This directory’s cover was designed by Nova Stanley, a student at the High School of Art and Design. Nova’s design expresses the new independence and relationships that students build as they transition into high school. These students look out into the city, imagining their next four years of growth and discovery. They are all supporting each other while recognizing their differences and the different paths they will take. For more information, including how to enter next year’s competition, ask your art teacher or visit schools.nyc.gov/CoverDesign. • Messages of American Popular Song to Women During World War II
“I’m Doin’ It for Defense”: Messages of American Popular Song to Women during World War II A thesis submitted to the Graduate School of the University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of MASTER OF MUSIC in the Division of Composition, Musicology, and Theory of the College-Conservatory of Music 2013 by Amy Brooks BM, Bob Jones University, 2008 Committee Chair: bruce d. mcclung, PhD Abstract World War II presented many new opportunities for American women. In this time of need, they were called upon to take an active part in the war effort, whether by means of working in a factory, growing a victory garden, or serving as a volunteer for wartime organizations. Women made great strides forward in areas such as the workforce and the military. The American popular song industry promoted these new roles for women. I have compiled over 150 songs from 1940 to1945 that relate to women’s roles during the World War II era. Of these songs, I have chosen a select number of songs that best demonstrate popular culture’s attitudes and actions towards women during the war. These songs can be divided into five categories: women in the military, women in the workforce, women’s war effort, women’s responsibilities to men in uniform, and women in the immediate post-war period. I have studied the representative songs by considering their lyrics to identify the objectives supported by the popular song industry. I took into consideration the venues in which they were presented and how these performances influenced their reception.

  • A Discussion on the Duluth Curriculum with Ellen and Luis
A Discussion on the Duluth Curriculum Power & Control: Tactics of Men Who Batter Domestic Abuse Intervention Programs, 202 East Superior Street, Duluth, MN 55802 www.theduluthmodel.org rior Street, Duluth, MN 55802 www.theduluthmodel.org 2 Forward by Ellen Pence I have been asked to address the criticism of the Duluth Model. Many of the criticisms are about our men’s groups; whether they are too confrontational, whether they are too western or white, whether they are too naive about violent men. I had the privilege of working with Luis Aravena for six months when he came to Duluth to translate our materials for his Spanish-speaking group in Toronto. This interview is gathered from two long talks we had while he was working in Duluth. Two friends edited the conversation so that most of our “ums” and “ahs” and some of our babbling were left out. I would rather let this interview speak for the Duluth men’s groups than for me to try and respond to a series of critiques. It’s based on Freire’s idea of using codes, isn’t it? Ellen: Yes, Freire had this idea that if people who had been taught to lead their lives in uncritical or unreflective ways are to begin to think critically and reflectively, then the educational process must start in the real moments of their lives, not in the abstract.

Table of Contents Title Page Copyright Page Introduction ACT I ACT II Furniture and Property List Lighting Plot Effects Plot FOR THE BEST IN PAPERBACKS, LOOK FOR THE TWELVE ANGRY MEN REGINALD ROSE (1920-2002) was born and grew up in New York City. After Pearl Harbor he enlisted, and served in the Philippines and Japan as a First Lieutenant until 1946. Writing since he was a teenager, he sold the first of his many television plays, The Bus to Nowhere, in 1950. He was called for jury duty for the first time in 1954. It was a manslaughter case and the jury argued bitterly for eight hours before bringing in a unanimous verdict. He decided this was a powerful situation on which to base a television play, and wrote Twelve Angry Men as a live one-hour drama for CBS’s Studio One. Its impact led to the film version in 1957, and he received Oscar nominations for Best Screenplay and Best Picture (as coproducer). The stage version was first produced in 1964, and revised versions in 1996 and 2004. In 1997 it was filmed for Showtime. Other TV plays include The Remarkable Incident at Carson Corners, Thunder on Sycamore Street, The Cruel Day, A Quiet Game of Cards, The Sacco-Vanzetti Story, Black Monday, Dear Friends, Studs Lonigan, The Rules of Marriage, and the award-winning Escape from Sobibor. Rose created, supervised, and wrote many of the episodes of the TV series The Defenders (1961-1965). His films include Crime in the Streets, Dino, Man of the West, The Man in the Net, Baxter!, Somebody Killed Her Husband, The Wild Geese, The Sea Wolves, and the film version of Whose Life Is It Anyway? He published Six Television Plays; The Thomas Book, written for children; and a memoir, Undelivered Mail.

  • Reclaiming Critical Analysis: the Social Harms of “Bitch”
Reclaiming Critical Analysis: The Social Harms of “Bitch” BY SHERRYL KLEINMAN, MATTHEW B. EZZELL, AND A. COREY FROST Abstract The increasing use of “bitch” among women makes it harder to see links between the word and patriarchy. In pop culture and in everyday life, men and women use “bitch” as an epithet against women (and non-conventional men) as well as a means of expressing dominance over a person or object. Women who “reclaim” the term—by declaring themselves “bitches,” calling other women “bitches” in a friendly way, or using the term as a female-based generic—unwittingly reinforce sexism. Unlike the term “feminist,” which is tied to a movement for social change, “bitch” provides women only with false power, challenging neither men nor patriarchy. E USED TO BELIEVE that feminists found the term “bitch” unacceptable. Years ago, when one of us analyzed terms that make women invisible and men the norm—“freshman,” “chairman,” and “you guys”—she wrote, perhaps naively: “I’m not referring [in the case of sexist language] to such words as ‘bitch,’ ‘whore,’ and ‘slut.’ What I focus on instead are words that students Wconsider just fine: male (so-called) generics” (Kleinman 2000: 6). Unlike “you guys,” “bitch” is a slur; and there’s no doubt that the word has a female referent, and a non- human one at that.1 Feminists knew that women could act in mean-spirited ways, but we also knew that using “bitch” to describe them reinforced sexism. If women liked the feel of 1 We will focus on “bitch” in this paper, and make only passing references to “sluts” and “hos.” Some of our analysis could be applied to these terms as well.

Semesteroppgave i PSY2500: Kommunikasjon, språk og sosiale relasjoner Innleveringsfrist 28.11.2014 kl. 1400. Kandidatnummer 284. Formell oppgavetekst: ”Språket som speil for endringer i samfunnet over tid”. Eminem and women: How the female sex is portrayed in Eminem’s rap texts, and how his representation of the female sex has change during his career. 1.0 Introduction Eminem has been criticized for his condescending view of the female sex. Search on the internet on “Eminem and women” gives a lot of hits with explicit criticism of Eminem’s attitude towards women. More, Hjelen (2008, p. 41) writes that many rappers, included Eminem, have been named as “women haters”, and that rap music represents misogyny. Male rap artists are also more likely than female artists to use profanity in their lyrics (Monk-Turner & Sylvertooth 2008). In regard, it is expected to find a lot of examples or empiric of how the female sex is portrayed in Eminem’s texts. Thereby, an important issue in this paper is to see if and how his attitude towards women has changed from his first record to his last record. This span from the album “Infinity” released in 1996 until “Marshall Matters LP 2” released in 2013. However, since “The Slim Shady LP”, released in 1998, is seen as his first international success, this album will represent the starting point of my analysis. Based on the general development and focus on women’s liberation in today’s society, and a massive critic against Eminem’s lyrics, it is interesting to see if we can find some changes in his representation of the female sex during his career.
