Oder wie wertvoll sind Stimmen? Mit beiden Fragen lässt sich trefflich auf das musikali- sche Großereignis des Jazz Fest Wien hinweisen, dass seit über zwei Jahrzehnten traditionell im Sommer aus Wien einen internationalen Treffpunkt der Stars und Musikfans macht. Das Jazz Fest Wien, bei dem die Grenzen zwischen Jazz, Blues, Soul, Pop und Worldmusic erfreulicherweise immer schon recht durchlässig waren, präsentiert heuer ein Programm, das dieses Mal besonders mit Altbewährtem triumphiert. Si- cherlich nicht die schlechteste Wahl in stürmischen Zeiten ist folglich, dass der Stimme, diesem jeden Menschen ei- genen und deshalb so vertrauten und bewährtem Organ, großer Raum zugestanden wird und mehr Sängerinnen und Sänger als je zuvor den Ton beim Jazz Fest Wien angeben. So wird das Eröffnungskonzert in der Wiener Staatsoper am 1. Juli Eric Burdon bestreiten. 1955 saß der Brite bereits mit Louis Armstrong in einer Garderobe, er sang sich mit einer Version von „House of the rising sun“ in den sechziger Jahren in die Hitparaden, erklärte mit der Gruppe War der Ungerechtigkeit der Welt den Krieg und sang mit Jimi Hen- drix und Jimmy Witherspoon. Momentan ist sein Uralt-Hit „Don’t let me be misunderstood“ im Hintergrund von Beck- hams Unterhosen-Kampagne zu hören, und er selbst, wie neuere Konzertberichte belegen, ist immer noch ein tobender und rau singender Bühnenderwisch, der den R&B mit britischer Herzlichkeit in die Wiener Staatsoper bringt. This model was expanded upon by musicians in England and Germany during the late-1970s who developed the popular music style called Industrial as a fusion of experimental popular music sounds, performance art theatricality, and avant-garde composition. -

During the 1980s three revolutions took hold of popular music: the emergence of disc-jockeys as a creative force (in particular in techno music), the advent of hip-hop (and therefore of the "rapper"), and the marriage of industrial music, heavy metal and hardcore (generically associated with the "cyber-punk" culture). The idea of rapping was imported into New York by the Jamaican immigrants, who were already familiar with "toasting" (a reggae artist talking in rhyme over the instrumental sections of a record). Some of them became disc-jockeys ("dj") that traveled around New York carrying their "sound system" to perform at block parties. In 1975 in the Bronx of New York, one of them, Clive "Hercules" Campbell, or "Kool Herc", started making music with two turntables out of breakbeats (the instrumental breaks of a song that focused on the rhythm section, the favorite part of the song for most dancers), while another young black man of the Bronx, Theodore "Grand Wizard" Livingstone was accidentally discovering the "skratching" sound of a turntable. -

This 256-page issue is mainly written by recent Hopwood winners, but it begins with three related items: The Hopwood Lecture for 2006 by Charles Baxter, “Losers”; a newspaper profile and chat with Avery Hopwood from 1920; and a long interview with Arthur Miller during his last visit to the University of Michigan in the fall of 2004.
