to the September issue of Cruise Ports & Destinations. Even in the short hello and welcome space of time since our last issue, the world of cruising has seen all sorts of change, some good, some less so. The Gulf, for example, is making a massive comeback, with more and more lines basing ships there for winter, Thomson being the latest to announce a season of winter sun voyages for 2016/17. Cuba is still on a roll; in fact, if clients want to go there, a cruise may be the only way, as hotels are so full, which is good news for the cruise lines. Our thoughts are with Istanbul, which has lost some of its overnight cruise business due to political instability and, of course, with those in places like Tunisia whose livelihoods depend on . The Mediterranean is certainly a different place nowadays. In this issue, we travel further afield, with a detailed update on what's new in the Caribbean for the coming season. We explore the Mekong river and the coast of Vietnam, and take a look at the rarefied world of cultural cruising and how best to sell it. We hope this issue inspires you and your clients and we welcome your feedback. Just email me any comments at the address below. Enjoy the magazine!

Celestyal extends operation

Celestyal Cruises is extending its homeporting operation in Turkey for another two years and deploying a newly chartered ship from February 2016. The 1,074-passenger Celestyal Nefeli will be delivered to Celestyal in February and refurbished before the 2016 cruise season. Celestyal Nefeli will replace Celestyal Odyssey, the charter agreement of which will be concluded at the end of October, and will embark passengers in Istanbul, Izmir and Kusadasi, as well as Greek ports. Celestyal Nefeli, like its predecessor, is small enough to dock in lesser- known harbours throughout the Eastern Mediterranean, a key part of the cruise operator's 'immersion' strategy. Since 2014, Celestyal has added 15 new destinations that include Milos, Ios, Kos, Samos, Symi, Chios, Cesme and Syros, all of them off the beaten track for cruising.

Amazing AndalucÍa Spain’s sun-drenched southern coast is packed with natural beauty and cultural interest, offering superb facilities for cruise passengers

xploring Andalucia by sea is pure pleasure. The coastline, incorporating both the Mediterranean and the Atlantic, extends over 1,000km. With 16 commercial ports and two river ports, cruise lines from all over the world visit Andalucia, taking advantage of modern facilities, a rich cultural and artistic Eheritage, the exceptional climate and astonishing natural beauty. Andalucia is rich in maritime tradition and it’s not difficult to imagine a valiant Columbus setting out from here to discover new worlds, or the pirate Barbarossa attacking the coast around Cadiz. The main commercial ports are Huelva, Seville and Cádiz on the Atlantic coast, and busy Algeciras, Málaga, Motril and Almería on the Mediterranean. All of them are important international holiday destinations with a well- developed infrastructure for cruise tourism.

Huelva

Huelva was originally a Roman colony, later occupied by the Moors. A vast statue of Christopher Columbus marks his famous voyage, which commenced in the nearby village of Palos de la Frontera. Huelva is conveniently located for the virgin beaches of the Doñana National Park, the wooded hills of the Sierra de Aracena and Picos de Aroche Natural Parks and the spectacular Caves of Maravillas. What’s more, the region is known for its wines and the famous Jamón Ibérico ham. Puertohuelva.com

Cádiz

The Puerto de la Bahía de Cádiz occupies a strategic position guarding the Straits of Gibraltar; it’s often featured on itineraries either as part of an Iberia cruise or as a stop on transatlantic voyages. Cádiz itself is a wonderfully atmospheric old sea port with cobbled streets, pretty squares and a magnificent cathedral. Seville and Jerez are both within easy reach. Puertocadiz.com

The Port of Almería lies at the sun- drenched eastern end of Andalucia and is a popular port of call for cruises sailing the western Mediterranean from Gibraltar, Palma de Mallorca or Valencia. Historic Almería, which still today has a Moorish feel, with its whitewashed houses, offers sandy beaches, Arabic castles and a unique fortified cathedral.
