donation for the past few years and the future. This is, of course, completely confidential and at no cost to you.

Sunday collections – St Leonard’s Church, Clent

Further to my note on giving during the coronavirus restrictions circulated at the end of March, there has been a very positive response – very many thanks on behalf of the PCC to those who have started new giving Standing Orders, increased existing ones or made donations over the last few weeks.

Just a reminder of the bank account details and my contact details if anyone else wishes to start regular giving or make a donation.

Bank: HSBC Account: Clent Parochial Church Council Sort code: 40-43-17 Account no: 31136593

Please contact me by email or telephone and I will send you a SO form which, if you are a taxpayer, will also enable me to claim Gift Aid on your giving.

I look forward to hearing from you and thank you in advance for any help you can give in these unprecedented and challenging times.

Keep safe and stay well.

BELLRINGING

It is, with regret, as I’m sure you all know, that report the loss of John Westley. John was one of the movers and shakers that got ringing going again in Belbroughton, ensuring there was a band to ring in the millennium and then being a highly dependable stalwart, always there when needed especially to help with the heating as, as I’m sure you all know, the church can get very cold in winter and the ringing chamber is part of the whole church – no shut off, out of the way room for us! His ringing over the last few years lessened as physically he declined to the point he was unsafe standing, but he was always there in the background and we shall miss him. Our thoughts and prayers are with Pat, Claire and Tom. It was a great privilege to be able to ring as he rested by the church on the day of the funeral and see him off in style. Unfortunately, due to coronavirus, attending the funeral was not possible but there was a zoom connection. (Remember the days before zoom!)

KITCHEN CORNER

Lemon Biscuits

Easy, so crumbly and utterly delicious and melt in the mouth moreish. The trouble being, one is never enough. Hey ho. I have had this recipe for years and they never fail. This quantity makes about 18-20 according to size of course, but easily doubled of course. Made and cooked in about 20 mins plus chilling. Store in an airtight container. Please use unwaxed lemons.

Pre heat your fan oven to 160C and lightly butter a large baking tray.

In a medium mixing bowl: place 6 oz plain flour the finely grated zest of a very large lemon or two small/medium 4 oz softened, [warm, room temp] butter

Using your hand, gradually work the butter, zest and flour together to form a stiff mixture, then work in: 2 oz caster sugar Chill for 30 mins.

Transfer to your work surface and carefully roll out until your mixture is about ¼ inch thick. Cut into rounds or whatever shape takes your fancy. I used a simple fluted 2½ cutter. Bring together and re roll off cuts. Carefully place the dough on your prepared baking sheet and bake for about 12 mins. Allow to cool on the tray for a moment or three then cool on a rack. Sprinkle over a little caster.

Oh my! Yum yum. So lemony and buttery. The minute the above were cold my husband ate four right off!! I had to rescue some to take the photo.

The 23rd Psalm (explained)

The Lord is my Shepherd ... (that's relationship) I shall not want ... (that's supply) He maketh me to lie down in green pastures ... (that's rest) He leadeth me beside the still waters ... (that's refreshment) He restoreth my soul ... (that's healing) He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness ... (that's guidance) For His name sake ... (that's purpose)

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death ... (that's testing) I will fear no evil ... (that's protection) For Thou art with me ... (that's faithfulness) Thy rod and Thy staff they comfort me ... (that's discipline) Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies ... (that's hope) Thou anointest my head with oil ... (that's consecration) My cup runneth over ... (that's abundance) Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life ... (that's blessing) And I will dwell in the house of the Lord ... (that's security) Forever ... (that's eternity)

Prayer by Rev C Beckett

Lord, as I put on my mask, let it be a filter For my words to pass through as well as my breathing. Let through only words which are helpful breathings of love and stop those things in my speech that will be harmful to others. Protect me also, O Lord, from the harmful things others may say to me. Help me to realise that we may be a carrier of bitterness, thoughtlessness, judgement and prejudice without realising, and that some people are more word-vulnerable than others. Give me grace to love those who cannot, or will not filter to protect others, and special grace to them, because they go through the world unprotected. Help me to be prepared to adapt and be brave and transparent so that all may have chance to hear. Lord, be a mask to my mouth And pin our ears forward for listening.

Amen

Dear Parishioners,

Like many, I’m sure by now I had hoped that the worst of the Covid19 epidemic would have been over and our meetings would have resumed. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Recently we have seen the restrictions continue, and in some areas tighten further to prevent further infections.

Given that the church hall will remain closed now for the remainder of 2020 this will mean that we will not meet again this year. I am disappointed that we cannot hold a meeting until January 2021 at the earliest but, given the serious public health threat this virus poses to us all, it is obviously the safest thing to do.

Please watch this space and whenever it will be safe to resume meetings, we will let everyone know.

As ever, stay safe

Alan Starling BHS Chairman.

OCTOBER IN THE GARDEN

Although we had some warmer days over September, the autumn is now definitely here for real, and it feels colder. It's a beautiful time of year, with the trees changing colour. Sometimes it may seem pointless raking, when the wind blows even more leaves onto the lawn, but just think of all the lovely leafmould you can make! It's also time to start preparing for early frosts.

1. Divide established rhubarb crowns to create new plants 2. Cut back perennials that have died down 3. Divide herbaceous perennials 4. Move tender plants into a greenhouse or conservatory 5. Plant out spring cabbages 6. Harvest apples, pears, grapes and nuts 7. Prune climbing roses 8. Finish collecting seeds from the garden to sow next year 9. Last chance to mow lawns and trim hedges in mild areas 10. Renovate old lawns or create new grass areas by laying turf

The Parish News October 2020 BELBROUGHTON HISTORY SOCIETY – FROM THE ARCHIVES

Castlebourne Tucked away behind the petrol filling station at the junction of Hartle Lane and the A491, Castlebourne is easy to miss, particularly if you are driving and focussing on the traffic. But glimpses of its distinctive castellated roof can be spotted amongst the trees, and it has a somewhat mysterious air. It had an interesting role in the early years of the C20th and the First World War. According to the 1911 census it was a sanatorium, under the directorship of Dr William Bernard Knobel, a Doctor of Medicine aged 34. He had been married for five years to Gladys, but they had no children. She is not recorded as having an occupation but it is possible that she would have assisted her husband in his work in some capacity. The census also records two hospital nurses and five servants (a cook, kitchen maid, parlour maid, house maid and ward maid). There are 11 boarders (six men and five women), presumably the patients, including an Army Reserve Captain and a jeweller, who come mainly from Staffordshire, but also from as far afield as Pembrokeshire. Photographs from about 1912 show the line of huts in which the patients were housed, all with large windows and what look like outdoor seating areas, suggesting that ventilation was regarded as an important part of recovery. This tallies with reports in 1907 of Dr Knobel urging the use of sanitoria to treat consumption (TB). With the onset of war in August 1914, hospital facilities would have been vital, and in October 1914, the Coventry Sanitary Committee recommended that ‘10 beds should be reserved at the Bourne Castle Sanatorium, Belbroughton, Stourbridge, for a period of two years from 1st November next, at a cost of £90 per bed per annum (equal to about 34s 8d per week).’ In an article entitled ‘Missions of Mercy’ the Birmingham Post of 31 July 1915 described how Dr Knobel was part of a party of 52 who spent four months in Serbia, offering medical and surgical aid. The party included a Birmingham contingent of three doctors, four nurses, four dressers and two orderlies. Several of the party, including Knobel, contracted typhus but all recovered and ‘the party worked happily and harmoniously together’. By the beginning of 1917, it seems the sanatorium was no longer operating, as Knobel, on active service abroad, ordered the sale of the contents. The sales particulars provide an interesting insight into life at Castlebourne. The ‘SUPERIOR HOUSEHOLD FURNITURE’ included ‘the Appointments of Six Bed Rooms, Reception Room furniture and the Entire FURNISHINGS of 30 OPEN-AIR CHALETS, Large Quantity of BED and TABLE LINEN, China and Glass. VALUABLE COTTAGE PIANOFORTE by John Broadwood and Kitchen and Cutlery Requisites.’ The ‘TWENTY SECTIONAL AND OTHER CHALETS’ consisted of ‘Several Extensive and Nearly new WOODEN ERECTIONS, forming Recreation Rooms, fitted Bath Rooms, Lavatories, &c., Valuable OUTSIDE EFFECTS, INCLUDING Strong TIP-CART, Garden and Farm Implements, & Lawn Mowers, Rick Poles and Sheet, Tools, Ladders, &c.’ Finally there were TWO CAPITAL SHORTHORN IN MILK DAIRY COWS’ and ’25 Couples of FOWLS, RICK OF FINE MEADOWN HAY, 8-10-h.p. SWIFT MOTOR-CAR &c.’

11

The Parish News October 2020 By the summer of 1918 the property was up for sale, though Knobel had a lease for a further year. It is described it as the ‘FREEHOLD ESTATE, known as “CASTLEBOURNE”, situate at BELL END, BELBROUGHTON, having extensive frontage to the main road midway between Stourbridge and Bromsgrove, and comprising an area of 22 ACRES, with FAMILY POSSESSION.’ The ‘residence’ itself consisted of an entrance hall, three reception rooms, nine bedrooms and good domestic offices. The outbuildings included a coach house, stabling for six horses, a kitchen garden and a greenhouse. Dr Knobel continued his medical career and in 1939 is recorded as a medical officer with the Ministry of Health, living in Sussex. BELBROUGHTON & FAIRFIELD PARISH COUNCIL

The Parish Council hopes all residents continue to keep safe during the health crisis and will follow the Government instructions. The Council remains functioning and is able to ‘signpost’ residents to support hubs and local groups. Please also use the below sites: http://www.worcestershire.gov.uk/Here2Help https://supportbromsgrove.com/ Due to the pandemic the Council remains unable to hold face to face meetings with the normal venues being unavailable. However, it continues to function using video conferencing. Playarea - Fairfield Recreation Ground The playground has reopened but we ask that users continue to strictly adhere to the ‘Covid - 19’ notices in place. The Green – Belbroughton Following the planting of thirteen new trees and a hedgerow, four historic village millstones are to be installed on the Green as part of the ongoing improvements to the site. Trees During September, the bi-annual health and safety tree survey will take place covering the Council owned sites. Belbroughton – Benches A review is underway with the aim of repairing / replacing a number of benches. Fairfield Dog Waste bins Additional bins are being considered – since the pandemic there has been a significant increase in usage of the bins and more capacity is needed.

THE GUNPOWDER PLOT, A MIDLANDS RISING

BY PHILIP BOWEN

This talk explores the most audacious attempted act of terrorism in our history which almost succeeded. Largely originating in Midland Catholic houses, we shall explore why a tiny group of young gentlemen resorted to such a desperate tactic.

If you would like to take part in the October meeting please contact us on [email protected] by 20th October. Everyone welcome.

The Parish News October 2020 ROYAL BRITISH LEGION – BELBROUGHTON BRANCH (CLENT & FAIRFIELD)

We have already confirmed that there will be a restricted Poppy Appeal in the area covered by our Branch in 2020, due to the CoVid Pandemic restrictions. Apart from paper poppies being distributed via the major supermarkets (of which we have none in our area), the only source for poppy regalia is online via The Poppy Shop. We have now finalised the arrangements for the commemoration of Remembrancetide, again very much changed because of the Pandemic. On Sunday, 8th November, we will be holding a Remembrance Sunday Service at the Clent War Memorial, assembling at 10.45am with the Standard, the two minutes silence and the laying of wreaths. Admission to the War Memorial will be restricted to those taking part in the service, flag bearers and those laying wreaths. I am sure that there will be space in the churchyard, but we must ask additional attendees that they comply with social distancing requirements, and we will not be able to assist with arrangements. As we are not using the public highway, there will be no measures in place to control traffic. On Sunday 8th November, we will also be holding a short Service of Remembrance, assembling at 10.45am at the Fairfield War Memorial, with two minutes silence and laying of wreaths. On Sunday 8th November, we will be having a full Remembrance Church Service at Belbroughton Church commencing at 11.15am. Afterwards we will have the wreath laying outside at the War Memorial. Given that there is a restricted Poppy Appeal in the area this year, any donations would be very welcome – please contact Tony Hadfield on 01562 731555 for details about cheque or bank transfer payments. We do not have facilities to accept cash donations this year. As The Royal British Legion, there was never an option that we would not commemorate the residents of Belbroughton, Clent and Fairfield; who have given their lives in conflict over the last 106 years; albeit on a much reduced scale in 2020. We hope to return in 2021, to celebrate The Royal British Legion’s 100th Birthday, and hope that this can return to our traditional commemoration. Kind regards Tony Hadfield Acting Chairman Belbroughton Branch

TEN OCTOBER FACTS 1. The town of Tubingen in Germany holds an annual rubber duck race every October 2. The Finnish for October is lokakuu meaning “dirty month” 3. The Anglo-Saxons called it Winterfylleth referring not to filth but the fullness of winter, and because it had the first full moon of the winter season. 4. The October Revolution in Russia in 1917 took place in November but the Russians still used the Julian calendar by which it was still October. 5. October is International School Library Month, and International Walk to School Month 6. In the UK it is also Black History Month, Lupus Awareness Month, Breast Cancer Awareness Month and National Cholesterol Month 7. Six US Presidents had October birthdays, which is more than any other month. 8. On any given day in the last week of October, there is a greater than even chance that it will rain in London. 9. The Great Hurricane of 1780 kills 20,000-30,000 in the Caribbean 10. The UK celebrates the 21st as Apple Day.

A local priest and pastor stood by the side of the road holding up a sign that said, "The End is Near! Turn yourself around now before it's too late!" They planned to hold up the sign to each passing car.

"Leave us alone, you religious nuts!" yelled the first driver as he sped by.

From around the curve they heard a big splash.

"Do you think," said one clergy to the other, "we should just put up a sign that says 'bridge out' instead?"

The Parish News October 2020 CLENT PARISH COUNCIL

Since April your Parish Council has been unable to hold its meetings in public in the Parish Hall. We have however been able to hold a meeting via Zoom to which the public are invited to attend. To gain access to one of our meetings please contact the Parish Clerk , Nick Farress at [email protected] who will provide details on how to access. We hope to hold meetings once more at the Parish Hall as soon as we are able. As we are all aware Covid 19 has had a significant impact on daily lives. This has impacted some of the improvements to Centenary Field and the play area we had planned for this year. The good news is we have been able to overhaul the areas around the play equipment, install a replacement bench and picnic table by the play equipment and replace both goal posts and nets. We are also moving ahead with the improvements to both goal mouth areas so they are useable in winter. We had planned to improve the pond area and repair the leaking pipe in the play area but this work is dependent upon Worcestershire County Council carrying out the work. The timetable has been affected by the pandemic so it may be carried over to next year. The contractor who cuts our grass and hedges unfortunately had a serious accident in the early part of the summer and is currently off work. We wish him a speedy recovery. In the meantime we have made arrangements for the grass to continue to be cut and we thank the Cricket Club for offering to carry this out on our behalf. Our October meeting will be on 19 October at 7pm. Notices will be displayed on notice boards and our website with the Agenda and whether it will be a Zoom meeting or one in the Parish Hall. Nick Sugden, Chairman

CLENT MOTHERS UNION

Autumn normally sees the start up of Mothers’ Union again after the summer holidays but sadly this year we have had to cancel our meetings for the present. With so many of our members being in the most vulnerable age group for Covid 19 it does not seem safe to arrange group meetings in the Hall just now.

However the situation seems to change almost day by day so it is not easy to make long term plans, but it does seem likely that we may not manage a meeting this side of Christmas. Meantime I hope we will keep in touch by phone and email and I send my love and best wishes to you all. Anne Harris PS No one has actually contacted me to point out that the August and September Mothers’ Union reports in this magazine were carbon copies of each other –which shows either that no one reads them anyway or else that Mothers’ Union members are an exceptionally polite lot! The fault was mine and I do apologise for sending Christine the same report two months running – it would never have happened when our dearly loved and much missed Pat Weston was doing the magazine reports. The Parish News October 2020 CHANGING CLOCKS

Tick tock, it’s time to change the clocks! The clocks go forward to British Summer Time (BMT) on the last Sunday in March every year, meaning we lose an hour of our day, (but don’t panic, we get it back on the last Sunday of October). But why do the clocks change twice a year? Whose idea was British Summer Time (BST)? And do other countries do it too? 1. We change our clocks for the summer to make better use of daylight. The clue is in the name. The purpose of Daylight Saving Time (or BST to the Brits) is to make better use of our daylight hours. During the northern hemisphere summer, when the sun shows its face for longer, we change the clocks so as to move an hour of light from the morning to the evening – when more of us are likely to be up, out and about. There’s little point in it being sunny when we’re all asleep! Of course, early risers like bakers and babies may disagree. 2. Daylight saving was first proposed by Benjamin Franklin Benjamin Franklin, the founding father and inventor, first proposed daylight saving in 1784 in a not-too-catchily-titled essay called ‘An Economical Project for Diminishing the Cost of Light’. It was seen as a cunning way to save on candles. In Britain, it was William Willett who first ran with the idea in his 1907 pamphlet called ‘The Waste of Daylight’) It is said that the concept dawned on him when he was out riding his horse early one summer morning and noticed how many curtains were closed. Sadly, he never saw his idea come to fruition. 3. Germany was the first country to adopt daylight saving. Germany adopted Daylight Saving Time in 1916 with the UK following suit within a few weeks. Both countries were knee-deep in the First World War, and needed to make as much use of daylight as possible in order to conserve coal. Parliament formalised this with the Summer Time Act of 1916, which stated that from Spring through to Autumn the legal time should be one hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time. 4. During WWII we put the clocks forward by two hours During the Second World War, British Double Summer Time was introduced. In the summer we put our clocks forward by a whole two hours as a means of maximising productivity; and in the winter the clocks remain one hour in advance of GMT for the same reason.

19

The Parish News October 2020 5. For three years from 1968 we got rid of BST completely We turned our backs on British Summer Time in 1968 – although not the acronym o- and adopted British Standard Time. In 1971, however we reverted back to BST. Sorry, we mean British Summer Time. Confused? 6. BST always begins on the last Sunday in March and ends on the last Sunday in October It’s always 1am on the last Sunday in March that clocks skip forward by an hour (which means the date always changes). The EU states that all member countries should adjust their clocks on the same day. With one exception – Iceland. The clocks then go back an hour on the last Sunday in October at 2am. 7. Only three European countries keep their clocks constant all year. Iceland is exempt from the EU’s DST directive. It’s so far north that it has much more extreme variations of daylight and darkness throughout the year than us, and the impact of changing the clock by an hour would be negligible. Belarus and Russian also choose to remain on the same time all year round. 8. Around 70 countries worldwide adopt daylight saving Most countries that deploy daylight saving measures are in Europe and North America. For countries on the equator, where daylight hours stay roughly the same throughout the year, daylight saving offers no real benefit. 9. Two American states opt out of Daylight Saving Time In the US, daylight saving is used everywhere apart from Arizona and Hawaii – who get plenty of daylight and sunshine all year round. Rebels! 10. One monarch had his own time zone Talking of rebels… in 1901, King Edward VII decided to invent his own time zone at the royal estate of Sandringham in Norfolk. The King, an avid fan of hunting, ordered all clocks on the estate to be set to “Sandringham Time” – half an hour ahead of GMT – in order to squeeze in an extra 30 minutes of his favourite pastime

each day.

The Parish News October 2020 LONDON HOSPITALS – part two

Voluntary Hospitals Between 1720 and 1745 London’s medical philanthropy manifested itself in a spate of hospital building. These tended to be more selective than the Royals, and included:- Westminster Hospital founded 1719. Airey Neave the MP, blown up by an IRA car bomb, died here in 1979. Guy’s founded 1721 by Thomas Guy, a publisher and printer who made a fortune in stocks and the South Sea Bubble. Originally for incurables discharged from St Thomas’s. St George’s founded 1734 in Knightsbridge where patients could receive the benefit of country air. The Foundling Hospital established by Captain Thomas Coram for the care of abandoned infants in 1742. The London Smallpox Hospital, 1746, opened to remove infectious servants from their place of residence for the security of private families. The London Hospital, founded 1740 in Moorfields for the sick and injured poor of the East End, particularly for those in manufacture and seamen and their families. The Lock Hospital opened in 1747 by William Bloomfield for the treatment of venereal diseases. Middlesex Infirmary founded in 1785 on Windmill Street, for sick and lame and cancer patients. Magdalen Hospital for Penitent Prostitutes founded in 1758. The Magdalen rapidly attracted the attention of the social world of London. The Chapel associated with it became a fashionable resort for the well heeled. On Sundays a congregation flocked there supposedly to hear the sermons but really to gawp at the screened figures of the penitents themselves. Lambeth Lying in Hospital opened in 1767 on Western Bridge Road, Lambeth then on the outskirts of London. It was non-denominational and took single and married women. St Luke’s Hospital for Lunatics founded in 1751 in London, for the treatment of incurable pauper lunatics. The first Chief Physician was Dr William Battie who believed the patients should not be exposed to public view. Medical treatment consisted of cold plunge baths to shake the lunatics out of their insanity. Originally based in a disused foundry in Upper Moorfields, close to Bedlam, built for 25 then enlarged, and by 1771 it was overcrowded. In 1780 the hospital moved to a purpose built building in Old Street, containing 300 single cells, with a small window set high in the wall. There was no heating and the inmates slept on loose straw on wooden bedsteads. Greenwich Hospital opened in 1705 for 52 sailors of the Royal Navy and the Mercantile Marines, who had been wounded in battle. Partitions were contrived to look like ships cabins with bed, table and a chest for clothes. They were well fed and every other year, they received a blue suit, hat, 3 pairs of socks, 2 pairs of shoes, 3 neckties, 3 shirts and 2 nightcaps.

ROTARY CLUB OF HAGLEY

Rotary Club of Hagley No 1328 Godfrey Partridge phf, President and Public Relations Officer District 1060 5 Shelduck Grove, , Worcestershire DY10 4EF Tel: 01562 827 225 E-Mail [email protected]

The Rotary Club of Hagley Monday Evening meetings were suspended In April in line with the requirements and guidelines for assemblies during the pandemic. However, the good work of Rotary International continues and it was welcome news the Africa was declared free of Wild Poliovirus, something Rotarians have been dedicated in eradicating since the 80s. Rotarians of Hagley continued to find opportunities for social contact, despite the suspension of our weekly meetings, though be it through computers, handsets, and the occasional phone call. Our fortnightly “Zoom” meetings have all been well attended. Keeping up with matters local and international is the Rotarians prerogative and is well supported with interest from all quarters. Now conversant with the technology and the discipline of only one speaker at a time, Rotarians have continued to serve as best we can, the interests of Hagley and surrounding areas. Sufficient to say a good time continues to be had by all and the meetings in August held on the 3rd and 18th were enriched with our customary good humor and Rotary camaraderie so we look forward to Zooming the Airways in September on the 10th and 21st and hopefully it won't be long before we'll meet again in person. So if readers would like to have fun with a purpose, consider joining our club who will be meeting at 7.00 pm for 7.30 pm on Monday evenings by visiting our website at

https://hagleyrotary.wixsite.com/website. Should anybody require help or assistance or just a friendly phone call during the period of confinement just phone:

Martin Freckelton on 01562 700 391 or Dave Santus on 01562 886 529 They will be delighted to tell you more about our club

The Parish News October 2020 EXCERPTS FROM A DOG'S DIARY EXCERPTS FROM A CAT'S DIARY

Day number 180 DAY 752 - My captors continue to taunt me with 8:00 am - OH BOY! DOG FOOD! MY FAVORITE! bizarre little dangling objects. They dine lavishly on 9:30 am - OH BOY! A CAR RIDE! MY FAVORITE! fresh meat, while I am forced to eat dry cereal. The 9:40 am - OH BOY! A WALK! MY FAVORITE! only thing that keeps me going is the hope of escape, 10:30 am - OH BOY! A CAR RIDE! MY and the mild satisfaction I get from ruining the FAVORITE! occasional piece of furniture. Tomorrow I may eat 11:30 am - OH BOY! DOG FOOD! MY another house plant. FAVORITE! 12:00 noon - OH BOY! THE KIDS! MY DAY 761 - Today my attempt to kill my captors by FAVORITE! weaving around their feet while they were walking 1:00 pm - OH BOY! THE YARD! MY FAVORITE! almost succeeded. (Must try this at the top of the 4:00 pm - OH BOY! THE KIDS! MY FAVORITE! stairs.) In an attempt to disgust and repulse these vile 5:00 PM - OH BOY! DOG FOOD! MY FAVORITE! oppressors, I once again induced myself to vomit on 5:30 PM - OH BOY! MOM! MY FAVORITE! their favorite chair. (Must try this on their bed.)

Day number 181 DAY 762 - Slept all day so that I could annoy my 8:00 am - OH BOY! DOG FOOD! MY FAVORITE! captors with sleep depriving, incessant pleas for food 9:30 am - OH BOY! A CAR RIDE! MY FAVORITE! at ungodly hours of the night. 9:40 am - OH BOY! A WALK! MY FAVORITE! 10:30 am - OH BOY! A CAR RIDE! MY DAY 765 - Decapitated a mouse and brought them the FAVORITE! headless body, in attempt to make them aware of what 11:30 am - OH BOY! DOG FOOD! MY I am capable of, and to try to strike fear into their FAVORITE! hearts. They only cooed and condescended about 12:00 noon - OH BOY! THE KIDS! MY what a good little cat I was. Hmmm. Not working FAVORITE! according to plan... 1:00 pm - OH BOY! THE YARD! MY FAVORITE! 4:00 pm - OH BOY! THE KIDS! MY FAVORITE! DAY 768 - I am finally aware of how sadistic they are. 5:00 PM - OH BOY! DOG FOOD! MY FAVORITE! For no good reason I was chosen for the water torture. 5:30 PM - OH BOY! MOM! MY FAVORITE! This time however it included a burning foamy chemical called "shampoo." What sick minds could Day number 182 invent such a liquid. My only consolation is the piece of 8:00 am - OH BOY! DOG FOOD! MY FAVORITE! thumb still stuck between my teeth. 9:30 am - OH BOY! A CAR RIDE! MY FAVORITE! 9:40 am - OH BOY! A WALK! MY FAVORITE! DAY 771 - There was some sort of gathering of their 10:30 am - OH BOY! A CAR RIDE! MY accomplices. I was placed in solitary throughout the FAVORITE! event. More importantly I overheard that my 11:30 am - OH BOY! DOG FOOD! MY confinement was due to MY power of "allergies." Must FAVORITE! learn what this is and how to use it to my advantage. 12:00 noon - OH BOY! THE KIDS! MY FAVORITE! DAY 774 - I am convinced the other captives are 1:00 pm - OH BOY! THE YARD! MY FAVORITE! flunkies and maybe snitches. The Dog is routinely 1:30 pm - ooooooo. bath. bummer. released and seems more than happy to return. He is obviously a half-wit. The Bird on the other hand has 4:00 pm - OH BOY! THE KIDS! MY FAVORITE! got to be an informant. He has mastered their frightful 5:00 PM - OH BOY! DOG FOOD! MY FAVORITE! tongue (something akin to mole speak) and speaks 5:30 PM - OH BOY! MOM! MY FAVORITE! with them regularly. I am certain he reports my every move. Due to his current placement in the hanging metal room, his safety is assured. But I can wait, it is only a matter of time. 23

The Parish News October 2020 A challenge for our climate-changing world

While scientists and politicians debate climate change, or indeed, if there is such a thing, you only need to look in your own backyard to see what is happening. It is becoming less predictable and, as some of the experts have warned us, we need to start responding to these changes sooner rather than later.

There have been suggestions that we will need to grow plants that thrive in hot and dry weather and there has been a spate of articles by garden experts about growing such plants in pots on the patio.

About 20 years ago I came across a derelict Bible garden at a Christian conference centre. The garden filled me with disappointment because I thought it was a huge opportunity that was being missed. It was not until 9 years ago, when I married my wife, Sue, that I had an opportunity to start a Bible garden. My first wife had died of breast cancer several years previously. It was a new beginning which meant buying a house together and restoring a garden that had previously been used as a football pitch by the boys who had lived there. Family friends and members of our church were overwhelmingly generous and gave us gifts of garden vouchers to spend on our new garden. It was then I remembered the derelict Bible garden and so we decided to invest the gifts in creating one that we could share with them in the future. Charvil, near Reading, where we live, is you might think the wrong place to grow plants that thrive in the desert, and a few years ago it would have been impossible. Climate change has opened the door a little, but it is still an exciting challenge!

My plan was to only grow plants mentioned directly, or indirectly, in the Bible. While my traditional English crops such as strawberries, raspberries, rhubarb, gooseberries, potatoes etc were becoming less reliable, both in quality and quantity, I have since been overwhelmed with figs and grapes, as the other Bible garden plants have flourished.

I soon discovered that the only books on the subject were written about 50 years ago and are no longer in print — and, of course, our climate has changed considerably since the time the books were written! There are also very few examples of Bible gardens in the UK, I have never seen any others. There are some in the grounds of churches with a limited number of plants, and there is one large Bible garden in Scotland that covers many acres. But please don't be put off by this. If you enjoy a challenge, are prepared to be patient, and accept that some plants will fail, it is not impossible to grow a good number of them. There are more than 100 plants and trees mentioned in the Bible and, to date, I have grown over half of them. They include vegetables, fruit, flowers, herbs, shrubs and trees.

In future issues I plan to write about how anyone can start growing Bible plants, whether it be in a few tubs on the patio, or if you have the room — and a very tolerant family! — to create your own Bible garden.

24

The Parish News October 2020

You may, of course, already be growing some of them in your garden without realising it, so the first thing to do is to draw up a list of the plants that qualify and create your own wish list. I will be happy to send you the list of the plants I have grown so far.

Next month I will be looking at planning a Bible garden. As well as the plants, there are other elements such as rocks, stones, water, lights and statues, that add considerably to the overall picture. The plants and elements provide a constant reminder of the beauty of God’s creation and the powerful message of God’s love for us that is revealed through the pages of the Bible. Lynn McIntyre shares her thoughts on a new Bible reading tool

A very useful ‘Bible app’

I’ve discovered a very helpful Christian ‘app’, which you may be interested in downloading. It’s free and has some excellent features. Called the ‘Bible app’ it was created by ‘YouVersion’.

There is a section where all the books of the Bible are listed with the option of clicking on individual chapters. Both reading and/or listening to the text is possible. A wide range of Bible versions is offered, including: New Living Translation, King James Version, and Good News. This sometimes helps me see a passage from a different angle and can help my understanding of it.

A video review of each book is also available. A section of text can be highlighted (different colours available). Scripture can be sent to a personal prayer list and you can also copy, share, add a note, bookmark or get a different translation on a particular piece of text etc. These highlighted, bookmarked extracts of scripture can then be accessed in a separate section.

The app has a video sub-section with a variety of videos such as ‘How to read the Bible’, ‘Wisdom’, ‘The Torah’, ‘The New Testament’ and so on. Selected Psalms have been put to music and are relaxing to listen to.

Within the search section of the app you can look up a particular word such as love, anger, wisdom, Holy Spirit etc and relevant scriptures in the Bible are listed. This is a very useful tool which I only discovered when asked to write this article. Often in the past I have wanted to easily access applicable scriptures for a particular word and this makes it easy.

Other excellent features include plans, images and Christian events that you may also find useful. Hopefully, this summary has given you a taste of what the ‘app’ offers, and I encourage you to download it and benefit from it.

The Parish News October 2020 FUNNIES

Upgrade anyone? The young woman who submitted the tech support message below (about her relationship to her husband) presumably did it as a joke. Then she got a reply that was way too good to keep to herself. The tech support people's love advice was hilarious and genius!

The query: Dear Tech Support, Last year I upgraded from Boyfriend 5.0 to Husband 1.0 and noticed a distinct slowdown in overall system performance, particularly in the flower and jewelry applications, which operated flawlessly under Boyfriend 5.0. In addition, Husband 1.0 uninstalled many other valuable programs, such as Romance 9.5 and Personal Attention 6.5, and then installed undesirable programs such as: AFL 5.0, NRL 3.0 and Golf Clubs 4.1. Conversation 8.0 no longer runs, and House cleaning 2.6 simply crashes the system. Please note that I have tried running Nagging 5.3 to fix these problems, but to no avail. What can I do? Signed, Desperate

The response (that came weeks later out of the blue): Dear Desperate, First keep in mind, Boyfriend 5.0 is an entertainment package, while Husband 1.0 is an operating system. Please enter command: I thought you loved me.html and try to download Tears 6.2. Do not forget to install the Guilt 3.0 update. If that application works as designed, Husband 1.0 should then automatically run the applications Jewellery 2.0 and Flowers 3.5. However, remember, overuse of the above application can cause Husband 1.0 to default to Grumpy Silence 2.5, Happy Hour 7.0, or Beer 6.1. Please note that Beer 6.1 is a very bad program that will download the Wind Breaking and Snoring Loudly Beta version. Whatever you do, DO NOT, under any circumstances, install Mother-In-Law 1.0 as it runs a virus in the background that will eventually seize control of all your system resources. In addition, please do not attempt to re-install the Boyfriend 5.0 program. These are unsupported applications and will crash Husband 1.0. In summary, Husband 1.0 is a great program, but it does have limited memory and cannot learn new applications quickly. You might consider buying additional software to improve memory and performance. We recommend Cooking 3.0. Good Luck! Webmaster MIPC.
