BULGARIA IN BRIEF 5 6 BULGARIA IN BRIEF WELCOME SPRING WITH A DAY HIKE IN VITOSHA So – you’re in Sofia and it’s the beginning of spring. You happen to also like nature, mountains and hiking? Congratulations – you’re here at the right time! The glorious snows of Vitosha are melting and the river waters are higher than ever. The hiking routes are not only beautiful, but easily accessible and not too difficult as well. One of our favorites is the route to Boyana Waterfall. Why the Boyana Waterfall? The Boyana Waterfall is the largest waterfall in Vitosha, splashing down from 15m and it’s most rampant in spring. Besides that, the hiking route is not too far from the city center – you can reach the starting point by public transport for just about 30-50 minutes. The route is difficult enough to challenge you and easy enough to have a fun day-trip with friends and family. When you reach the higher parts of the path, you will have the chance to enjoy some panoramic views of Sofia. How to get there? The beginning of the hiking route is located in Boyana district, very close to the Boyana Church. Make sure to check out the Boyana Church too! It’s part of the UNESCO World Heritage List and is one of the most remarkable monuments in Bulgaria for its frescoes, which are thought of as forerunners of European Renaissance. BULGARIA IN BRIEF 7 To reach it by public transport, you have two options: 1) Take the metro to Vitosha station and from there bus No. 64 to station ‘Boyansko hanche’ or 2) With tram No. 5 from right behind the Palace of Justice (Serdika Metrostation) reach ‘Ovcha kupel blvd.’ station and then take bus No. 107 to station ‘Boyana Church’. From there you walk uphill for about 5 minutes on Pop Evstati Vitoshki Street and you reach the forest where you will find yellow signs for the waterfall and painted marks on the trees – white, green, white – guiding you all through your journey. Watch out! There’s another route that goes right by the flowing Boyana river – but it can come a bit difficult if you don’t have previous experience with hiking – therefore, take the left turn for the easier route. The route is about 6 km long with 600 m denivelation – the Boyana waterfall is about 1300 m above sea level. It will take you about 2-3 hours uphill and about an hour and a half down (following the same route). It’s said to be of intermediate hiking difficulty. Overall, it’s broad and slant most of the time, so there’s nothing to worry about. Some useful tips! It would be best to start your journey in the morning, so you have enough time to walk around and visit the Boyana Church and the Boyana Lake as well. Don’t miss Suhi Vrah – it has a beautiful panoramic view of Sofia! You’ll see it on your right after about an hour of climbing. Be careful for the more slippery parts as you get closer to the river – it would be best to wear your hiking shoes or boots. Don’t forget your raincoat and something warm to wear on top too! The higher parts of the forest could get a bit cool. And of course, bring water and some snacks or sandwiches in your backpack! And most importantly – have fun! :) More information about how to spend your time in Sofia on www.visitsofia.bg www.facebook.com/InformationCentreSofia 8 OVERVIEW Sofia’s Symbols National Assembly The University of Sofia (map E3) St. Kliment Ohridski The building of the National Assembly (map E4) (Parliament of the Republic of Bulgaria) is located on the square of the same name, situated on In front of the entrance to the oldest and largest Tsar Osvoboditel Blvd. Parliament is the state high school in Bulgaria is standing the bronze body of the legislature power in the country. ONOMÀSTICA 5 (2019): 65–89 | RECEPCIÓ 28.10.2019 | ACCEPTACIÓ 28.11.2019 River names as a testament of cultural heritage (on hydronyms in the Iskar river basin) Anna Choleva-Dimitrova Department of Onomastics Institute for Bulgarian Language, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences [email protected] Abstract: River names are some of the oldest -onyms on record. The article examines 170 river names from the basin of the Iskar river – the largest tributary of the Danube in Bulgaria. The origin and significance of river names emerge through the application of traditional onomastic methods – onomastic (etymological) analysis and onomastic reconstruction. Comparative onomastic data from adjacent and more distant regions in Bulgaria and the Balkans are also drawn on. Conclusions about the relative antiquity of the hydronyms are drawn. Paraules clau: nom de riu, hidrònim, riu Iskar, riu Danubi, afluent d’un riu 1 Introduction Hydronymy is one of the most important branches of onomastics.

  • Ic-92 Seismic Estimation for Sofia Region with Neural
Joint International Conference on Computing and Decision Making in Civil and Building Engineering June 14-16, 2006 - Montréal, Canada SEISMIC ESTIMATION FOR SOFIA REGION WITH NEURAL MODELING Svetla Radeva1, Raimar J. Scherer2, Ivanka Paskaleva3 and Dimitar Radev4 ABSTRACT A study of the site effects and the microzonation of Sofia region, based on the modeling of seismic ground motion along three cross sections were carried out. Realistic synthetic strong motion waveforms have been computed for an earthquake scenario applying a hybrid modeling method, based on the modal summation technique, finite differences scheme and neural modeling. Realistic synthetic seismic signals have been generated for all sites of interest. Two groups of experiments have been performed, where in first group the ground motion is modeled for one-dimensional layered anelastic media, applying an algorithm based on the modal summation method. In second group of experiments the ground motion is modeled for two-dimensional laterally heterogeneous media and with implementation of neural network, learned and trained with real earthquake seismic records. The aim of suggested deterministic modeling is to provide site response estimates at Sofia due to the chosen earthquake scenarios and to show how to use the database of synthetic seismic signals, seismological and seismic engineering parameters. Modeling of site response for selected area on different distances from possible epicenter with synthetic time histories and neural networks will help to include developed models in structural control of important and high-risk structures. KEY WORDS earthquake engineering, stochastic modeling, seismic waves, neural networks. INTRODUCTION One of the very promising methods in earthquake engineering is application of structural control.

  • Sofia Retail Guide
SOFIA Cushman & Wakefield Global Cities Retail Guide Cushman & Wakefield | Sofia | 2019 0 Sofia is the capital of Bulgaria and the largest city with 1.32 million inhabitants (20% of the national population). The city occupies a leading position in terms of investments, economic and infrastructure development, education and quality of life countrywide. Sofia is the largest regional economy, accounting for almost 40% of the national GDP. The city is home of 23 universities and more than 15 independent IT schools. It is the largest economic hub that offers a highly-skilled work force. The Bulgarian capital enjoys a constantly growing population, thanks to the migration of young people to the city. This results in favourable labour market with easy access to labour force, the highest employment rate in Bulgaria (75% for 2017) and gross average salary (€ 8,793 in 2017) exceeding by more than 30% the country average. Sofia is also one of the most visited tourist destinations in Bulgaria along with coastal and mountain resorts. The popularity of the city for tourism is underpinned by the increasing number of flights and passengers on Sofia Airport (7% y-o-y growth in 2018). The first shopping centres in Sofia appeared in 2006 and shortly afterwards several schemes followed. Currently, nine shopping centres and one outlet centre operate in the city, with total space amounting to around 405,000 sqm. The largest schemes have huge entertainment, sport or conference zones in addition to their retail mixes. With Food & Beverage (F&B) becoming an essential part of the customer experience, various types of restaurants, cafés and SOFIA food kiosks are also widely represented.
